Five Questions: Grizzlies vs Warriors Game 3 (Grizzly Bear Blues)

After a game one win, Stephen Curry told Ja Morant “it's gonna be a battle, we're gonna have some fun,” and after his 47-point game two win Morant returned the ...

Memphis deserves a lot of credit, but for the Warriors the main goal has to be to just keep chucking. The Warriors need to counter that with more off ball movement (specifically cuts), and trying to push a little more so they can get into their sets before Memphis’ defense is set. As for scoring in the paint, the Warriors have capitalized on the gravity that Curry, Thompson, and Poole have. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and the Warriors as a whole had an uncharacteristic shooting night in game two. That said, it’s not all bad for Memphis. Brooks obviously hasn’t been having a great season shooting the ball, and the Warriors defense is built around daring struggling shooters to shoot. The’ve used energy and athleticism to compete on the glass, though they’ve also benefited from slightly more opportunities, as the Grizzlies have missed six more shots than the Warriors in the series. It’s possible that with Brooks out, the Grizzlies resort to shooters who handle the Warriors defense a little bit better. Despite having two of the best shooters in NBA history, the Warriors have never been as reliant on the three ball as people believe. Is there anything in the NBA more fun than a superstar perimeter player trying to solve the puzzle that is an elite defense? Two of the most exciting players in the league going head to head. Through two games the Warriors have focused on forcing Morant into low-efficiency shots, but that can only go so far. You hang to every play like it could decide the game, and it becomes so much fun.

Game 3 Injury Report: Warriors vs. Grizzlies (Sports Illustrated)

The Memphis Grizzlies and Golden State Warriors have released their Game 3 injury reports.

For the Memphis Grizzlies, they will be without Santi Aldama, Killian Tillie, and Dillon Brooks. Aldama and Tillie are each dealing with injuries, while Brooks will be serving his one game suspension. While the team was initially hopeful that Andre Iguodala could return for this game, especially with Payton's injury, Iggy is currently being ruled out for Game 3. The Golden State Warriors are back home.

"It's going to be even more of a grind," Memphis' De'Anthony Melton said of the ongoing series. Morant also found time for eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough to avoid a second straight game in which the Warriors earned an advantage on the boards. "Lot of adversity, a lot of adrenaline and emotion. "We've been in a lot of different series that's taken a lot of twists and turns," Curry said. Brooks will sit out Game 3, when Golden State will attempt to shake off one of the worst 3-point shooting efforts in its postseason history. That's because Game 2 featured an ugly incident in the third minute when the Grizzlies' Dillon Brooks leveled Golden State's Gary Payton II from behind on a break-away attempt, sending the guard crashing to the court and fracturing his left elbow.

Stephen Curry is having one of the quieter 25-point nights you'll ever see. It looks like Ja Morant is headed back to the locker room. That's a problem for a team like the Grizzlies that thrives in the frenetic chaos of transition, mismatch hunting and offensive rebounding. It was an occasional curveball, and one the Warriors most prominently used in the second quarter. If this is the version of Klay we get for the rest of the playoffs, the Warriors can absolutely win the championship. Without Gary Payton II in the lineup, the best hope they have is bothering him momentarily. That turned a seven-point lead—which came with plenty of Memphis momentum after Ja Morant sank a half-court shot to close the second quarter—into a 17-point gap that the Grizzlies couldn't overcome. Golden State has never really played this way. He shot below 40 percent from the field in almost half of his regular-season games. It's an advantage this Warriors team has never really had. Five Warriors had at least 17 points in the Game 3 victory, so it's not as though Golden State abandoned their principles against Memphis, but they do seem to have embraced a very simple fact: nobody on the Grizzlies can stay in front of Jordan Poole. Plays like this don't show up in the box score, but they're what made Poole so valuable in Game 3. With the win, Golden State has the opportunity to take what could be a significant lead in their best-of-seven series against Memphis on Monday night in Game 4.

The Grizzlies will likely need to lean on their defense in the event Morant can't go. Morant missed 25 games during the regular season with the Grizzlies posting a 20-5 record. Post-game Warriors guard Jordan Poole was asked about the incident. "I was going for the ball, obviously I don't wanna see anybody get hurt. he appeared visibly agitated before the Grizzlies' medical team led him back to the locker room for further examination. I don't even play like that."

We go over how you can watch Saturday's ABC game between the Grizzlies and Warriors.

Despite stealing homecourt advantage following the win in Game 1, the Warriors’ backcourt of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson has been inefficient from behind the arc through the first two games and will look to get back in rhythm in the Bay Area. After Dillon Brooks’ Flagrant 2 foul in Game 2, the wing was suspended for Game 3. If you don’t have a cable login to access ABC for a live stream, you can get a free trial from YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, AT&T TV Now, FuboTV, or Sling TV to stream the game.
