It was one year ago tomorrow that Jack Rathbone realized a lifelong dream. Except, it wasn't at all how he imagined it.
It had a lot more to do with Rathbone off the ice. Abbotsford is set to begin the Calder Cup Playoffs in Bakersfield tonight, with a best-of-three against the Edmonton Oilers’ affiliate. Rathbone wants to have a long NHL career, but playing big minutes on a consistent basis in the AHL is probably good for his development. “The talk with me and being down here is trying to round out my 200-foot game and I think I’ve taken some big strides towards that on both sides of the puck… I’ve met him a few times now and had a couple conversations with him. Definitely a fun year and hopefully keep rolling in the playoffs.” He has spoken a lot with Ryan Johnson, the Canucks’ senior director of player development and Abbotsford’s GM. Rathbone was an offensive dynamo for the Abbotsford Canucks this season, scoring 40 points (10-30-40) in 39 games. “Your goal is obviously to play at the highest level possible, but I’ve learned a ton. “We’ve got a really good leadership group. Stepping onto the ice at Rogers Arena on May 4, 2021, Rathbone played his first NHL game without a single Canucks fan in attendance. But his stint in Vancouver was short-lived.
The Vancouver Canucks might not be in the playoffs, but the same can't be said for Abbotsford. The team will be kicking off their Calder Cup chase on ...
However, Abbotsford was unable to secure a victory in their final game, falling to the Manitoba Moose by an embarrassing score of 6-0. Rathbone, whose season was riddled with injury and COVID-related issues, still managed to produce at just over a point-per-game pace, notching 40 points in 39 games. Although the Russian rookie never played in Abbotsford this season, they’ll still surely benefit from his size, speed and overall skill.

Abbotsford’s offensive depth will eventually overwhelm the Condors, but I think it will take a little bit of time for the Canucks to adjust to all the new faces. Special teams will also play a huge factor and it really depends on how tight the game is called. The Canucks will also have to solve a very tough netminder in Stuart Skinner. All eyes of Canucks fans will be on Vasily Podkolzin, who could very easily be the best player in this series. @FPHCanucksbreaks down what will be a hotly contested series between the Canucks & @Condors: https://t.co/QBm9NEEP7g With all of that said, the Condors are a good team with a solid goaltender in Stuart Skinner who can steal a game or two. It's only fitting that the first ever regular-season game for the @AbbyCanucksis also their first ever playoff opponent. “This could be the best franchise in the American Hockey League over time. Bakersfield’s power play finished at 18.7 per cent, good for 21st in the league. Defensively they will be without Philip Broberg, who was called up to Edmonton for the NHL playoffs. Goalies Spencer Martin and Artrus Silovs, the team’s most valuable player Sheldon Dries and forwards Nic Petan and Will Lockwood all have been re-assigned to Abbotsford. Making his AHL debut will be Vancouver first-round pick Vasily Podkolzin. He recorded 14 goals and 12 assists in 79 games with Vancouver in his rookie campaign.

Notes: Canucks forward Will Lockwood (2016, Rd. 3), who is battling an injury, did not dress. He needs to work hard and come in and play the same way. Martin turned away an early barrage of shots to keep the Condors at bay, making 20 saves in the first period — including several with his team short-handed. Meanwhile, Jett Woo, the right-handed defenceman taken by Vancouver in the second round of the 2018 NHL entry draft, continued his recent deployment as a forward, skating on the third line. The most notable scratch was 2021 second-round draft pick Danila Klimovich — a disappointing development for those who wanted to see the 19-year-old Belarusian play alongside his good friend Podkolzin. Podkolzin saw some power play time and was engaged all game, though he didn’t have much to show for his efforts through two periods.

Tim Schaller then pushed the puck wide on a short-handed rush as time expired.
