F1 Miami Grand Prix race results: Verstappen beats Leclerc and Sainz (autosport.com)

Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, after passing the Ferrari of Formula 1 world championship rival Charles Leclerc.

Zhou Guanyu was the first retirement of the race when his Alfa Romeo broke down. Hamilton finished sixth, ahead of Bottas, Esteban Ocon, the penalised Alonso and Alex Albon’s Williams. With three laps to go, Verstappen escaped Leclerc’s DRS range and sealed his third win of the year. Perez also pitted for a new set of mediums, but none of the front trio stopped. As soon as he got into DRS range of Leclerc, Verstappen grabbed the lead at Turn 1 on lap nine. Leclerc was running 4.5s behind Verstappen when he pitted on lap 25, rejoining in fourth.

Alonso – now holding a five-second penalty for contact with Gasly – led Schumacher and Ocon at the back of the top 10. "I think I’ll stick to racing," he said when asked by Willy T Ribbs if he was fit enough to step into the boxing ring, "but I appreciate a lot of boxing. Tsunoda was however promoted to 12th after the post-race penalties for Alonso and Ricciardo. That left Williams driver Latifi in P14. The podium saw the top three celebrate in front of Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino – and his statue. Then, on Lap 41, Gasly – who had previously been tapped at the final corner by Alonso – went wide at Turn 8, rejoined, and clashed with Norris, ripping the McLaren’s rear-right tyre off and sending him into a spin. Leclerc prepared his rebuttal, tailing the Red Bull throughout the next lap – but the reigning champion was now in a commanding position. Leclerc was next to pit, a swap to hards taking 3.2 seconds, as he emerged in P4 on Lap 25. A sensor issue was to blame and Perez was back – but had lost considerable time (and some engine power to boot) to Sainz ahead. Perez attempted to pass Sainz on Lap 52 but locked up, both drivers avoiding contact, while Leclerc was under half a second behind Verstappen in the chase for the lead. On Lap 6, he took P6 off Gasly and the seven-time champion was back where he began. Hamilton lamented the fact that he couldn't pit during the VSC but was promoted to P6 when Valtteri Bottas went wide at Turn 17 on Lap 49. Perez took the opportunity to pit for new mediums from P4, emerging there, with hard-shod Verstappen, Leclerc and Sainz ahead.

Serena Williams ducked into Mercedes' hospitality and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny arrived at the venue with Perez and spent most of pre-race at Red Bull with the Mexican driver. Promoters never had a general ticket sale because of crushing early demand and the campus surrounding Hard Rock Stadium was the place to party over the last three days. He then set his sights on Leclerc and used a strong outside pass on the ninth lap to claim the lead. Leclerc got a few looks inside but Verstappen didn't relent and the Dutchman won by 3.7 seconds. Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. had locked out the front row in qualifying for Ferrari, but Verstappen pounced at the start to get ahead of Sainz. Dwyane Wade took selfies on the starting grid and Paris Hilton danced in front of the McLaren garage; Tom Brady, David Beckham and Michael Jordan posed for a pre-race picture with Lewis Hamilton, who hosted former first lady Michelle Obama on Saturday at the track.

It was a strange event for Haas F1, the only American team on the 20-car grid. "We struggled a little bit after five, six laps with the front tires, and then we struggled and basically lost the race in that stage," Leclerc said. After the race, Perex said he's started talks on a new contract with Red Bull but neither side is in a hurry to complete a deal. Promoters never had a general ticket sale because of crushing early demand and the campus surrounding Hard Rock Stadium was the place to party over the last three days.

Sunday's inaugural Miami Grand Prix Formula One race in Miami Gardens, Fla., lived up to its billing as a heavyweight battle.

Mick Schumacher appeared to be on the verge of collecting his first points but while running ninth, he made contact with Vettel and slipped to a 15th-place finish. On Lap 41 of 57, Pierre Gasly in an AlphaTauri and Lando Norris in his McLaren made contact to bring out a safety car. But the Dutch-Belgian Red Bull driver passed Sainz just after the standing start. His earlier wins had come in Saudi Arabia and Italy. Article content Article content

Fake marina with fake water steals show at Miami Grand Prix (CHEK)

Formula One pictured a race in Miami and envisioned sun, sand, beaches and boats. What they got was a fake marina with fake water and all.

“Putting on a good first-year event is a challenge to get everything right, given the size and scale and newness to it,” Brown said. Miami is the 11th different venue to host an F1 race in the United States, but the series had struggled to gain traction in the country until late. It took years for COTA to grow, and behind the “DTS” mania last year’s race in Austin drew more than 300,000 over three days. So, I think putting on a great event, and then having it be sustainable over decades — I don’t say it’s easy to do, but clearly it can be done. A gondola can take guests from the marina to The Beach Club, where Post Malone went head-to-head with F1 qualifying. “Formula One is all around, the amount of guest requests we have is amazing. Some teams were upset Friday over the guest experience inside the Paddock Club, which cost $11,000 for a three-day pass. The U.S. went four years without an F1 event before Circuit of America’s in Austin, Texas, brought the European series back to the States in 2012. The event is the hottest ticket in sports right now. Hard Rock has hosted Super Bowls, college playoff games, a major tennis tournament, international soccer, concerts and the “Rolling Loud” musical festival. It isn’t exactly Monaco, but the man-made marina is a 25,000-square-foot dry dock designed to look like water. It can be found at the corner of NW 27th Ave. and NW 199th St. in Miami Gardens, a land-locked neighbourhood some 15 miles away from F1’s initial desired downtown location.

The victory cut Leclerc's lead over Verstappen to 19 points in the championship, while the Monegasque's Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz completed the podium.

A crash between Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris on Lap 41 triggered the safety car, and when racing resumed on lap 47, Leclerc pushed hard to retake the lead. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz managed to hold off a down on power Sergio Perez to secure the final podium spot, while George Russell charged from 12th to fifth, taking advantage of the safety car and fresher tyres to leapfrog team-mate Lewis Hamilton. F1’s first visit to Miami created plenty of hype pre-event and it resulted in a bumper crowd witnessing Verstappen overhaul polesitter Leclerc, in a race spiced up by a late safety car, after a collision between AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris.
