Ajay Devgn's dour Runway 34 takes inspiration from other risky landing films before turning into a dreary legal drama.
Vikrant’s parting shot, to a young pilot asking for advice, is, “Always take care of your passengers.” Had Runway 34 cared for its passengers, this flight might have been more bearable. Runway 34 is based on an actual incident from 2015, which involved a ‘blind’ landing and a subsequent civil investigation. But the last hour is an unrelieved drag, with Bachchan’s gleeful prodding, Singh’s weeping and Devgn’s tired dutifulness. Vikrant takes a difficult decision: they’ll divert to Trivandrum instead of the normal backup, Bangalore. A warning from air traffic control—cyclone incoming, don’t land in Trivandrum—goes undelivered. The big difference is that, in that film, Denzel Washington’s pilot really does have a drinking problem; the film reckons with it honestly after the landing. Ajay Devgn’s Runway 34, which he directed, produced and stars in, is nowhere as ludicrous as Heropanti 2, the Tiger Shroff vehicle that also released this week.
It was a surprisingly low start for Runway 34 as 3.50 crores* came in. The film was indeed a niche affair and that too for the multiplexes.
This means if audience word of mouth indeed catches up then the Ajay Devgn directed film could well keep growing over the weekend, stabilise on Monday and then earn a lot more on the Eid holiday. Moreover, the film has a really slick and stylish look to it as well, which made it a good offering for the class audiences. The film was indeed a niche affair and that too for the multiplexes.

Directed by Ajay Devgn himself, 'Runway 34' also features Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh in key roles. These figures are one of the lowest opening-day numbers for both Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff. It remains to be seen whether ‘Heropanti 2’ and ‘Runway 34’ manage to cash in during the Eid holiday. Tiger Shroff's 'HeroPanmti 2' and Ajay Devgn's 'Runway 34'. Both the film was billed as big-budget, multi starrer and expected to bring in moolah at the box office.

The good thing is, that word-of-mouth is positive and will show the effect today and tomorrow with a good jump in numbers. However, what’s surprising is that Ajay’s film has started on a much lower note than what was predicted in a clash scenario. Runway 34 starring Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh and Amitabh Bachchan has finally landed at the box office.
'Runway 34' has scored a very low opening day figure. Directed by Ajay Devgn, this film narrated a thrilling drama but it has failed to strike a chord.
At the outset, Runway 34 comes across as a partial remake of the award-winning Denzel Washington film Flight (2012), which was based on a seasoned pilot ...
In a manner as unconvincing as Devgn’s arguments when promoting Hindi as the national language, Runway 34 has time to throw in some supposedly miraculous twists in the film’s third act. The flight itself does occasionally live up to the survivalist thrills Runway 34 promises but the screenplay and Devgn’s direction are its worst enemy, as horrendous attempts at comedy, featuring a cameo appearance from Youtuber CarryMinati, get in the way. As uncreative as this sounds, Runway 34 perhaps would have worked better as a straight remake of Flight. But then Devgn’s character would have to actually and honestly engage with his deep personal flaws instead of simply indulging in some faux-heroic spiel about him caring too much about his career and his passengers’ safety.
Ajay Devgn-starrer Runway 34 released in the theatres on April 29. The film opened to just Rs 3 crore.
