Dennis Waterman, the veteran actor known for shows such as Minder and The Sweeney, has died at the age of 74.

The broadcaster Kay Burley tweeted of Waterman: “A brilliant actor who was a staple on our screens throughout the 70s and 80s. He became well-known for singing the theme songs to many of his shows, and was caricatured by David Walliams in Little Britain as a result. Born in London, he was educated at the Corona Theatre school and began his acting career at a young age.

Waterman, who rose to fame playing Detective Sergeant George Carter in the 1970s police drama, died in Spain with his wife by his side.

In 2006, the actor appeared in a live Little Britain skit for Comic Relief alongside the parody character, in which he jokingly disputed the characterisation. The actor also performed the theme tunes to several of his shows including Minder and New Tricks – inspiring a memorable parody of Waterman in the comedy series Little Britain who endlessly pitches himself to star in various TV projects as well as offering to “write the theme tune, sing the theme tune”. An actor from the age of 13, Waterman broke into the mainstream playing the lead role in the BBC drama William as a teen.

British actor Dennis Waterman, who starred in shows including Minder and New Tricks, has died, his family have confirmed.
