The World Health Organization says it is now aware of 348 cases of the unexplained hepatitis in kids around the world, with one death reported and 17 liver transplants required so far in response. “The challenge with this breakout of new cases is that the typical hepatitis viruses are not being found in these children,” pediatrician Dr. Dina Kulik told CP24. Public Health Ontario defines the cases as transaminitis, or liver inflammation, alongside jaundice and gastrointestinal dysfunction in children up to age 16, with no presence of the known Hepatitis viruses A through E.

Tam said cases that emerge in Canada are called “probable” because there’s no confirmation on the specific cause. There’s always been hepatitis and some severe cases of hepatitis in children pre-pandemic and one would expect post-pandemic as well,” she said. She says experts in the United Kingdom and the United States have found cases involving adenovirus type 41 “but that may or may not be the cause or the only factor leading to hepatitis in children.” “We’re still at the investigation stage of trying to figure out whether any of these cases are indeed linked at all. “It remains to be seen whether this number represents an increase in cases of unknown origin compared to similar time periods in previous years or if any of these cases will be confirmed to be caused by a novel clinical entity,” the hospital said in an emailed statement. Even before the pandemic, about half of all pediatric hepatitis cases that are severe would have no known cause, Tam added.

That being said, there are millions and millions of children around the world. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. There has been some association worldwide with adenovirus, which is a fairly common virus. The PHAC has not confirmed if there is an increase in the number of cases of acute hepatitis in Canada, but says they are “prepared to carefully and thoroughly investigate any cases reported that meet the national case definition.” “So we have seen over 200 cases of severe acute hepatitis around the world. “So we don't know what the cause is.

SickKids has identified seven cases of children with severe acute hepatitis of unknown origin between Oct. 1, 2021, and April 30, 2022.

“So that is something that we are carefully trying to get across and evaluate, so that we get a clear understanding of whether adenovirus happens to be an innocent bystander who just woke up, or if it is the culprit.” Some cases have required transfer to specialist children’s liver units and, as of April 8, six children had undergone liver transplantation, according to the WHO. The U.S. has reported five deaths, and India three. On Tuesday, Philippa Easterbrook, a senior scientist with the WHO’s Global Hepatitis Programme, said there are now 348 probable cases globally, with 70 additional cases pending confirmation. On Tuesday, the agency said it is not yet known if there has been an increase of such cases. The Public Health Agency of Canada, through the Canadian National Public Health Intelligence platform, on April 14 alerted provinces and territories to increase vigilance of acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children. SickKids has identified seven cases of children with severe acute hepatitis of unknown origin, meeting the WHO’s probable case definition, between Oct. 1, 2021, and April 30, 2022.

But I don’t want people to be lining up in (emergency) because the kid started vomiting once or something,” said Allen. There’s always been hepatitis and some severe cases of hepatitis in children pre-pandemic and one would expect post-pandemic as well,” she said. “The adenoviruses belong to a family of viruses that can persist in our bodies in certain cells for long period of time. Ottawa pediatric health centre CHEO said Tuesday it had no suspected cases of acute pediatric hepatitis admitted to hospital. But we’re not yet able to say definitively that these cases truly represent a new signal,” he said.

There’s always been hepatitis and some severe cases of hepatitis in children pre-pandemic and one would expect post-pandemic as well,” she said. Toronto’s SickKids Hospital reported seven probable cases of severe acute hepatitis on Tuesday, all of “unknown origin,” in children between one month and 16 years of age. Hepatitis impacts the liver and can be detected by the onset of jaundice (yellow eyes), dark urine and/or pale stool. She noted that before the pandemic, about half of severe hepatitis cases among children had no known cause. Over 70 per cent of the U.K.’s cases tested positive for adenovirus. The U.K. currently leads in cases with around 163, and only six countries are reporting more than five cases.
