Marlon Vera scored arguably the biggest win of his career Saturday night, when he battered Rob Font in a five-round unanimous-decision victory.
In the fourth, it was a wicked head kick from Vera that dropped Font for the third time. "[Nos.] 4, 3, and 2," said Vera, on the ranked opponents he wishes to face next. In reality, a stoppage Saturday probably would have been better for Font, who showed otherworldly toughness but turned into a sitting target for Vera as the fight progressed. Vera, who is from Ecuador, has won three in a row. All three judges scored the 135-pound contest in his favor: 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. It's arguably the biggest win of Vera's career.
Font looked great for the first 10 minutes and landed a near-record amount of significant strikes for a UFC bantamweight fight. But Vera came on strong in the ...
And while Font may have landed more in the round, Vera landed the harder shots. Late in the third, Vera landed a jumping knee that wobbled Font. And after a couple seconds of dizziness, Font fell to the canvas. Vera worked kicks to Font’s legs, but didn’t drop to the canvas with him. But with two minutes left in the fourth, Vera landed a kick to the face. With less than 10 seconds left, Vera landed a few short elbows, but not enough to get referee Jason Herzog to stop the fight. In the third, Font abandoned his striking early and went for a takedown. And while Vera had more output in the second, Font continued to throw at will – and to be first with the majority of his strikes. He went for a single-leg takedown, purely in defensive mode, and Vera drilled him with hammer fists and punches while he covered up. Vera (21-7-1 MMA, 11-6 UFC) beat Font (19-6 MMA, 9-5 UFC), who missed the bantamweight limit on the scale Friday, with a pair of 49-46 scores and a 48-47. Vera tried to turn things around in the second by pushing forward with jabs and kicks. His combinations were on point early, and Vera had to continue to look for low kicks to try to keep Font at bay. But Vera came on strong in the later rounds and got his hand raised thanks to four big moments, a lot more visible damage inflicted, and the ability to walk through Font’s constant pressure.
Font has looked impressive in recent fights, defeating the likes of Cody Garbrandt and Marlon Moraes, but was coming off of a tough loss to Jose Aldo in his ...
One last time, Vera hurt Font in the final seconds of the round, landing a sidekick to the head, but this time, Font was able to stay on his feet, and this one went the distance. Font was fighting at a ridiculous pace, but Vera has never been one to get overwhelmed in terms of activity, and he was holding his own here, landing strong kicks to the head and body. Connelly landed a series of solid knees to the midsection of Elkins, and it seemed as though the momentum was shifting in his favor, but Elkins was able to bring him back to the ground before time expired in the round. As time was running out in the round, Arlovski loaded up with a big spinning back fist, and Collier ducked under it to take Arlovski down to end the round. With a minute to go in the round, Meerschaert pressed Jotko against the cage as he attempted to bring the fight to the ground, but Jotko defended successfully, and the round ended in this position. Fili is one of the most durable fighters in the division, but Brito caught him with a bomb here, and with this stoppage, Joanderson Brito became the first fighter to finish Andre Fili since 2016. Meerschaert was finally successful in taking Jotko down around the midway point of the round, however, Jotko popped right back to his feet, and secured a takedown of his own. Lainesse certainly has impressive power, but he had a hard time dealing with Green’s pace here, and by the time that Green escaped to his feet for the final time, the momentum of the fight had certainly shifted in Green’s favor, as Lainesse was looking exhausted. A huge right hand from Lainesse floored Green early in the second round, and he followed Green to the ground as he attempted to finish the fight. Breeden was really overwhelming Levy with his output early in this round, and Levy was looking absolutely exhausted, as he desperately attempted to take the fight to the ground. The corner of Mike Breeden told him he was in need of a finish and stepped on the gas as he attempted to put Levy away early in round three. Levy secured a takedown in the final minute of the round, but Breeden returned to his feet before time expired.
Vera's power and creative striking repeatedly floored an ultra-tough, volume-heavy Font over 25 minutes.
Immediately afterwards, Vera called for a fight with the third, second and first ranked bantamweight contenders during his post-fight interview. Vera started showboating before the end of the fight as a terribly battered Font looked on. Vera landed a thumping left hook in the final 15 seconds that dropped Font and had him scrambling to survive to the bell. Font was landing the more frequent, impactful blows for almost the entirety of the round as Vera took his foot off the gas. A stunning hook kick dropped Font and exasperated a cut on Font's forehead. Vera was animated heading into Round 3, eager to capitalize on the damage he dished out in the final moments of Round 2.
Vera took home the impressive win, 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46, in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 35 event.
In the end, Font survived until the final bell, but it was Vera who took home a very impressive win, 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46. Vera still found moments to counter, and his kicks remained a potent weapon when he found space to throw. Vera was clearly the fresher man entering the fourth, but Font was still walking forward and firing off pinpoint punches. In the closing seconds of the frame, however, a Vera left hook sent his opponent to the canvas, and he finished the round landing big shots from a dominant position. Vera followed, landing a few well-placed elbows and forearms before the bell. As the round wore on, it was Font who was generally the one walking forward, and he was striking with greater volume, as well.

The one minute break was enough for Font to recover but it was a short lived reprieve because Vera got creative yet again — this time with a hook kick that landed flush. Font showed incredible heart to gut it out until the final horn while Vera looked fresh as if he was ready to go another 25 minutes. Font’s output was astronomical as he was constantly throwing three and four punch combinations but once again Vera was able to make him pay late in the round. Vera blitzed him with punches in an attempt to get the finish but Font survived thanks to time running out. Font was putting a lot of zip behind his right hand as he continued to focus on his boxing while also throwing some hard uppercuts whenever Vera got in close. While he had to battle through an awe-inspiring amount of output coming from Font throughout the fight, Vera continuously connected with his biggest strikes just before each round ended as he came close to several finishes.

The UFC handed out post-fight bonuses after Saturday's card, and one fighter got to double dip.
But Vera landed a bunch, as well, and he landed the far more punishing ones. Brito landed a huge right hook, then needed about 10 punches on the canvas to put Fili away in just 41 seconds. But Figueiredo was quick to grab da Silva’s leg, and just 78 seconds into the fight da Silva tapped to a perfect kneebar.

“I would love to fight Aldo again, especially in a five-rounder – just because he declined a five-rounder when he fought in (2020), December,” Vera said. I showed today that I can be calm and collected in those situations.” Vera and Aldo first fought in a three-round bout at UFC Fight Night 183 in December 2020, which Aldo won via unanimous decision. In each of the final four rounds, Vera had Font hurt to the point of nearly finishing the fight. I just picked him apart and I showed I could hurt him. “Every time you get in there, you learn the job,” Vera told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at a post-fight news conference.
After a pivotal win over Rob Font at UFC Vegas 53, Marlon Vera wants another crack at Jose Aldo.
- UFC 273 Event T-Shirt Whether it’s Aldo or another top-ranked opponent, he vowed to get a quicker start next time around. “They know how to cut weight, and I don’t have any problem about it, but I do believe big weight cuts is just as equal as cheating, so I’m a guy that keeps my weight at [152, 155 pounds], but it’s because I’m training year-round. “I was close to putting him out a couple of times, but you’ve got to be smart in there. “I would love to fight Aldo again, and especially in a five-rounder, just because he declined a five-rounder when we fought last December,” said Vera, referring to a December 2020 loss to Aldo in the co-headliner of UFC Vegas 17. “I would love to kick his ass, and if we get to match again, I will finish again.
Vera's terminator act is remarkably consistent. In 19 UFC fights, Vera has never been knocked down, let alone finished. He often loses the first round then ...
Even in his only losses in the last four years to Jose Aldo and Yadong, Vera forced highly competitive fights and had moments where his opponents looked rather uncomfortable while faced with a seemingly un-killable contender. In Vera’s case, however, his deep gas tank makes it easier to maintain that composure and stay within himself, rather than over-extend in desperation and get truly cracked. Firstly, Vera does a great job of keeping his guard high. Some fighters can take harder shots than others merely because of how their skulls and necks are built, and “Chito” is surely blessed in this regard. “Chito” is fighting killers too, heavy-handed proven knockout artists like Song Yadong and John Lineker. He’s not a next-level athlete, but Font stands out because he puts together quality form in his punches and combinations with considerable pop.
