Before hospitalization, most of the children experienced vomiting and diarrhea, while some experienced upper respiratory symptoms. Cases have also been reported in Illinois and elsewhere. Adenovirus 41 is known to cause gastroenteritis in children, but "it is not usually known as a cause of hepatitis in otherwise healthy children," the agency said.

Severe hepatitis among children may be linked to adenovirus: WHO (WION)

According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), the severe cases of hepatitis being detected in children might be linked to adenovirus infection.

The WHO said adenovirus was caused among children who had a weak immune system but is not usually seen in healthy children. The WHO had informed that the acute case of hepatitis was also detected among children in Israel, Romania, Belgium and the Netherlands with ages ranging from 1 month to 16 years. Parents are being advised to be on the lookout for symptoms and to seek medical attention if they are concerned. A number of researches are being conducted in order to determine the potential explanations of the mystery hepatitis, and nothing has been yet confirmed. Adenovirus is known to transmit from individual to individual through direct contact, coughing, sneezing, or even by trying to touch an adenovirus-containing entity and afterwards touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. According to reports, the children were in good health prior to falling ill and being diagnosed. There is a decent possibility that the symptoms will not appear for between one to six months after you contract the disease. It is typically transmitted when there is a human interaction with the blood, open wounds, or bodily fluids of someone infected with the HBV. Hepatitis can also be caused by alcohol, some such medications, and immune disorders.

For example, the agency said that “increased susceptibility [to adenoviruses] amongst young children following a lower level of circulation of adenovirus during the COVID-19 pandemic” might be responsible. However, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported this week that four pediatric cases of acute hepatitis had occurred in that state. None of the affected children in Alabama died. Six of the children tested positive for the Epstein-Barr virus, but they had no antibodies against this common virus. As was found in many of the cases investigated by the WHO, “all nine patients [in Alabama] tested positive for adenovirus,” Baker and colleagues reported. In these cases, otherwise healthy children have developed liver disease so severe as to require hospitalization.

Because of the number of cases and the severity of the disease in children, scientists are urgently investigating the cause of the outbreak. Sampling the population (both adults and children) to get an idea of how prevalent adenovirus 41 is in these reporting areas versus other areas of low to no incidence would help firm up the link. However, none of the cases reported in the UK had received a Covid vaccine and the Covid vaccines that do use adenoviruses use an unrelated virus that cannot multiply. Early in the outbreak, epidemiologists sought to identify contact links with these cases and, of course, to identify what the cause of the viral hepatitis was. According to the UK Health Security Agency, adenovirus was the most common pathogen found in 40 of 53 confirmed cases tested in the UK. Read on to hear Dr Cheryl Walter, a lecturer in Biomedical Science at the University of Hull, go over adenoviruses and the questions surrounding the child hepatitis outbreak.

THE DISEASE: Hepatitis is usually caused by one of several contagious hepatitis viruses that have not been found in the affected children. It is unknown whether that virus is a cause or is somehow contributing to the outbreak. Some types of the virus can cause colds but authorities are also looking at a version that can cause digestive problems. M Health Fairview confirmed they have reported at least two cases of hepatitis from an unknown origin. Children aged 1 month to 16 years have been affected. This includes two children who had severe outcomes, one liver transplant, and one fatality.

Doctors say the chances of a child falling ill with the condition are vanishingly small. As a result, many children are only now contracting viruses they would normally have got as newborns. Just how worried should we be about the mystery virus giving children hepatitis? Experts say that one thing is for certain – the hepatitis cases are unconnected to the Covid vaccines, because none of the children hospitalised had been vaccinated. Scientists say a more intriguing theory is that the cases could be caused by a virus they have been unable to identify. This is due to the fact that the majority are under five, so not eligible for a Covid jab. (File image) Experts believe it is possible that Covid is also connected to the phenomenon, but the exact nature of that connection is still unclear. The majority of cases have been in the UK, but children in the US, Japan and Israel are now being affected. But they also say that, given how many of the patients appear to be carrying the pathogen, it is highly likely that adenovirus 41F is in some way connected to the outbreak. - Majority of cases have been in UK, but children in the US, Japan and Israel are now being affected Hepatitis is the term used to describe inflammation in the liver, an organ that helps filter toxins out of the body.

Wisconsin child hepatitis cases, health officials investigate (FOX 6 Milwaukee)

The Wisconsin DHS is investigating at least four hepatitis cases in children, including one who needed a liver transplant and one who died.

"We need to know: Is this a mutated virus, a variant if you will that’s more infectious and more likely to cause the infection in the liver, or is this just a random occurrence?" The WHO reports that in 10% of cases, children needed liver transplants. The DHS put out a health network alert so clinicians know to test and report. "The newness part of this is really that it’s infecting healthy kids and seems to be higher numbers than we would expect." He said it’s been known to cause hepatitis in the past. The four children also tested positive for adenovirus, according to DHS.
