Max Verstappen turned up the heat in the Formula 1 title battle by claiming his second win on the bounce as he defeated Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in the ...

The trio analyse the track action and and how the event stacked up against other F1 races on the calendar, and if it lived up to the hype. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz managed to hold off a down on power Sergio Perez to secure the final podium spot, while George Russell charged from 12th to fifth, taking advantage of the safety car and fresher tyres to leapfrog team-mate Lewis Hamilton. F1’s first visit to Miami created plenty of hype pre-event and it resulted in a bumper crowd witnessing Verstappen overhaul polesitter Leclerc, in a race spiced up by a late safety car, after a collision between AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Miami Gardens delivered a Superbowl-esque Formula 1 event, with Max Verstappen beating championship rival Charles Leclerc to victory – but it wasn't so ...

It meant AlphaTauri failed to score with either car for the first time this year. It was also a score for Williams on the 45th anniversary of the team’s F1 debut. Alex Albon has been outdriving his Williams all year – and another stellar result looked to be on the cards with strong form in practice. Pierre Gasly ran well in the top 10, but contact with Fernando Alonso caused damage and he then collided with Lando Norris before retiring. And that confidence took another hit when he crashed heavily in practice. Sebastian Vettel thought points were possible, but those hopes were extinguished when Mick Schumacher hit the German with, as Aston Martin boss Mike Krack described, an “over-ambitious” move.

Perez thinks Miami F1 win was on if not for engine issue (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Sergio Perez felt he had a chance of winning in Miami had it not been for a Formula 1 engine sensor issue that cost him an estimated 30 horse power.

"I was just pushing really hard to stay close to him on the corners. So yeah, to be able to finish the race is good." "Unfortunately even with a DRS, I couldn't get close to Carlos, the deficit on the straight-line was quite high.

What stopped Perez dealing Ferrari another Miami F1 blow - The Race (The Race)

The late-race Miami Grand Prix safety car should have provided Sergio Perez with a chance to beat the Ferraris, so why didn't he?

“I think at one point it was really close to being over. “It was too dirty off-line and after that, I couldn’t get close. It was like 10km/h down on the straights.” Perez agreed: “It was never the same. That left him too far back to benefit from Sainz then having a slow pitstop. “The deficit on the straight was quite high and I was just pushing really hard to stay close to him on the corners.

Verstappen cruises to win in inaugural Miami Grand Prix (CTV News)

Verstappen was explosive at the start Sunday and used a pair of aggressive passes to get past Ferrari and current championship leader Charles Leclerc.

"We struggled a little bit after five, six laps with the front tires, and then we struggled and basically lost the race in that stage," Leclerc said. It was a strange event for Haas F1, the only American team on the 20-car grid. After the race, Perez said he's started talks on a new contract with Red Bull but neither side is in a hurry to complete a deal. Promoters never had a general ticket sale because of crushing early demand and the campus surrounding Hard Rock Stadium was the place to party over the last three days. Verstappen started third after Ferrari locked up the front row with Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. in qualifying. His first day racing around the new Formula One circuit in Miami was absolutely horrible.

I am incredibly happy with winning here in Miami, it was an incredible Sunday for us,” said Verstappen, who also took the bonus point for fastest lap. Five drivers who had a race to forget in F1's first Miami GP (crash.net)

The on-track action may have not quite lived up to the pre-race hype as Miami made its hugely-anticipated F1 debut, but it still delivered a key wheel.

And it seemed to do the trick again in the United States. The DNF compounded a miserable, point-less day for McLaren. That brought him into play when the Safety Car came out and Alpine capitalised by calling Ocon in for soft tyres. One point became two when Alonso’s post-race time penalty dumped him out of the top 10. Here are our winners and losers from the inaugural Miami Grand Prix. A trend is now emerging; every race Verstappen has finished this year, he has won.
