How to Watch 'Doctor Strange 2': Is 'The Multiverse of Madness' on ... (Collider.com)

Excited about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Here's how you can watch the new MCU movie, whether it's on streaming, and more.

No Way Home set the tone for the new direction of multiversal antics in the MCU, and Multiverse of Madness is set to take them to a new extreme. Multiverse of Madness follows up directly after the events of Spider-Man’s latest outing that featured Dr. Strange reigning in a major multiversal tear of his own creation. The events of this show lead directly into Wanda’s state of mind at the start of Multiverse of Madness, and the Scarlet Witch appears to be a major threat to the safety of the sacred timeline. Disney+ is the home of all things Marvel in the streaming world, but Multiverse of Madness will not be available on the streamer for some time. Multiverse of Madness marks the return of director Sam Raimi to the comic book world. Marvel Studios is in the midst of one of the longest hot streaks in the history of film.

Patrick Stewart on Playing Charles Xavier Again in 'Doctor Strange 2 ... (Variety)

Patrick Stewart discusses returning to his 'X-Men' role of Charles Xavier for Marvel Studios' 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.'

And when I first saw the monster that I was going to be driving in this one, I was dismayed. That was my only concern, was that I would somehow get out of control and go all the way down the stairs in this thing! I was unfamiliar, and in fact, a lot of what I saw on Monday night, I had to work hard to connect these things together. And even when I was a kid, I used to read books instead of comics. And just like “Picard,” I was grateful for it, because I could think refreshingly about who he was and how he related to others. What was it like for you to revisit Professor X?

'Doctor Strange 2' incursions could set up an X-Men-Avengers ... (Inverse)

Incursions are introduced to the MCU in 'Multiverse of Madness.' What are they? And what do they hint about future Avengers sequels?

The presence of Reed Richards and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier in Multiverse of Madness is all the proof we need that the MCU is about to undergo some drastic changes. There are only the broad strokes: Incursions destroy worlds and billions of lives are lost. The mid-credits scene of Multiverse of Madness, which introduce Charlize Theron as the sorceress Clea, further reveals Doctor Strange has “caused an incursion.” Where? How? Again, that’s not explained. Once that happens, the universes are erased completely. And what do they indicate about the future of the MCU? Multiverse of Madness isn’t too concerned with incursions in its plot.

Doctor Strange 2: Who played Black Bolt, Reed Richards, and ... (Polygon)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced some shocking characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — including from the X-Men and the ...

Who even is that? It seems like the Incursion Era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Earth-838 began and ended with its Doctor Strange, who caused the multiversal barriers to weaken and accepted his execution by Black Bolt as punishment. It’s unclear whether Krasinski is truly Marvel Studios’ pick for Reed Richards in their new Fantastic Four movie, or if his appearance in Multiverse of Madness is just a treat for fans. Following comics lore, this would imply that Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman, Reed’s wife), Valeria Richards (their super-intelligent daughter), and Franklin Richards (their reality-warping son) are denizens of Earth-838. Does this mean he’ll play Professor X when and if the character appears in the main universe of the MCU? Well, it’s the multiverse, so anything could happen. It seems that in Earth-838, just as it is in the main MCU, Blackagar Boltagon is king of the Inhumans, a secretive society of long-lived, human-adjacent, superpowered individuals created by aliens. Where he’s from: Most folks have cast these events to the shadows of memory, but Marvel Studios, partnering with ABC TV, tried to get an Inhumans series off the ground in 2017. And so, for its Illuminati, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness does a frankly incredible job of knitting together some very deep cuts from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, references to comic book-only details, online fan campaigns, and a cartoon from the 1990s. Heroes of cosmic power (Doctor Strange) and venerated leadership skills (Steve Rogers/Captain America) have also been roped into the group from time to time. Among the Illuminati’s greatest hits are the time they accidentally provoked a secret Skrull invasion of Earth, the time they put the Hulk on a rocket into space until he got so mad he came back with an entire space army, and the Incursion era. They’re a secret cabal of world leaders who are also superheroes. With all magical possibility at its doorstep, it’s no surprise that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has some tricks up its sleeve.

'Doctor Strange 2' credits scene: Yes, Charlize Theron is Clea (Los Angeles Times)

It also could mean that the integration or a reboot of previously non-MCU superhero teams like the X-Men and Fantastic 4 is imminent, particularly after cameos from Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Mr. Fantastic (John Krasinski). (A MCU “Fantastic Four” is officially in development, although it recently lost “Spider-Man” director Jon Watts.) Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Clea was introduced in “Strange Tales #126" (1964). She spent her early years as a captive of Dormammu and his sister Umar, her mother. Before Theron was revealed in the role, there had been fan speculation that either “Harry Potter” alum Emma Watson or “Strange” co-star Rachel McAdams (who plays Dr. Christine Palmer in the film) would take on the iconic part. For less spoiler-y “Strange” content check out our review and a report from the world premiere on the movie’s connections to “WandaVision.” As established earlier in the film, an incursion is a breach in reality in which parallel universes collide. The scene features the good doctor (Benedict Cumberbatch) walking down a New York City street before a disembodied voice calls out his name.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Doctor Strange In The Multiverse ... (Cinema Blend)

Benedict Cumberbatch manipulates dark magic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. (Image credit: Marvel Studios). Wow, has it really been ...

Continuing to release conversions like Doctor Strange 2’s exemplary work is one of the keys to that potential success, and this movie should inspire further faith in fans willing to pay for a third-dimensional thrill ride. For the last time in this 3D review, I’ll say it clearly and bluntly: this film is not in the wrong hands. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness doesn’t waste any time getting started, and the 3D presentation keeps pace with that sort of energy. With great 3D powers comes great 3D responsibility, as the image you’re being shown has to be manipulated to a certain degree to get that third-dimensional punch. No matter where Doctor Strange 2 hangs its hat, the depth drawn in its image is present to enlarge the world on screen. The care and love is back in MCU 3D, and Multiverse of Madness has a lot to show off to anyone who wants to take the trip. From America Chavez’s opening sprint with an alternate Strange to obtain the Book of Vishanti, third-dimensional thrills are already in play, hitting every aspect you’d want in a 3D movie. As if that wasn’t enough pressure on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ 3D conversion to deliver, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made the following comments about the matter at the premiere’s red carpet: That definitely sounds like history repeating itself, as that same scenario of concern/reaction came up in my 3D review for Doctor Strange. So is Doctor Strange 2 worth that sort of hype? After all of the hype and waiting that’s led us to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it’s finally time to step back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s big screen component. Putting aside the business practice of regularly releasing comic films in 3D for a profit boost, the visuals on display in the trailers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness definitely suggest a potentially eye-popping time at the movies. If you’re looking for spoiler-free commentary on how director Sam Raimi’s return to the world of comic adaptations fares as a movie experience, you can find that in our own Eric Eisenberg’s official review.

'Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness' Post-Credits Scenes ... (Forbes)

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness opened in theaters this weekend and I just went and saw the movie this afternoon. I'll have my review up soon, ...

And bringing Bruce Campbell into the mix as a fun little cameo is pretty clever. You’ll note that this movie is much darker than most MCU films and includes lots of fun little horror elements. This is the more important of the two. It’s all very funny, but it’s more funny if you know that the vendor is played by none other than Bruce Campbell. She tells our superhero wizard that he’s created an ‘Incursion’ (when two different universes collide, potentially destroying one or both in the process) and that he needs to come and help. As I noted previously, there’s a mid-credits and a post-credits scene in Doctor Strange 2.

Doctor Strange's Starry Cameos and End Credits Scene, Explained (Vanity Fair)

How In the Multiverse of Madness sets up the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future, and teases a new character played by an Oscar winner.

Each member of the Illuminati is introduced with a little space built in for audience gasps or cheers. Midway through the story, Doctor Strange ventures through a series of parallel dimensions with Xochitl Gomez's America Chavez, who is being hunted by the Scarlet Witch for her ability to leapfrog from one reality into the next. Lashana Lynch's Maria Rambeau turns up on the Illuminati as the cosmic-powered protector. The term “illuminati” is a loaded phrase now (thanks, Qanon weirdos!). In Marvel Comics lore, though, it refers to an alliance of superheroes, mostly comprised of the leaders of other teams. That's the most likely scenario, although anything is possible. If those two words don't cross your mind at least a few times during Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, then the new Marvel Studios movie probably isn't doing its job.

How [SPOILER] in the 'Doctor Strange 2' Post-Credits Scene Sets ... (Variety)

The surprise introduction of a major star in 'Doctor Strange 2' has surprising implications the future of Marvel Studios.

Strange and Clea don’t have much history with Kang in the comics per se, but since the Disney+ series “Loki” established that Kang has designs to subjugate all of the multiverse, there’s a decent chance that Strange and Clea’s mission to prevent a multiversal incursion could lead them to pop up in the third “Ant-Man” movie. It almost seems like, by casting an actor too big and busy to turn over her career wholesale to the MCU, Marvel is signaling (intentionally or not) that the era of massive team-up films is over. It’s no surprise that Disney and Marvel are radio silent on their plans for Theron and Clea. But at the very least, we can reasonably expect Cumberbatch and Theron to headline the third “Doctor Strange” movie — and likely much sooner than the six year gap between the first and second films. Then she uses an energy blade to cut into the fabric of reality, exposing the Dark Dimension — as introduced in the first “Doctor Strange” movie. Jonathan Majors is set to appear in 2023’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” as Kang the Conqueror — a Marvel comics Big Bad on par with Thanos in terms of universe-threatening ambition. In the post-credits scene of “Multiverse of Madness” — or, technically, the mid-credits scene — we see Strange walking down a Manhattan street when suddenly, a white haired, purple-costumed Theron calls out his name.

How the end of 'Multiverse of Madness' sets up 'Doctor Strange 3' (Inverse)

'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' is here, and it's ending may surprise you. But what does it mean for a potential 'Doctor Strange 3'?

It’s also worth noting that while Doctor Strange does sometimes sport a third eye in the comics, that one comes from the Eye of Agamotto and is a special ability exclusively affiliated with the powers of good. This Strange variant is corrupted by the Darkhold (an evil book of spells last seen in WandaVision) and sports a spooky third eye in the center of his forehead to prove it. By the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, both Stephen Strange and his co-star Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) manage to achieve some sort of closure.

A Short History of How That Star Nabbed a Beloved Superhero ... (IndieWire)

After years of being rumored to lead a new "Fantastic Four" reboot, John Krasinski appeared as Mr. Fantastic in "Doctor Strange 2."

Sure, maybe the Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic for “Doctor Strange 2” was just a way to cater to fans. Mr. Fantastic did say in “Doctor Strange 2” that he has a wife and kids… “Spider-Man: No Way Home” director Jon Watts pulled out of the film on April 29, just a week before Krasinski appeared in the role for “Doctor Strange 2.” Watts reportedly stepped away to focus on other non-MCU projects, including an upcoming Apple Original film starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. “That dude is not only the most talented guy, but the nicest guy. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.” The “Imaginary Friends” writer-director previously told ComicBook.com that he’d “jump in” as a director to any Marvel film if MCU boss Feige asked him. “We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. Yet after years of Krasinski hinting at the role, the “Office” alum officially donned the stretchy blue onesie to become the MCU superhero. She added of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “It’s been exhausted. “I acted my heart out that that day and it didn’t work out.” “That is fan-casting. But if they are considering me for Mr. Fantastic, continue to consider me because I would love it.”

'Doctor Strange 2' Scribe Michael Waldron On “Emotional” 'Loki ... (Deadline)

If you're working in the new multiverse phase of the Marvel Cinematic universe, it's indeed a juggling act and balancing it all has been screenwriter Michael ...

With season 2 about to shoot, Waldron tells Hero Nation: “In creating the show in the first place, the only way it’s worth doing to me is that we can find a new story to tell with this character. “I spent the bulk of this movie thinking we’d be coming out before No Way Home and that we were going to be blowing the lid on the multiverse. However, there was another movie that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had to connect to, and that was Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which also featured Benedict Cumberbatch’s magic maestro.

Doctor Strange's Multiverse of Madness Mid-Credits Meet-Cute ... (Vulture)

Charlize Theron appears as Clea Strange in a Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness mid-credits scene. We explain the character's Marvel Comics history ...

Clea would appear off and on in Strange comics over the years, usually whenever Dormammu resurfaced to try and wrest away control of the Dark Dimension, but the romance between the two sorcerers cooled. Armed with this knowledge, she defeated her mother and became the new ruler and Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension. And though Stephen refused her offer to join her, the two eventually marry in Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #3 (1988), creating a magical bond between them. Strange opens the third eye on his forehead and jumps in with a new sense of fearlessness about what lies ahead. Eventually, Clea’s personality took on added depth after she was cast out of the Dark Dimension and lost her natural-born magical abilities on Earth. She began training under Stephen Strange, and served as his apprentice and love interest for many years. The mid-credits scene finds Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) happier than ever and recently recovered from a splitting headache that reveals a third eye on his forehead, a consequence of his use of the Darkhold. But that’s not the only thing he has to worry about. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is packed enough with crowd-pleasing cameos both big and small, but it doesn’t let the credits roll by without delivering one last surprise.

Doctor Strange 2: Is Wanda Dead? New Rumor Teases Scarlet ... (The Direct)

Perhaps Scarlet Witch could similarly be a prequel to fill in gaps between projects, possibly even exploring the two years between WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness, centering around Wanda's growing Darkhold corruption. Despite Scarlet Witch's sacrifice to destroy the Darkhold at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it's tough to imagine a character as popular as Wanda staying dead for long. If Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch does ever reunite with her former teammates, it will undoubtedly be a tough task for her to win their trust back. Unless House of Harkness serves as a prequel to WandaVision, exploring Agatha's magical adventures through history, then the dark magic witch will need somebody to free her of this spell. Wanda was willing to stop at nothing in the hopes of completing her goal, building up a surprising death tool along the way and completing her transformation into a Marvel villain. Either by resurrection, a Multiverse Variant, or the shocking reveal of her survival, Elizabeth Olsen will undoubtedly be back in the MCU. But when and where?
