With loud tools across the board, Liberty quarterback Malik Willis may have the highest ceiling of the 2022 quarterback prospects.

By no means are Willis and Wilson the same player; Wilson was far more complete as a prospect coming out. Willis' strengths fall right in line with the present—and seemingly future—of the quarterback position. Quarterback Malik Willis proved a divisive evaluation in the 2022 NFL Draft. Willis embodies the "tools-y" skillset in-vogue in the pros.

Malik Willis spent the final two years of his career at Liberty, where he developed into a first-round quarterback prospect. Here's why he ended up there ...

"He gonna give you what you need and He gonna give it to you on His time. Willis felt that Liberty — an Evangelical university — was a good fit for him. First and foremost, he knew that he needed to be able to play at his next stop, wherever it may be. "I needed to be able to come somewhere to play," Willis told ESPN. "I said somewhere that had a need. He believes that his lack of dedication in the film room led Malzahn to effectively disqualify him from the competition. It didn't matter where I had to go." After all, he had just two years of eligibility remaining at the time of his transfer in 2019. Going into the 2019 season, Willis was hopeful that he would get a chance to compete for the starting job. I had just played really well in the spring game, but I learned the hard way that the spring game doesn't matter. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown while running for 309 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries in that limited action. That said, don't write Willis off just because he went to a non-Power 5 school. Willis initially transferred away from Auburn because he was unable to earn playing time.

Willis, 22, has been under a microscope since his college career ended, and he has taken it all in stride. The Steelers kept him in Pittsburgh with the 20th overall pick.

NFL mock draft 2022 for Rounds 2-3: Malik Willis' wait ends with ... (Sporting News AU)

Now that the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft is in the books, there's still plenty of good talent available among the Day 2 prospects.

The Eagles need some inside consideration after moving on from Alex Singleton with Kyzir White serving as a limited veteran option. Tindall is a perfect fit for their scheme with his speed and range. Tolbert has intriguing raw skills including size and speed to think he can develop into the ideal No. 2 with better hands and routes. The Broncos need to tap into some 3-4 defensive line help with Shelby Harris leaving as part of the Russell Wilson trade. Walker can add a more consistent rushing element to their offense. The Packers stay patient at wide receiver for Aaron Rodgers with their kind of offensive lineman. The Bears need a field-stretcher opposite new No. 1 Darnell Mooney with Allen Robinson gone. They can tap into the Austrian import's immense physical and athletic upside. Ridder's experience, leadership, strong arm and sometimes dazzling athleticism provides the welcome makeup for their new franchise passer. Dean is a rangy playmaker who does everything well required of the position, including fly over the field and inspire with his leadership. Here's projecting what might happen with many good fits for each team from No. 33 to No. 105 overall: But with 32 players off the board, there are still six rounds of 230 more picks left to be made.

There's plenty of first-round-caliber talent still waiting at the start of Day 2, including some notable names at key positions.

Ultimately, even though Ojabo might be a full year or more from becoming a reliable and consistent starter, his explosiveness and burgeoning set of pass-rush moves will earn him plenty of chances to make a splash. Consistency will be key at the next level, however, as his linear and occasionally out-of-control approach too often takes him out of plays. A torn anterior cruciate ligament knocked him off track, but he could still round into a No. 1 receiver if he can fill out his 6-3, 195-pound frame and learn not to rely so heavily on his ball skills. At 6-6 and 283 pounds, his size might actually work against him given his leverage issues and struggles to anchor on the interior. As a designated pass rusher, he should find that his initial burst and extensive know-how will provide him fairly regularly with a path to the quarterback. Still, Corral is essentially a mystery box as an NFL quarterback prospect because his work in a scheme dependent on RPOs and play action make him a precarious projection. Following in the footsteps of 2021 first-rounder Payton Turner, Hall is Houston's latest long, disruptive defensive lineman whose career appears to be on the upswing. Utilizing a 6-3, 248-pound pass rusher effectively might require some creativity, but the effort would be worthwhile to field one of college football's most consistently disruptive defenders. Good luck to any offensive lineman trying to keep the 6-4, 325-pound Jones at bay in a one-on-one matchup. Pitre can grapple with receivers from the slot, chase down running backs in the backfield or create havoc as a blitzer, making him a valuable and versatile piece for an attacking scheme. Far from a finished product, Mafe is still learning to tap into his explosive get-off and impressive power to become a complete pass rusher. Dean also can squeeze past blockers as a blitzer and stick with running backs and tight ends all around the field in coverage.

Malik Willis NFL Draft news: What missing out on the 1st round ... (DraftKings Nation)

Liberty quarterback Malik Willis is still on board, setting up some interesting scenarios for the second day of the draft.

The Seattle Seahawks have the 40th and 41st picks, so they could be a team to watch. The Carolina Panthers were another team linked to Willis prior to the draft. And despite the fact that they have Tom Brady, the Bucs could be a dark horse contender for Willis. They need a youngster to develop behind Touchdown Tom, and Willis could benefit from a year as an understudy. That’s one advantage to picking a quarterback in the first round—an extra contract year with a team-friendly rate, compared to the market for quarterbacks at any rate. Compare that to the first overall pick, who’ll count for almost $7.9 million against the cap on a four-year deal worth about $37 million. There’s a steep drop off in a player’s contract value between the first and second round.

Tampa Bay traded out of the pick and now sit at No. 33 overall. The Jets, who were regarded as a likely suitor, were one of the most logical destinations and they used the No. 10 overall selection on Ohio State's Garrett Wilson. It would have been acceptable for them to over commit to the position knowing that the offense is why this team is so successful. Despite wide receiver Robby Anderson's public outcry, Carolina has been linked to a potential trade for Mayfield. It is difficult to envision the NFC South franchise running it back with Sam Darnold at quarterback.

However, now that we're onto Day 2, the prospect of getting a potential star QB may be too good to pass up again. Behind Seattle, the Colts, Falcons, Lions, Commanders and Saints (No. 49) could be lurking as trade-up threats for Willis. Indy and Washington both acquired a veteran QB this offseason, but Matt Ryan is about to turn 37 and it wouldn't hurt to have an insurance policy for Carson Wentz, who is coming off a couple of rough seasons. Yet he was one of four players in the green room without a new team by the end of Thursday, along with linebacker Nakobe Dean, cornerback Kyler Gordon and fellow quarterback Matt Corral. Would the Vikings consider taking Willis? Or might they look to capitalize on their positioning and trade down?

That would allow them to jump ahead of the Titans, Giants, and Texans, who hold picks 35-37 and could all be in the Willis market. The more likely scenario involving the Vikings and Willis is that they capitalize on their positioning and get good value out of another move down the board. And the Vikings' leadership has professed over and over that Cousins is their quarterback and that they believe he can lead them to contention. I'm not sure the Vikings will want to make another trade with the Lions that allows them to grab a potentially franchise-changing quarterback, but the Seahawks, Falcons, and other teams could make sense as trade partners. They also have picks at 66 and 77, which will allow them to add several impact players — and gives them the ammo to move up or down if the value is right. Will the Saints draft Malik Willis? (Saints Wire)

2022 NFL draft QB prospect Malik Willis was not picked in the first round, meaning he may be available for the New Orleans Saints in Round 2.

Maybe that changes if a quarterback they like — maybe Willis — is still available once they’re on the clock. But the Saints have made all-in moves to prop up Winston by moving early to get him better weapons and better production, so long-term planning hasn’t been the emphasis so far. They also aren’t in the greatest position to pick their favorite passer at No. 49 overall, with 14 different teams picking ahead of them at least once. Saints quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry could spend the year working with him while Winston focuses on leading New Orleans back to the playoffs — much like Alex Smith did with the Kansas City Chiefs prior to Patrick Mahomes’ emergence as one of the best football players on the planet. But the college offense he played in (and, frankly, the low level of competition he faced) did little to develop his skills as a passer, so he’s going to need time to polish his mechanics and get more comfortable surveying the field to attack all levels of the defense. Plus, New Orleans still has some very real holes to address on their roster.

Evidently, those concerns were enough to drop Willis to the third round. He was discussed as a potential option for the Panthers with the No. 6 overall pick and was also frequently connected to the Steelers at No. 20 overall. Everybody loves the talent, but the offense he plays in is so simple. There weren't many potential landing spots for him and Pitt's Kenny Pickett, but it was presumed that a quarterback-needy team would trade up for him if he slide past the Steelers at 20. No quarterbacks were chosen in the second round. That certainly has led to some of the hesitancy with him not getting selected.

The Tennessee Titans traded up to select quarterback Malik Willis with the No. 86 overall pick on Friday during the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Mocked as high as No. 2 overall, Wills' precipitous fall into the middle of the third round came as teams were unsure how long it would take the quarterback to develop into a pro-level passer and processor. Given his contract and production as a top-15 QB, Tannehill wasn't going anywhere in 2022. Despite a mediocre supporting cast, Willis shined against lesser opponents, using his athletic gifts to shred defenses with his arm and legs. But there were questions about his processing in the offense that Liberty runs. The Liberty product boasts a cannon for an arm and can make NFL throws with ease. Despite being just 6-feet, the QB has a thick lower half that allows him to run over defenders.
