FOX announces impressive post-retirement gig for Tom Brady (Musket Fire)

FOX Sports confirmed on an earnings call that New England Patriots legend Tom Brady has a spot as an NFL analyst lined up for him whenever he retires.

It would feel weird to see Brady selling NFTs and remaining disconnected from the sport he loves. Given the ratings success Romo has been, grabbing star quarterbacks out of retirement might be the formula moving forward. Even though he is coming back to the league for one more year, retirement can’t be too far around the corner.

Brady has plenty of interests outside of the game, but it's not easy to replace its role in his life. No one knows when that time will come, of course, as the man who has defied all previously established longevity logic only gave us a preview of what the world might be like once he's no longer on an active roster. Brady has determined his next pursuit following the conclusion of his NFL career: broadcasting football.

Tom Brady Joining Fox Sports: Winners, Fallout, Analysis (Sports Illustrated)

Fox announced this morning that Tom Brady will become its lead NFL analyst once he actually retires from playing. The beauty of this column being called Traina ...

- For months, I have said over and over on the SI Media Podcast that it made no sense at all that Fox would let Buck and Aikman leave after they were with Fox for so long and were thought of by many people as the best booth in the game. It worked in a major way for Tony Romo and CBS. It was a disaster for ESPN and Jason Witten. It was rough for Drew Brees and NBC. But personally, I don’t see how Brady isn’t anything but a smash success in this role. Fox said in its statement today that not only will Brady call games for the network, but he will be “an ambassador for Fox.” My point in taking the victory lap? I just don’t see Brady failing in the role. - The other huge winner is Kevin Burkhardt. Just a few months ago, Burkhardt was Fox’s No. 2 play-by-play caller. What may be even more important for Fox is that it will have someone who is a celebrity just as much as he is a football player on the broadcasts. Was Fox mad that Aikman’s representatives were in negotiations with Amazon? No one would ever admit that, but it sure sounds that way. I’ll be professional and save my victory lap for the end. - The biggest winner here, obviously, is Fox. It will have the greatest quarterback of all time calling its games. Brady’s Fox salary hasn’t been leaked yet (I’m sure Andrew Marchand will have it sooner rather than later), but you can be assured it’s massive. His appearance this past season on the ManningCast was excellent.

The long-term agreement has Tom Brady calling games with play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt and serving as an ambassador for Fox Sports.

A lightly regarded prospect coming out of college, Brady was the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft but made the most of his chance when it finally came and in doing so turned around the fortunes of the New England Patriots franchise. The 44-year-old Brady said in a Tweet he was “excited” about joining Fox but that there was “a lot of unfinished business on the field with the Buccaneers”. Terms of the deal were not disclosed and Fox Sports did not immediately reply when asked to confirm a New York Post report that Brady agreed to a 10-year contract worth $375-million.

Brady nearly rallied Tampa Bay to victory in last season's divisional-round playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, helping the Buccaneers overcome a 27-3 second-half deficit before Rams kicker Matt Gay booted a 30-yard field goal as time expired to win 30-27. Tom Brady Can Be a Great Broadcaster, but Only If He's Honest (Sports Illustrated)

The legendary quarterback has an unmatched amount of NFL experience, but here's hoping he'll be more honest than most ex-players who jump to announcing.

What would make Brady truly worth the hype and the adulation as a broadcaster is if he’s willing to do what he did as a player and avoid the pressure to conform. The football television wars have taught us there is a stark difference between what companies think we want and what we actually desire. What makes Brady interesting as a player are all the flash-point moments in NFL history he has been attached to and how they color his rise to league monolith. His foray into documentary filmmaking was an effort to tell his story on his terms, which often paints Brady in the familiar fairy-tale protagonist role that we’ve been fed since his humble beginnings as a sixth-round draft pick. The one who has been creeping out in moments of humility since his departure from New England. Admitting the tuck rule may have been a fumble. If you’re bored, go back and listen to a game from any point over the last 10 years featuring a team with controversy surrounding it (search for “Antonio Brown” here). Or even a team marred by a recent losing streak.

While Brady won't be the star of the show during broadcasts, you can bet he has an opinion that fans will want to listen to. Tom Brady's absurd contract details with FOX Sports revealed (Musket Fire)

New England Patriots legend Tom Brady is making an absurd amount of money with FOX Sports for his post-career broadcasting gig.

Tony Romo and Troy Aikman’s “massive” deals with CBS and ESPN have now been lapped; combined, the two men still make less annually than Brady will whenever he joins the workforce. After years of taking discounts with the Patriots so Bill Belichick could improve the roster elsewhere, clearly Brady no longer cares about the potential effects on FOX’s payroll if he absorbs most of it with a megalith deal. TB12 has accepted a job as FOX’s lead NFL analyst alongside their top game-caller Kevin Burkhardt. And he’s apparently so interested in the position that he’s chosen to work for free!

Brady took it a step further by allowing Brown to live with him like he was a wayward child instead of a serial predator. Over the last 20 years, he’s left a mist of scandals in his wake that have made him one of the more polarizing figures in sports. In Brady’s new role at Fox, he’ll automatically be the face of their NFL coverage. Brady’s career has been a real-life Picture of Dorian Gray. Brady’s moldy personality masks the toxic path he’s taken to reach these heights in his career. For all that cash, he could be a bigger bust than Jason Witten or NewsCorp’s gamble on The Magic Hour. Whenever Brady retires, whether it’s in this decade or the next, nothing will justify this lead balloon of a contract. It’s also the reasoning behind the NFL giving Monday and Sunday Night Football the option to flex games into the primetime slot during the second half of the season.
