The 148th edition of the Kentucky Derby is set to take place on Saturday as the iconic race looks to move on from last year's controversy.
Justify -- trained by Baffert -- was the last horse to win all three races back in 2018. Dubbed the "Greatest Two Minutes in Sports" -- a nod to its approximate run time -- the Derby is the first race in US horse racing's coveted Triple Crown in December, arguably continues to overshadow the spectacle which was first held back in 1875, but the Derby is keen to leave the controversy in the past.
Several horses have a legitimate chance to win the 2022 Kentucky Derby, including two who were moved from the Bob Baffert barn to trainer Tim Yakteen.
“Of course, a huge concern for Taiba is he might not have enough foundation or experience,” said White. “Asking Taiba to try and win the Kentucky Derby with only two races under his belt certainly is audacious. It’s is the earliest of the Kentucky Derby’s major preps and the race is a little bit longer than the others. “It’s well documented I’m 0 for 23 in the Derby and I’ve run some Hall of Fame horses into it,” Asmussen said. “He’s got a brilliant mind to go along with his talent, which reminded me a lot of [Triple Crown winner] Justify. … Experience matters in everything in life. Last year, four of the top six finishers in the Derby came out of the Fair Grounds race. Trying to find a winner in this year’s 148th running of the Kentucky Derby is about as easy as getting through the week here without wet weather. “Curlin and Gun Runner both ended up third and went on to be champion horses of the year. There is also Brad Cox, who won last year’s Derby by disqualification, with three horses hoping he actually gets to celebrate a win the same day the race was held. Having won four of his last five races most expected he would be made the favorite. There’s all-time winning trainer Steve Asmussen trying to break an 0 of 23 streak with perhaps the favorite. There’s a lot of good horses. There is noted turf trainer Chad Brown with another favorite trying to win his first Kentucky Derby.
Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale is slated to be back betting the Kentucky Derby this year, with somewhere between $2 million and $3 million to put on the nose ...
Fun as it is to watch Vegas sports books essentially try to run from the McIngvale cyclone, the Derby field is essentially good news because the relatively close “bunching” of the top five faves in the odds means that Mr. McIngvale’s veering, careening and caroming hither and yon with his virtual satchel of $2 million-plus will itself require a bit more hard analysis to actually figure out a favorite. Including Mr. McIngvale as a runway star with the obligatory sporran, knee socks, the fine dark epaulets on the ur-Scottish short jacket, the whole kit. In the picture above, Mr. McIngvale’s selection as a Houston business honoree in 2018 was celebrated in a semi-formal kilt-wearing fashion event. Last year he actually dropped on up to Churchill, which is his wont, to do it on race day at the track. So, his bracing play didn’t cover the mattress/furniture promotion after all, but gauging from the coverage, including in this space, Mr. McIngvale definitely got more than $4 million in free publicity for the somewhat chaotically and extravagantly marketed Mattress Mack “brand.” Such as it is. He’s got plenty to do in Kentucky anyway, checking up on Runhappy, Mr. McIngvale’s Thoroughbred champion standing at stud.

“Yes, it (horse-racing) was pulled out but the idea was these big sports-betting operators would have to come to the horse-racing industry or the pari-mutuel license holders and get it from them,” he said. “It’s too late for the Kentucky Derby weekend but we’re sure hoping and expecting that this will all be available for Queen’s Plate weekend. Lawson has continually stated the horse-racing industry employs approximately 25,000 people and is important to Ontario’s economy. “We’re well down the road in our discussions with these major sports-betting operators, they want to carry it. “We just want to have our interface seamless for the customer, which it needs to be. Single-game sports betting became legal in Canada last summer, with the market opening fully in Ontario on April 4.

Rice was at home in Florida when the news of the positive test broke. Baffert was prepping Medina Spirit for the $20 million Saudi Cup in February. But it was the fifth positive test in a Baffert horse in 14 months. Blowen arranged for the burial of Medina Spirit’s ashes and gave his eulogy. She teaches the horses how to accept a saddle, how to bear the weight of a rider, how to gallop. No one knew the woman in the pink sweater who was kissing Medina Spirit on the face. “He was easy to work with and had a great mind and beautiful stride,” Whitman said. By the first Saturday in May, Medina Spirit was the star of the Baffert barn by default. Baffert’s other top horse, Concert Tour, was left in California after he ran poorly in the Arkansas Derby. Still, no one saw Medina Spirit as a serious threat. “You looked in his eye, and you just knew you had a freaking racehorse.” No one at the Old Friends thoroughbred retirement farm was here to discuss the drug test Medina Spirit failed after the Kentucky Derby a year ago or the disqualification that erased his victory. Within days, he was taking flight in the pasture.

Yakteen said there’s been no discussions about whether Messier and Taiba will stay in his barn. “I enjoyed every aspect of it,” he said. Tim Yakteen has been to the Kentucky Derby with good horses before. ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Tim Yakteen has been to the Kentucky Derby with good horses before. “I just feel really lucky and fortunate.” “I enjoy it tremendously.” “He’s been around long enough. In 1997, Yakteen returned to Baffert’s barn and for the next seven years he was part of the team that worked with back-to-back Kentucky Derby winners Silver Charm and Real Quiet and 2001 Derby champion War Emblem. “I had a goal that I wanted to be part of the industry.” “I was like, ‘Wow, the pope spoke to me,’” Yakteen said. Now the trainer is at Churchill Downs in charge for the first time with two top contenders that used to be trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. Kornacki was the only NBC analyst last year to correctly pick the winner of the race, Medina Spirit -- who was later disqualified for failing a drug test -- and ...
And that is one of the things I am going to be tracking -- where is the money going and is it distorting the betting pool? Kornacki: The run-up to the the Kentucky Derby -- the day leading into it and really the month leading into it -- to me, is like the day leading into and the month leading into an election. So, the challenge is to be aware, to be mindful of that and aware of that all the time. Betting on sports is as old as the events themselves and has become an integral part of fan engagement. It's fun to kind of feel there is an audience out there that I can relate to on that level that maybe isn't part of the election audience. Q: And you explained how this bet changed the odds. I want to provide some valuable and useful information and perspective to that audience, but I don't want to lose the casual horse fans in the audience either. So, there are a ton of question marks around Taiba. Far more question marks than there would be for a horse entering the Kentucky Derby. So, what I want to see on Taiba on Saturday are: What do the odds look like as the day unfolds? And it won't be Justify. We just haven't seen enough.' And of course, it turned out that very limited body of evidence with Justify was telling us something; was telling the horse was the real deal. Q: What do you do when you look at the race? And one that comes to mind, I think, is Messier. Messier in some ways reminds me of Medina Spirit. Comes out of the same race as Medina Spirit heading into the Derby -- the Santa Anita Derby. Medina Spirit ran second in the Santa Anita Derby; Messier ran second in the Santa Anita Derby, actually with the same jockey, John Velaquez. I am very curious about and interested in Messier. I am also interested in the horse that won the Santa Anita Derby, Taiba. Taiba to me is the biggest single wild card in the race because this will be only the third career race that Taiba has run. Kornacki: Well, when you say winner, you have make sure you put the asterisk after it, because we all know what ended up happening with Medina Spirit. But anyone who bet Medina Spirit that day did get to cash the ticket and did get to keep the money, and I did get to do that.
Zandon is hanging on by a bare half-point margin to favored status in the morning line. With just three races to his name, in one of which he was handily ...
He will go to the back, likely run along the inside some, and then have to make his trip. Don’t really like the fact that he did not have a workout until 19 days since the Santa Anita Derby, but he likely had plenty of strong gallops leading up the workout. But there’s a lot out there on Churchill’s track that he has to do in that race besides get comfortable. He has tactical speed so he can put himself in the race. If he gets out quickly and cleanly — yes, it’s still a big if — but if he does, he has a short way around. In the old two-section gate, the inside horses had to make a sort of ungainly half-right turn out of the stall in order not to bounce off the rail. The pedigree says he can get the distance. Let’s return to Epicenter. Is the three hole really and truly that bad? He has been in the Bob Baffert program. That said, it’s a coin flip really between Zandon and Epicenter, and on that scale, Zandon gets the nod from Battaglia because of his post position. Mike Battaglia likes Zandon’s race in the Bluegrass at Keeneland. It was impressive and his workouts at Churchill since the Bluegrass have been impressive. Put another way, Mr. Battaglia’s estimate of the Zandon is a dispatch on how he looks now, at Churchill, and it more than slightly discounts Zandon’s — at best, uneven — three career starts.
The first Saturday in May welcomes the 148th Kentucky Derby, the most celebrated horse race in the country, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
Then, due to racism in the sport – and more broadly, the country – no black jockey got the chance to participate in the race from 1921 to 2000. Historically, the majority of professional jockeys in the U.S. have come from Latin America–countries with large and integrated Indigenous populations. Baffert will not be in attendance on Saturday, and much of his history has been washed from the grounds. Teams compete by completing multiple laps, changing horses twice in the process, riding with simple bridles and no saddles. For the past decade-plus, we’ve covered the important Indigenous stories that are often overlooked by other media. Thoroughbred racing as an industry evolved from the settlers in the American Colonies, with the first organized race by settlers in Maryland in 1745. The horse later died after a workout last December of a possible heart attack. Indian Relay racing has taken off in mainstream popularity at powwows and county fairs since the 1980s. Such high-stakes betting puts immense pressure on owners and trainers to bend the game's rules. Its U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer, Bob Baffert, denied any wrongdoing, but was subsequently suspended from the sport. Along with the excitement, gambling was popular as the sport evolved. Some of these early races began with a “wheel and run” system rather than today’s starting gate.
Things could get interesting Saturday at Churchill Downs, where the winners in 2019 and 2021 were disqualified. The biggest question for these three-year-olds ...
“You have no control over how 20 three-year-olds will handle this volume of crowd for the first time,” Asmussen said. “You just never know what’s going to happen when you open the gate.” After two years of COVID-19 restrictions, the Derby returns in all its noisy, colorful glory. Both Messier and Taiba are trained by Tim Yakteen, Baffert’s one-time assistant. He’ll saddle Epicenter, the early 7-to-2 second choice that earned his first career victory at Churchill Downs last fall. The dark bay colt is trained by Brown, seeking his first Derby win after six losses.

Happy Jack is named after a song by The Who. Messier, who is trying to become the third Canadian-bred horse to win the Derby, was named after the hockey great Mark Messier. Cyberknife is named after the treatment that sent his owner Al Gold’s cancer into remission. One popular change from last year has returned and even expanded, albeit with a significant hike in ticket prices: All seats include unlimited food and drinks, a move intended to reduce lines and the exchange of money. Smith, aboard Taiba, will try to become the oldest jockey to win the Derby at 56. He is trying to win the Derby after only two starts, a feat accomplished only once before, by a horse named Leonatus in 1883. All returned to their regular spots on the calendar in 2021 but allowed a reduced number of patrons. Beside Yakteen, five other trainers will be saddling their first Derby horses: Bhupat Seemar (Summer Is Tomorrow), Koichi Shintani (Crown Pride), John Ortiz (Barber Road), Brian Lynch (Classic Causeway) and Eric Reed (Rich Strike). “Isn’t this great?” was a common phrase heard around the grounds. Messier (8-1 in the morning line) is the more seasoned of the pair, a two-time stakes winner who has never finished worse than second. Curlin, the horse of the year in 2007, finished third that year. Gun Runner, another horse of the year who is proving himself as a stallion, siring this year’s entrants Taiba and Cyberknife, finished third in 2016. “Very late in his career it was on his mind. Messier and Taiba are contenders with similar front-running styles and will be ridden by Hall of Fame jockeys — John Velazquez aboard Messier and Mike Smith on Taiba.

30-1 NBC will broadcast the 2022 Kentucky Derby and provide analysis both before and after the race. One of the early favorites, Taiba, suffered a hit from the post draw with the dreaded No. 12, which has underperformed historically.
Kentucky Derby entrant Taiba works out at Churchill Downs Wednesday, May 4, 2022, in Louisville, Ky. The 148th running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled ...
The depth of contenders this year might be as good as any in recent memory. Unless you are at least 139 years old — we’re guessing that you aren’t — you’ve never seen a horse with just two career starts come to the Kentucky Derby and win. Derby wire-to-wire winners are rare; in the last 20 years, only Authentic (2020) pulled that off. The first Saturday in May became the first Saturday in September in 2020, thanks to the pandemic. This is where Tim Yakteen enters the story. So should the fact that, until a few weeks ago, Taiba was trained by Baffert. Derby-bound horses typically don’t get trained by Baffert unless there’s some serious reason to believe. No horse has drawn the No. 1 post and prevailed since Ferdinand in 1986. He should be flying at the end. (No horse has drawn 1, 2 or 3 and won since Real Quiet in 1998, either.) It’s unsettling for horses to have such much traffic, with more than a dozen other massive animals trying to beat them to the first turn. The garland of roses that will be draped across the winner. Those have all been part of the show at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May for decades. Ah, the traditions of Kentucky Derby day.
The Derby's live odds are proving volcanic this year. After the Churchill betting opened Friday, Taiba rocketed to co-favorite. No two-race horse has won ...
But to answer your question, it’s part what’s been happening in training, part Santa Anita, and yes, part Baffert. But a really big part of this early shift is “Big Money” Mike (Smith). There is no more experienced jockey. In some form or fashion I’m going to bet Mo Donegal, Epicenter, Zandon, Crown Pride, Tawny Port and Cyberknife. I still like Cyberknife a little, and I’ve been hearing good things about the Japanese horse Crown Pride, who I think NBC will be doing something on during their broadcast. You could be right that he gets crushed but I think we have the new 20 stall gate, which isn’t as long as the old double gate. Now he’s on a really good colt from Baffert. Big Money Mike has me worried, okay? Let’s go at him again. 19. Zozos, Brad Cox, Manny Franco, (20-1), 39-1 Note: Until post time at 6:57 p.m. ET, we’ll rigorously update the Churchill odds in this space. 16. Cyberknife, Brad Cox, Florent Geroux, (20-1), 14-1 No two-race horse has won the Derby since...Leonatus, in 1883. Momentarily, anyway, Taiba’s the co-favorite. Predictably, Zandon, the razor-thin morning line favorite, very much did not hold his ground in the track odds yesterday, sliding from 3-1 to 8-1, just a shade behind his rival Messier, three stalls to the inside, at 7-1. Usually, on race day at Churchill, the questions get shaved back a bit.

In honor of the start of the Kentucky Derby, let's take a look back at MLB history through some of the horse names who have been featured in the past.
The Hall of Famer and 14-time All-Star would lead the league in home runs for the Birds in 1966. While he brought home run power to the lineup, he was also known for striking out, leading the league four straight years in that category. He was also one of the most generous and loving people. Perhaps the most obvious connection on the list, a Grand Slam is one of the most exciting moments in baseball. In 1976, that changed with the start of free agency where players can accept bids and earn their worth. He’s not the most famous “hefty lefty” to play at the University of Kentucky, but Zack Thompson sure did make a name for himself. The Cubs most recent came in 2016, ending a drought dating back to 1908. Alex Rodriguez is a a lot of things, including one of the best players to ever play the game. On August 25, 2011, the New York Yankees became the only team to hit three in a single game powered by Robinson Cano, Russell Martin, and Curtis Granderson. On October 11, 1992 Sanders attempted to play in an NFL football game and MLB playoff game in the same day. Flashback to 2001, Game Seven of the World Series. The Powerhouse Yankees against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who were an expansion team that was formed just two years prior. The 2019 Washington Nationals were the definition of improbable.

After the Derby, the Preakness Stakes is up next. You'll have a seven-day free trial first—and right now, the cord-cutting service is dropping the first month’s bill to $10. The Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 7. NBC will carry the Derby this year. (Medina Spirit would die before the year was over.) The 148th annual Derby hopes to put all of that in the past. Last year’s run for the roses was marred by controversy: Winner Medina Spirit was disqualified after the horse tested positive for a banned medication.

Today's Kentucky Derby, horse racing's most well-known event, is an unmistakable metaphor for so many things I see in the current investment markets.
So, enjoy the Triple Crown Races: the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness on May 21 and The Belmont Stakes in June. And more importantly (unless you are in the racing business), treat today’s market environment as a challenge along the lines of winning a 20-horse race. · Epicenter (3): strong chance to win, but in a 20-horse field, a post toward the inside is typically a disadvantage. But as with the riders later today in Kentucky, 2022 is a time when having a gameplan, but being willing to adjust in mid-stream is essential to finishing “in the money,” so to speak. These are not the markets of the past, and every investor needs to not only take notice, but navigate their way through unprecedented economic and market conditions. The 20 horses competing in the Derby this year essentially make up the “market” that bettors can “invest” in for all of 2 minutes. Ideally, you’d want a horse in the 5-15 range, but since post times are drawn, not chosen by the competitors, it’s a luck factor. And, like the markets of today, a Derby victory may have a lot to do with what Ashley referred to as “tactical” moves made by each jockey/horse combination. In that sense, the jockey is more like a portfolio manager, navigating a moving market. Just as many investors have not seen a true bear market in stocks or bonds, many entered in the Kentucky Derby have not dealt with inclement weather, 19 other horses around them, a crowd of perhaps 100,000 or more, or myriad other unique factors that greet them on this first Saturday in May. For owners, trainers and jockeys in the Derby, its about what is commonly known as “The Most Exciting 2 Minutes In Sports.” For investors, the stakes are even higher: these are exactly the kind of stock and bond markets where fortunes are lost and made, where retirements are secured or reversed. This is also where “riders up” is called, and the jockeys hop aboard. Ashley’s commentary, both on the nature of the sport and today’s race, is incorporated below.

Derby track playing fair so far, and Chad Brown's Speak of the Devil has impressive win in Grade 2 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile.
The third race just went official with Lady Rockstar winning an allowance race on turf for trainer Brendan Walsh, who is having a nice weekend. At the same time, Cover Me Up was hustled out of the gate early by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., to get to the rail, set a pretty fast pace up front but still held on for a solid second at 6-to-1. As always, it’s a long haul from the morning until the big race. A late burst got him past the favorite, Warrior Johny. Flavien Prat, the 2019 Derby-winning jockey on Country House, conjured an impressive ride on Speak of the Devil, who swept from last to first very quickly around the far turn. The winner was Creative Minister, one of the favorites, who rallied down the center of the track for trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. to get the victory at 7-2 odds. There’s also strong early money on Cyberknife, who is 13-1 after starting at 20-1 on the morning line. The 2022 Kentucky Derby is here and looking to turn the page after two of the last three races were tarnished by disqualified winners.
In smaller field races, there’s an inside bias of establishing an inside position going into the first turn and having a shorter trip around the race track. Churchill Downs used a new starting gate in 2020 for the Derby, with all 20 gates on a single starting gate. Of note: Because superfectas are tricky to predict, they can offer big payouts in a race like the Derby ($51,400 in 2019), but they can get expensive. This allows you to put the heavy favorite on top, three horses that could finish second, and then a long shot or two in third. 🤔 Aloha West, who won the BC Sprint, is back off the layoff.— Katherine Terrell (@Kat_Terrell) https://t.co/cq1l1bFoHC May 7, 2022 His jockey and trainer, Joel Rosario and Steven Asmussen, will team up again with Kentucky Derby favorite Epicenter. Epicenter leads all horses with 13 percent bet on the No. 3 horse. In its simplest traditional form, a Mint Julep is made with fresh mint, bourbon (not whisky), simple syrup, and shaved or crushed ice. It’s all three bets on one ticket, and while it costs more (betting $2 across the board is a $6 bet), you could still get a chunk of money even if that longshot comes in third. Nobody has won from inside post since 1986, will have to drop back and avoid traffic to have a chance. The good thing about Derby Day is that so much money is being put in the pools, and a lot of it from casual betters, that you can often get a good price on a favorite. Twenty horses make up this year's field, led by favorites Epicenter, Taiba, Zandon and Messier. There will be no Bob Baffert; the six-time Derby-winning trainer was suspended after Medina Spirit's DQ from last year's race.
