Penguins One-Timers: Shots, Awful Special Teams, Common ... (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

The Pittsburgh Penguins looked like the slower team but were not without chances. The New York Rangers were a blur of color whizzing around the offensive zone.

If the Penguins are expecting Domingue to be the equal of Shesterkin, that seems to be a bad strategy. Ultimately, the difference wasn’t speed but special teams, a fluky goal off a Penguins defenseman, and a few mistakes that allowed the Rangers to pull away. NEW YORK — The series is tied 1-1.

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith will miss the rest of the postseason after he had core surgery.

The well-traveled 30-year-old Domingue made 35 saves in a 5-2 loss in Game 2. DeSmith entered the playoffs as Pittsburgh’s top goaltender with All-Star Tristan Jarry sidelined with a lower-body injury. The surgery comes three days after DeSmith exited in the second overtime of Pittsburgh’s 4-3 triple-overtime victory over the New York Rangers in Game 1 of their first-round series.

The net now belongs to Louis Domingue for the foreseeable future as Tristan Jarry remains out.

"Obviously not an easy spot for him coming in as a young guy like that, but I think the guys are trying to make him feel welcome and at ease in the room and stuff, because I think that makes a big difference," Blueger said. I think he's excited about the opportunity," Sullivan said. He's played really well for us." But I think he's really excited about the opportunity in front of him." He initially skated to the bench and conferred with head athletic trainer Chris Stewart before going to the locker room. "Definitely a frustrating spot, somewhere I've never been before, but hopefully it's the last time."

"I don't want to say that because they've got two other lines that are good lines too," Gallant said. "Obviously it's important to put the puck in the net," Penguins forward Teddy Blueger said. But Motte has been out since April 9 and Goodrow sustained a lower-body injury in Game 1 that is expected to sideline him the rest of the series. "There have been a number of scoring chances throughout our lineup." "I don't think you're going to be able to get them to zero. It's always a tendency to do a little too much when you focus on one guy or whatnot, but it's just trying to limit their chances as much as we can.

Yikes. DeSmith Has Surgery, Out For Duration of Playoffs (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith is out for the playoffs after having core muscle surgery Friday; Louis Domingue is in the spotlight.

He participated in the practice Friday. Domingue entered cold in Game 1 when DeSmith left and held the fort in the Penguins’ eventual 4-3 triple overtime game — what will forever be known as the spicy pork and broccoli game because Domingue said he ate that during one of the intermissions. Those were the two goalies at practice Friday. However, it seems likely that the Penguins will sink or swim with Domingue until or unless Jarry returns given how inexperienced D’Orio is.
