Hyman's OT winner sends Oilers to victory over Sharks (TSN)

EDMONTON — There wasn't anything left to play for, but the Edmonton Oilers still kept their hot streak going as playoff preparation.

NOTES: Forward Jesse Puljujarvi returned for the Oilers after missing the last three games with an illness. Edmonton got back into the game midway through it despite being outshot 26-13 at that point. “But we knew we could trust our process and go back to the simple things and keep chipping away at it. “It was one of those ones where we knew we weren’t fully on the top of our game,” said defenceman Brett Kulak, who assisted on the overtime goal. Zach Hyman scored his career-high 27th goal of the season 1:37 into overtime as the Oilers overcame a dreadful start to record a 5-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. Edmonton Oilers rally for OT win over Sharks (Globalnews.ca)

The Edmonton Oilers came from behind to outlast the San Jose Sharks 5-4 Thursday night at Rogers Place.

The Oilers (48-27-6) will host Vancouver on Friday to conclude the team’s regular season. “I’m focused on playing my own game and trying to help the team any way I can, and if I can score a goal, that’s great.” With 3:23 to go, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins set up Hyman for a one-timer to end the game. “It’s special for him, and (it was) a big goal at that,” Woodcroft said. We can score two just as quick and do it all the time.” “At two goals, the game is far from out of hand for us.

Game Notes Sharks @ Oilers: Keep Winning (Oilers Nation)

— I'm sure Woodcroft's message in the final two games is to keep playing sound hockey. I could see him reduce the minutes of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and ...

They will need some young, cost-effective players who can contribute for the Sharks to have any hopes of competing for the playoffs next season. The Arizona Coyotes defeated Minnesota 5-3 on Tuesday and came back from a 3-0 deficit in the third period to defeat Dallas 4-3 in overtime last night. In 20 appearances Smith is 14-5-1 with a .926Sv% and 2.40 GAA. Last season in 32 appearances he was 21-6-2 with a .923Sv% and 2.31 GAA. Outside of the five-game stretch between December 29th to February 9th, when he was coming back from injury, and re-aggravated an injury, he has played very well in his other 55 appearances (he had a .920Sv% in first three starts this season). Suggestions this is just a two-week hot-streak are misguided. He tie Oates, Dionne and Esposito with one more and surpass all three if he scores two points in each of the final two games. The current 12 wins in 13 games is the most in franchise history. He started the season with 574 points and to reach 600 and 700 in the same season would be quite the feat. — Nothing is official, but two different sources told me they think the Oilers/Kings series is looking to play on May 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th for the first five games. They went 10-0-1-3 in 2004 (W-L-T-OTL) and 11-0-3 (tie) in 1989. The team that finishes higher will travel to Calgary for round one, while the lower seed will take on Colorado. The Penguins had a combined two scoring chances off the cycle and off the rush. — I can’t remember the exact day, but Woodcroft mentioned the team goal of reaching 100 points. The Oilers are 24-9-3 since Woodcroft and Dave Manson were promoted from Bakersfield.

Forward Jesse Puljujarvi returned for the Oilers after missing the last three games with an illness. “It was one of our better games offensively on the cycle, generating chances; there were some positives out of this game,” Sharks head coach Bob Boughner said. Edmonton got back into the game midway through the period, despite being outshot 26-13 at that point. “But we knew we could trust our process and go back to the simple things and keep chipping away at it. The Oilers tied the game with seven minutes to play in the middle frame as Leon Draisaitl made a backhand spin pass to Yamamoto, who beat Reimer for his career-best 20th of the season. “It was one of those ones where we knew we weren’t fully on the top of our game,” said defenseman Brett Kulak, who assisted on the overtime goal.

Player grades: Three comebacks later, Oilers pull out overtime win ... (Edmonton Journal)

Sharks 4, Oilers 5 (OT) There are lots of adjectives that might apply to Thursday night's NHL game at Rogers Place, but “polished” wouldn't be one of them.…

Had his struggles on the powerplay where he made mistakes on 2 terrific Sharks chances including a turnover that led to a Logan Couture breakaway. Looked like a deer in the headlights for much of the game, beginning with a miscommunication with Koskinen on his very first shift that ended with the red light flashing. Got the Oilers on the board with a powerplay one-timer from the slot, this after largely creating the chance by tipping Bouchard’s outside shot into the traffic in front. The former came from driving to the net and creating a distraction as the puck bounced off of him and on to the stick of McLeod, who buried it. No points and no shots, but a couple of booming hits and an important contribution on Ryan’s goal, engaging Nicolas Meloche on the edge of the crease. Robbed by Reimer on a couple of great powerplay chances, he chipped in at least 3 exquisite passes: a terrific feed to Puljujarvi on the lip of the crease on a delayed penalty; a behind-the-back connection with Yamamoto that the winger converted for the 2-2; and a thread-the-needle feed that sent McDavid in alone in overtime. His booming check on Timo Meier midway in the first period was the first sign of life from an Oilers side that had slept through the alarm clock. Perhaps marginally at fault on San Jose’s powerplay goal, but played a more direct role in Edmonton’s third, when his quick shot from the point was tipped home by Ryan. His 40th point of the season. Had a high-event game with a high-event partner (Broberg), and was ultimately on the ice for 2 goals by each team. Earned a secondary assist on Yamamoto’s goal with a good play in the neutral zone to recover the puck and feed it to Draisaitl. Pumped 5 shots on net to lead the Oilers, including a great look on a second-period breakaway but couldn’t solve Reimer. But he did just that in overtime, finishing the deal with a one-timer off a superb RNH feed. Recorded the Oilers’ first shot with a good effort from the high slot, but that was his one and only on the night. Was one of those burned on the 4-3 when he was unable to shut down Nick Bonino’s quick shot from the slot, but that was his only involvement in Grade A shots at either end.

OILERS NOTES: Ben Stelter lights up everybody's life as biggest fan ... (Edmonton Sun)

Stelter, who was the Scotiabank Skater standing with captain Connor McDavid and the Oilers for the anthems March 24, had his first practice with the team ...

The fact that Philip’s such a good skater helps,” said Dave Manson, who looks after the Oilers D. But not until the AHL Condors are eliminated from the playoffs, or somebody gets hurt up here. “I like the versatility to use either one at that position. “Nice to see Darnell in person today. Darnell Nurse, who missed the two road games in Columbus and Pittsburgh, didn’t put on his gear Thursday, either with his teammates or by himself for a little whirl around Rogers Place as he nurses a right leg issue. “For most guys it’s a little dose of reality to realize there are bigger things out there than hockey.
