'The Circle' is spicing up the game in season 4! EW got executive producer Toni Ireland to explain how they got Spice Girls Emma Bunton and Mel B to play as ...

They all have different times when they can go to the roof and enjoy that time, and they were exactly the same. We try to get a good balance because we have a pool of contestants that we choose from. Some people that you think are really good and really outgoing and bubbly and great in social situations might not be able to connect across a screen, and other people are just absolutely natural at it. That's what they wanted and that's what we wanted as well. We try and get a good balance of maybe like a third [of the cast] is catfish or something like that. They were a pleasure to have on the show. They really wanted to come in as players and wanted the immersive experience of being in The Circle. We explained how they would be a catfish. We knew that we wanted to reveal them to the other players at a certain point and we'd have a really fun game and twist worked out for them. The whole plan was that they would never stay for the duration, and they didn't want to be in the chance of winning or anything like that. We just said, "Would you like to come on and play the game?" We started brainstorming ideas, and we loved the idea of a pair playing the game. "When the [season 4 trailer] went out, everyone started speculating, and I'm really excited for everyone to find out they're actually playing the game," The Circle executive producer Toni Ireland tells EW. "We were so lucky to get them because they're just absolute icons that transcend generations.

'The Circle' Netflix: Why two Spice Girls are on Season 4 (Los Angeles Times)

Executive producer Toni Ireland explains how Mel B and Emma Bunton came to play on the social media-based competition: 'They were just all in.'

Without knowing the consequences of the twist, the players then vote on who they each think is the Spice Girls’ persona; a majority of them have to be fooled in order for Emma and B to complete their mission. (Bunton and B try to fool the others by saying “Jared” isn’t a Spice Girls fan, yet is still excited at the prospect of playing alongside his sister’s favorite musicians.) “We need to think of what our books are called, and how many books have we written,” Bunton stresses in the second episode. Between strategic chats and fun challenges, viewers get to see the two Spice Girls in a relatively normal setting: stewing berries in their pajamas, tidying up the kitchen, playing card games and lounging alongside B’s dog, Cookie. Thankfully, Mel B was also a fan, and the two alumnae of the 1990s girl group were game to go in together and play as a single persona. Next: the movie.

The Circle Season 4 Premiere Recap: Two Spice Girls Become One ... (TVLine)

Season 4 kicked off on Wednesday with four new episodes and a surprising twist: Spice Girls members Emma Bunton and Melanie “Mel B” Brown joined the reality ...

Rachel, a Spice Girls super fan, raised suspicions after missing a question about which music video featured stop-motion animation of the group as fairies. Then came the Spice Girls trivia game where they downplayed Jared’s familiarity with the group by missing a question about the name of the Spice Girls movie. Do you think the Spice Girls will fool enough players to increase the cash prize? In Episode 4, Emma and Mel B. continued their mission, even claiming that Jared’s sister was a Spice Girls fan to throw everyone off their scent. Cue everyone — including Emma and Mel B. — dancing and lip syncing to the group’s iconic hit, “Wannabe.” The players were also informed that there were Spice Girls catfishing among them, and that they needed to vote for the profile they thought Emma and Mel B. were behind. Parker’s response was a huge red flag, since she was playing as a 56-year-old marriage therapist who would probably know what that is.

How Spice Girls Mel B and Emma Bunton Joined 'The Circle' (MarieClaire.com)

Netflix's social media competition show The Circle has returned for a fourth season, and there are some surprising celebrities among the players.

They claim that Jared's sister was a huge Spice Girls fan, but they answer an obvious question wrong to keep the players guessing. "They were a pleasure to have on the show," she said. "We need to think of what our books are called, and how many books have we written," Bunton says after they enter the game. They were just special guests there to create a bit of mischief, which is exactly what they did." (They probably would have been eliminated quick, à la faux-Lance Bass in season 2). So instead of playing as themselves, they joined the season as a catfishing team.
