Flames finally flex offensive chops with sustained pressure in Game ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Punctuated by The Shift, the Calgary Flames generated sustained offensive zone pressure for this first time this series and were rewarded for their effort.

Otter was outstanding and so that’s why it was 1-0 going into the third and we had some looks to make it 1-1 and then they got the penalty shot.” We didn’t take too many penalties and we got to play 5-on-5 and that’s where we are a really good team.” We had around 50 shots on net and a lot of long shifts in their zone. “Last game had a breakaway with two minutes left and wanted that one back. It was nice to find the net there and give us a two-goal lead.” “I felt like he had my number there tonight. “The momentum is we’re going home and playing in front of our fans.” Soon thereafter he set up Elias Lindholm to put the game out of reach, giving the Flames home ice advantage in a best-of-three showdown starting Wednesday in Calgary. “A big point in the game there.” “I was a tad nervous there to be honest with you,” smiled Gaudreau, who relieved some of the pressure heaped on him throughout the low-scoring series. DALLAS — Smack dab in the middle of a statement game for the Calgary Flames came a shift several members of the Dallas Stars won’t soon forget. It was their 31st shot on net and it came at the game’s midway point for a 1-0 lead.

Flames Playoff Post-Game: Playoff wins are bigger in Texas as ... (Flames Nation)

The Calgary Flames played pretty well in Games 2 and 3 against the Dallas Stars and arguably deserved better than the two losses they received.

— — — — — — Gaudreau took a hit to the head from Vladislav Namestnikov early in the first period. The Stars pulled Oettinger for the extra attacker with just under six minutes left after Mikael Backlund took an elbowing penalty and the Stars broke up Jacob Markstrom’s shutout attempt on the six-on-four man advantage. (Their pressure was dispelled by Mangiapane taking a penalty off a face-off.) They moved the puck well to set up a point shot and eventually it clicked, with Rasmus Andersson’s one-timer beating Oettinger high to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. The Flames came out with urgency, as you would expect in their situation. The Flames played a really, really good game of hockey on Monday night in Game 4 against the Stars and they were rewarded.

-The top line is always going to be under scrutiny in the playoffs and the Flames trio of Johnny Gaudreau, Elias Lindholm and Matthew Tkachuk came to play tonight. Four minutes later Gaudreau would find a wide open Elias Lindholm in the slot and he doesn't miss from there. Calgary opened the scoring off the stick of Rasmus Andersson, but after that first period goal the offence went dark for a bit.

Can they marry desperation with the precision and attention to detail that their playing system demands (and has been lacking lately)? If it skews towards even strength settings, especially full strength settings, the momentum probably skews towards Calgary. The Calgary Flames (1-2; 1st place, Pacific Division) and Dallas Stars (2-1; 1st wildcard seed, Western Conference) have played three very close, tight-checking games. Expect to see a desperate Flames group. If the idea is to boost the fourth line and give the Flames more offensive and pace balance, it does make some sense. But it also lowers the skill level on a Backlund line that has already had trouble burying chances.

Shesterkin crafted one of the most dominant seasons by a goalie in recent memory. Markstrom played a major role in Calgary securing its Pacific Division title with a 111-point season, most for the Flames since 1988-89. When Rinne retired before the 2021-22 season, he left Nashville's crease in Saros' hands, and the 27-year-old at times single-handedly held the Predators in playoff contention throughout their up-and-down campaign.
