Alouettes select Syracuse LB Richards No. 1 overall in CFL Draft (TSN)

TORONTO — Tyrell Richards is a football player again. The Montreal Alouettes selected the former Syracuse linebacker first overall in the CFL draft Tuesday ...

The six-foot-six, 305-pound Zerr, of Langenburg, Sask., was a first team All-Canadian and Canada West all-star in 2021 but has accepted an invitation to the New York Giants mini camp. He was invited to the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets mini camps. The Montreal Alouettes selected the former Syracuse linebacker first overall in the CFL draft Tuesday night. The six-foot-three, 247-pound Ottawa native spent his first three college seasons as a linebacker before adding defensive end to his repertoire last year. The Redblacks completed the second round selecting Penn State's Jesse Luketa, the CFL scouting bureau's second-ranked draft prospect. Linebacker Tyrell Richards was the first player taken in the CFL draft Tuesday night. Toronto got great value in the second round, taking Western defensive lineman Deionte Knight at No. 10 and Bryant running back Daniel Adeboboye five picks later. "Honestly, leading up to the combine it was kind of rough but after that day, I started feeling like a football player again," Richards said. When my first started ringing, I was like, 'OK, it's happening right now.' I thought there was a one-in-nine shot for every team but I'm excited to be going to B.C." Richards attended the CFL combine in March and performed well, posting a 37-inch vertical jump, 19 reps in the 225-pound bench press and running the 40-yard dash in 4.60 seconds. "I know I'm going to get moved inside . . . to more of a guard-centre type. The Ottawa Redblacks took Zach Pelehos, an offensive lineman from the University of Ottawa, second overall.

Blue Bombers trade 1st round pick in CFL Draft, select defensive ... (Globalnews.ca)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers acquired defensive tackle Cameron Lawson in a draft-day deal with the Montreal Alouettes.

The Bombers also signed three American players on Tuesday with training camp just around the corner. The former member of the University of Waterloo Warriors was ranked ninth in the latest CFL Scouting Bureau rankings. The Bombers selected Michael Sleep-Dalton in the 24th slot. The Bombers nabbed Aussie punter Tom Hackett in the first round at sixth overall. Lawson was the Alouettes’ second-round pick in 2020 and only appeared in four games with Montreal last season as a rookie after an outstanding university career. The Bombers didn’t have a pick until the second round and used their first selection on defensive back Tyrell Ford in the 13th slot.

He didn’t post eye-popping numbers at the CFL Combine, but the native of Markham, Ont. interviewed well and was a U Sports first-team All-Canadian as a returner in 2021. Played left tackle with the Golden Bears but will have to move inside to guard at the CFL level. A four-time academic All-Canadian in engineering who should move from tackle to guard at the professional level. Mostly played defensive end with the Mustangs but projects as a CFL defensive tackle at six-foot-four and 275 pounds. Was named a U Sports second-team All-Canadian in 2021 after posting five sacks in as many games with the Golden Gaels. Projects as an impact special teams player with the potential to contribute at weak-side linebacker, strong-side linebacker, and safety. His father, Cory, played running back with the B.C. Lions (1993-1997) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1999-2000). The Delta, B.C. native was named a U Sports first-team All-Canadian and Canada West’s Player of the Year in 2021 after scoring nine touchdowns in just six games. I thought we would see University of Saskatchewan offensive lineman Noah Zerr taken with this pick but I think this is the right pick for the Riders, who should be able to draft a solid blocker in round two. Will need time to adjust to the professional level, but projects as a legitimate CFL quarterback. Pellehos has the attitude, strength, and mobility — he just needs to hone his technique. A versatile six-foot-four, 232-pound defender with the potential to contribute at defensive end, linebacker, safety and on special teams.

The five best value selections from the 2022 CFL Draft - 3DownNation (3downnation.com)

The 2022 CFL Draft has come and gone but it's not too late to look back at some of the best picks that were made on Tuesday night.

In the meantime he should be a solid contributor for Winnipeg on special teams as a cover man and return specialist. The five-foot-eleven, 217-pound native of Kingston, Jamaica could contribute at running back, weak-side linebacker, strong-side linebacker, safety, and on special teams. He was a first-team OUA all-star as a special teams cover man in 2021 and has the physical tools replicate that success at the professional level. There were whispers going into the CFL Combine that Edwards was going to run poorly but he ended up posting a 4.80 forty-yard dash, which is perfectly reasonable for a 223-pound linebacker who will make his living on special teams. The six-foot, 188-pound defensive back ran an elite 4.42 forty-yard dash at the CFL Combine while leaping a 36.5-inch vertical jump and ten-foot, three-inch broad jump. Teams all enter draft day with different scouting reports and positional needs but at the end of the day their goal is the same: maximize the value of each respective pick.
