The Washington Capitals were unable to put a stranglehold on their opening round series against the Florida Panthers.
The Capitals likely will need to strike first and play a more solid defensive game than they did Monday, as while the goaltending was better than expected at home, they still need to try and slow the Panthers down. When the series shifts to Florida on Wednesday, they will need Samsonov to turn in another strong contest as the presumable starter for Washington for perhaps the rest of the series. The Washington Capitals weren’t at their best in Game 4 on Monday night with a chance to take a 3-1 series lead over the Florida Panthers, but they still nearly were able to grab a win. The Capitals also allowed 32 shots, only bettered by Florida’s total of 36 in Game 2, largely thanks to a 17-shot third-period in that contest. The Capitals were finally able to break through and take the lead with 10:29 left in regulation, as Evgeny Kuznetsov continued his strong playoff with his second goal in four games, both coming in key situations in the third period. Washington wasn’t quite as crisp as they had been in their Game 1 and Game 3 wins only generating 16 shots in nearly 65 minutes of hockey and allowing 32 shots on net in the 3-2 loss.

“I thought in the third period we got moving in the right direction and pressed and we got to where we wanted, but there’s not a lot of room out there five-on-five.” It’s that effort, Oshie said last week, that has led to the unit’s recent success. T.J. Oshie has flourished in that role with the first unit, with two of his three goals in this series — including the first score Monday — coming from that net-front position. Washington’s power play was streaky in the regular season and ultimately finished 23rd at 18.8 percent. I get the system they’re playing right now isn’t exactly conducive to a ton of offense but Bobrovsky has clear holes in this series and you cant find those without shooting the puck. The penalty kill is still shutting Florida out as they went 4-for-4 on kills in this game. The Panthers really have been the second-best team but they got the bounces in this one to force at least two more games.

Credit to the Capitals for their efforts, but this series shouldn’t be as close as it is when stacking up the rosters head-to-head. The problem is, they’re 0-for-13 on the power play in this series after going 0-for-4 in Game 4. As we learned in the regular season, they spent about 71.8 per cent of their power play time in the offensive zone after the deadline, up from 68.6 per cent before. His transitional abilities were a strength throughout the regular season, as he led the team in scoring chances off the rush. In fact, the Presidents' Trophy winning Panthers were just one goal away from being pushed to the brink of elimination against a team with an aging core and unstable goaltending. The Panthers’ offensive attack has significantly dipped this series — and the Capitals deserve credit for upping their defensive efforts to contain such a high octane team.

Words can not express just how massive this is for the Caps if he can keep this up. Some are calling for Oshie to be suspended for the hit to Sam Bennetts head. The hit was looked a tad high through the neck area but it didn't look intentional to the head at all. TJ Oshie crushed Bennett with a huge hit and that sprung the Caps open in the opposite direction. Here is the hit in slow mo and a poll: Sergei Bobrovsky - Bob had a really nice bounce back game for the Panthers. The Caps didn't generate much last night but of their 16 shots, 8 of them were considered high danger chances. Florida was trying anything and everything last night on the power play to no avail. The Caps struggled to get the puck into the zone and sustain long periods of possession time and quality shots when they had the extra man. The Penalty Kill - The PK did its job again and shut out the Florida Panthers. The Panthers are now 0/13 in the series on the power play. Neither team was able to score on the power play in the second period and I thought for the Caps particularly, they really struggled this period with the extra man. If you were to play out that exact scenario again last night when Florida pulled Bob, the Caps probably win that game and that scenario 9/10 times. The Washington Capitals lost to the Florida Panthers by a score of 3-2 (OT). The Capitals were NOT the better team last night yet still found themselves up 2-1 late in the third period.
