Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Tampa Bay Lightning – First Round, Game ... (Maple Leafs Hot Stove)

Preview, analysis, quotes & TV info for the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Tampa Bay Lightning playoff game on May 6th, 2022 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

It’s difficult, but it’s part of the process of being on a team. He’s just trying to get the most out of him, and I think he’s realized that. It’s the best time of year to play hockey, so I can bring some enthusiasm to the game and some poise. There’s been a lot of attention paid to the fact that they haven’t been on a line. It’s a little easier to get them on the ice more consistently. I think we’re just at a point in the series where we need to get Spezza involved. It’s notable just how little Nylander and Tavares have played at 5v5 through two games, and as the Leafs look to find more 5v5 offense outside of the top line, these two will need to be a major part of the solution. It’s been a lot for him to take on here. With [Engvall] on that line, it will help us have more ability to get that line out there. After winning the special teams battle with a shorthanded goal and a power-play goal in the first game, the Leafs followed it up with no goals on three opportunities on the power-play and three goals against on the penalty kill in Game 2. Putting aside that there have been some clear issues with discipline for Kyle Clifford and Wayne Simmonds on the fourth line, there are a number of ways a raring-to-go Spezza could help the Leafs tonight. Lastly, William Nylander and John Tavares will re-unite after the pair were split up down the stretch of the regular season due to the consistent theme that any offense they generated at 5v5 seemed to be given back at the other end.

The Tampa forward had a great chance to make it 3-2 a little later in the period, only to hit the post with the Toronto goaltender at his mercy. The score came on a power play with Justin Holl in the penalty box for holding. Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews collected assists on the score that was preceded by a delay-of-game penalty on Patrick Maroon. “He has made some big saves for us this year, but we’re in the playoffs now and that one was a game-saver,” Keefe said. If Toronto can muster another winning effort in two days, it would have an opportunity to close out the series at home in Game 5. David Kampf had the winning goal and Ilkya Mikheyev scored on a pair of empty-netters as Toronto took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Its star centre Steven Stamkos appeared to be set up for the tying score but was turned away on a spectacular save by Jack Campbell.

Leafs winger Ondrej Kase (personal) wasn’t on the ice this morning, but is expected to dress. “It’s best time of year to play hockey,” he said. “I don’t think words can describe how hard it is to watch a game when you’re a player,” Spezza said after the morning skate.

“These are the games we need to win.” “Great save.” There was a bit of a sense on the bench that it’s going in,” Keefe added. “It’s taxing.” “Stamkos doesn’t miss those very much when it comes through [the seam] like that.” I want to continue to find ways to generate more and breakthrough but, overall, 5-on-5 has been tight.” And he’s learned to change speeds, which has really helped a lot. “He’s a great person to be around. “He doesn’t score unimportant goals,” Keefe explains. Next it was Lyubushkin hopping out of the box and into the rush, after serving a silly post-whistle banishment of his own. “It just so happens at this time of year, you need some guys to step out of character a bit. “You need guys to make plays, step up.”

Toronto Maple Leafs Conn Smythe watch: No clear leader after ... (Pension Plan Puppets)

Mitch Marner has 2 goals, 4 assists and is our points leader, and that's the easiest way to identify a potential Conn Smythe winner. Auston Matthews is right ...

I’m going to have to put up two groups from Tampa for the Non-Smythe tonight. The logo is so much better, but don’t confuse me. Who is the Maple Leafs MVP? It was just an empty net goal but Pierre Engvall needs to get shouted out for letting Ilya Mikheyev get his first playoff goal, passing away and easy shot for his teammate. So, after three there’s no clear stand out from a points perspective and (almost) everyone is giving it their all. They now lead the series 2-1, and have outscored the Lightning 13-7 so far in the series.

"A big step," Keefe said. "It's a combination of allowing me to talk to our team and settle down. "They made a great play there. "When he needs to make plays like that he can make them. I'd be lying if I said I don't want to do my best to beat him." "It's pretty upsetting," Colton said. "Getting out to a lead early really benefited us. "I didn't know that ... hopefully it will [keep] going." "We stuck with it," Leafs centre Auston Matthews said. "Stamkos doesn't miss those very much."

"Sometimes with the quality that Tampa has, they're going to make great plays," Campbell said. "Thankfully, our team's been playing so well in front of me and scoring a lot of goals," Campbell said. Toronto Maple Leafs: Lineup Changes Key in 5-2 Win vs Lightning (Editor In Leaf)

The Toronto Maple Leafs made line changes prior to Game 3, and each one of them proved to be the right changes given the situation.

In the loss to the Lightning prior to the playoffs, the Maple Leafs were drawn into this style of game and they lost it via blowout. Justin Holl replaced Timothy Liljegren and the reasoning, in my opinion, was because he wasn’t able to win net-front battles against the larger opposition. Michael Bunting has displayed his ability to pick up the pace in the postseason.
