Marlon 'Chito' Vera scored multiple knockdowns over five rounds to beat Rob Font by unanimous decision in arguably the biggest win of his career at UFC ...

The one minute break was enough for Font to recover but it was a short lived reprieve because Vera got creative yet again — this time with a hook kick that landed flush. Font showed incredible heart to gut it out until the final horn while Vera looked fresh as if he was ready to go another 25 minutes. Font’s output was astronomical as he was constantly throwing three and four punch combinations but once again Vera was able to make him pay late in the round. Vera blitzed him with punches in an attempt to get the finish but Font survived thanks to time running out. Font was putting a lot of zip behind his right hand as he continued to focus on his boxing while also throwing some hard uppercuts whenever Vera got in close. While he had to battle through an awe-inspiring amount of output coming from Font throughout the fight, Vera continuously connected with his biggest strikes just before each round ended as he came close to several finishes.

Marlon Vera roughs up Rob Font in unanimous-decision win at UFC ... (ESPN)

Marlon Vera scored arguably the biggest win of his career Saturday night, when he battered Rob Font in a five-round unanimous-decision victory.

In the fourth, it was a wicked head kick from Vera that dropped Font for the third time. "[Nos.] 4, 3, and 2," said Vera, on the ranked opponents he wishes to face next. In reality, a stoppage Saturday probably would have been better for Font, who showed otherworldly toughness but turned into a sitting target for Vera as the fight progressed. Vera, who is from Ecuador, has won three in a row. All three judges scored the 135-pound contest in his favor: 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. It's arguably the biggest win of Vera's career.

UFC Fight Night predictions -- Rob Font vs. Marlon Vera: Fight card ... (CBSSports.com)

Font and Vera are bubbling underneath bantamweight's absolute best and the UFC Apex may serve as a breakout moment for the winner.

Visit SportsLine now to get detailed top picks on UFC Fight Night, all from the insider who's up more than $10,000 on MMA picks the past two years, and find out. Oddsmakers have this fight close to a pick'em and that feels justified despite Font's failure to make weight by 2.5 pounds on Friday. Font has some of the best boxing and ranged striking in the division, but his early knockout success in the UFC has not followed him up the ladder. However, while Vera may have scored an ugly, picture-perfect knockout of Edgar at UFC 268, it came after losing Round 1 and most of Round 2 against a veteran that is well on the downslide. Can't get enough boxing and MMA? Get the latest in the world of combat sports from two of the best in the business. Veterans fill out the rest of the undercard on Saturday night as former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski is set to take on Jake Collier in the co-main event. Arlovski, who held the title all the way back in 2004, has done well to remain relevant as a gatekeeper of sorts in the division. I was the one that was supposed to escape and kick his ass. That's not a thing. Rob Font and Marlon Vera are pining to prove they have what it takes to take out the best bantamweights on the planet. Intent on making an impression at Font's expense, "Chito" would not be surprised to see a UFC bantamweight title shot in his near future. Font (19-5) is on his comeback tour after being outperformed by Jose Aldo in December. Font had moments of success against the legendary featherweight champion, but it was a clear unanimous decision loss for Saturday's headliner.

Relentless Marlon Vera loses statistical battle to Rob Font, but takes ... (MMA Junkie)

Font looked great for the first 10 minutes and landed a near-record amount of significant strikes for a UFC bantamweight fight. But Vera came on strong in the ...

And while Font may have landed more in the round, Vera landed the harder shots. Late in the third, Vera landed a jumping knee that wobbled Font. And after a couple seconds of dizziness, Font fell to the canvas. Vera worked kicks to Font’s legs, but didn’t drop to the canvas with him. But with two minutes left in the fourth, Vera landed a kick to the face. With less than 10 seconds left, Vera landed a few short elbows, but not enough to get referee Jason Herzog to stop the fight. In the third, Font abandoned his striking early and went for a takedown. And while Vera had more output in the second, Font continued to throw at will – and to be first with the majority of his strikes. He went for a single-leg takedown, purely in defensive mode, and Vera drilled him with hammer fists and punches while he covered up. Vera (21-7-1 MMA, 11-6 UFC) beat Font (19-6 MMA, 9-5 UFC), who missed the bantamweight limit on the scale Friday, with a pair of 49-46 scores and a 48-47. Vera tried to turn things around in the second by pushing forward with jabs and kicks. His combinations were on point early, and Vera had to continue to look for low kicks to try to keep Font at bay. But Vera came on strong in the later rounds and got his hand raised thanks to four big moments, a lot more visible damage inflicted, and the ability to walk through Font’s constant pressure.

Rob Font vs. Marlon Vera Odds Prediction: Bet the Total in Main ... (The Action Network)

Sean Zerillo breaks down Saturday's matchup between Rob Font and Marlon Vera at UFC Fight Night (UFC APEX).

At a three percentage point edge, you can play that line up to -150 (60% implied), and I found odds of -138 (58% implied) at WynnBet. And while it’s less of an issue in a five-round fight, he does need to pick up the pace in Round 2; because Font has proven that he can sustain a solid pace for 25 minutes in consecutive bouts. If he manages to get on top of Font, he could secure a 10-8 round or potentially find a finish; whereas Font may try to prioritize control. After that, each subsequent power shot had a noticeable effect on Font — and the apparent power differential swung every round in favor of the Brazilian. He tends to give away the first round in most of his bouts, which is a big problem in a three-round fight. Instead of betting Vera pre-fight, I’ll look to target him Live after Round 1 or Round 2. While Font is an excellent technical boxer, who fights behind a crisp jab, he doesn’t carry a ton of power for the 135-pound division. However, both fighters appear to be exceedingly tough to put away, with one combined finish loss on their career records. Vera builds as his fights go, but we still haven’t seen him in a 25-minute encounter. Of the two, I prefer Chito’s offensive grappling. Against Jose Aldo, Font lost all but one round on a single scorecard, despite landing more strikes in every round. 6/25/87

UFC Fight Night Report: Marlon Vera defeats Rob Font in a five ... (POST Wrestling)

Font has looked impressive in recent fights, defeating the likes of Cody Garbrandt and Marlon Moraes, but was coming off of a tough loss to Jose Aldo in his ...

One last time, Vera hurt Font in the final seconds of the round, landing a sidekick to the head, but this time, Font was able to stay on his feet, and this one went the distance. Font was fighting at a ridiculous pace, but Vera has never been one to get overwhelmed in terms of activity, and he was holding his own here, landing strong kicks to the head and body. Connelly landed a series of solid knees to the midsection of Elkins, and it seemed as though the momentum was shifting in his favor, but Elkins was able to bring him back to the ground before time expired in the round. As time was running out in the round, Arlovski loaded up with a big spinning back fist, and Collier ducked under it to take Arlovski down to end the round. With a minute to go in the round, Meerschaert pressed Jotko against the cage as he attempted to bring the fight to the ground, but Jotko defended successfully, and the round ended in this position. Fili is one of the most durable fighters in the division, but Brito caught him with a bomb here, and with this stoppage, Joanderson Brito became the first fighter to finish Andre Fili since 2016. Meerschaert was finally successful in taking Jotko down around the midway point of the round, however, Jotko popped right back to his feet, and secured a takedown of his own. Lainesse certainly has impressive power, but he had a hard time dealing with Green’s pace here, and by the time that Green escaped to his feet for the final time, the momentum of the fight had certainly shifted in Green’s favor, as Lainesse was looking exhausted. A huge right hand from Lainesse floored Green early in the second round, and he followed Green to the ground as he attempted to finish the fight. Breeden was really overwhelming Levy with his output early in this round, and Levy was looking absolutely exhausted, as he desperately attempted to take the fight to the ground. The corner of Mike Breeden told him he was in need of a finish and stepped on the gas as he attempted to put Levy away early in round three. Levy secured a takedown in the final minute of the round, but Breeden returned to his feet before time expired.
