There isn't much left on what to say about this series, other than the Golden State Warriors just have to execute and get the job done. Now leading 97-94, Curry drove through the paint and around Jokić to finish a left-handed layup to return Golden State’s lead to two-possessions. The Warriors were fighting to send Denver home for good. Jokić picked up his fourth foul roughly halfway through the third quarter, and went to the bench for the final minutes of the frame. The Nuggets were fighting to keep their season alive. Their shots were not falling from the outside, and while they had some success getting to the free-throw line, they struggled to convert. Without explosions from Curry, Jordan Poole, or Klay Thompson, the Warriors struggled to hold their lead.

How to stream Warriors vs. Nuggets - Game 5 (Golden State of Mind)

The Golden State Warriors will play against the Denver Nuggets tonight for Game 5 of the series at 7pm PT in San Francisco.

While everyone is concerned about who will he replace, let’s focus on the two things that are clear: (1) Curry’s return to the starting lineup should spark the entire team and the home crowd, and (2) the closing lineup will still be the Warriors’ “yet to be named” death lineup. With a 3-1 lead, the Golden State Warriors will attempt to finish their first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets during tonight’s Game 5 matchup. Draymond Green admitted that Denver center Nikola Jokic got the best of him in Game 4, and it also didn’t help that Green fouled out in the closing minutes of the game.

Packing up the Nuggets and securing a weekend of rest will do wonders for an aging team that has the task of playing a younger squad in the next round. This has been especially useful given Curry’s recent minutes’ restriction which has now come to an end after weeks of nurturing an ankle injury. The group has only played 32 minutes together in the playoffs.

These Awesome New Warriors Are Catharsis for the Whole NBA (Slate Magazine)

They're real contenders—and seem to be shedding baggage from the past decade's biggest basketball story.

The Warriors, in fact, fit this perfectly, with three stars who’ve each been with the team for their whole careers and whom it’s nearly impossible to imagine in any other jersey. If the Warriors win a championship this year—and they absolutely can—it would be one of the most remarkable displays of resilient continuity in recent sports history, not unlike the San Antonio Spurs’ 2014 run to the title, which, incidentally, was the last championship before the ascendance of the Warriors dynasty. Meanwhile, the legacies of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green—iron-clad Hall of Famers one and all—are still stalked by questions about how many rings they would (or wouldn’t) have won if Durant had never come to the Bay. Durant’s signing with Golden State was immensely polarizing at the time, with fans split between those defending Durant’s right to basketball autonomy and those who saw his defection to Golden State—the team that had only recently dispatched his Thunder from the Western Conference Finals—as a Rubicon-crossing moment for craven ring-chasing. The third-seeded Golden State Warriors look to send off the injury-ravaged Denver Nuggets in five games later Wednesday night, and it brings me no small amount of pleasure to report that the Warriors look like the Warriors again—specifically this era’s first, cool Warriors. The last time we saw a version of the Warriors that resembled this current configuration was spring of 2016, six very long years ago, when they were making an ill-fated but wildly entertaining run to defend their 2015 title against the Cleveland Cavaliers after winning a league-record 73 games in the regular season. This Warriors team obviously isn’t identical to the 2015 and 2016 gangs.

The Warriors have advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs after rallying to beat the Nuggets in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

That unit was a plus-26 through the first four games and started together in Game 5. Curry re-entered the starting lineup in the deciding fifth game, with Kevon Looney moving to the bench. He was healthy for the playoffs and so was Steph Curry, who returned for Game 1 and turned himself into the greatest Sixth Man in NBA history, coming off the bench in the first four games as Jordan Poole thrived in the starting lineup.

Player of the Game pic.twitter.com/1W3qUMMAGE April 28, 2022 It help the Warriors clamp down defensively against a rampaging Jokic. Payton hit some of the biggest shots of his career. Once again, Denver kept pace in the non-Jokic minutes. The last four seasons have not been kind to DeMarcus Cousins. In that span, he has somehow managed to play for the Curry-era Warriors, LeBron James Lakers, James Harden Rockets, Kawhi Leonard Clippers, Giannis Antetokounmpo Bucks and Jokic Nuggets … without ever winning a championship. But if these teams meet again next season, with Murray and Porter back in the fold and perhaps a few upgrades scattered among the rest of the roster, don't be surprised if the result is different. He left the game with a hamstring injury. Michael Malone's Nuggets have had success in the past in elimination games and even overcoming 3-1 series holes. Stephen Curry finished with a team-high 30 points, while Gary Payton II came up big in the fourth quarter.

Steph Curry outshone Nikola Jokic late in Warriors' 102-98 win (Golden State of Mind)

OK, that last one could have happened after about 15 different series wins. But three years later, Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson won their 20th ...

If Memphis can eliminate Minnesota on Friday night, the Warriors will play the Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon, a quick turnaround for the Grizz. If the series goes seven, then Game One of the second round isn’t until Tuesday, and if the Timberwolves pull the unlikely upset, they’d actually start at home. They also didn’t have to deal with Game Four terror Austin Rivers, who injured his hamstring after just five minutes of play, and left the game for good. That sent the Joker to the bench, a huge reason he played only 32 minutes. It was a short bench with Iguodala out, as Kerr played only nine guys, and one them was a five-minute guest spot from Jonathan Kuminga, where had four points, all at the rim. Green had 11 points and six assists, plus a three, and he finished the first round with a very respectable 4-11 shooting mark from deep. It looked like the Warriors were about to make like a group of stoners buying chicken at McDonald’s and overwhelm the Nuggets, but Boogie Cousins stepped up. This time Otto Porter was the victim, and we can only assume he flipped his bat celebrating his three-pointer earlier. After so many injury-prone years, including a torn ACL and an Achilles, Boogie returned to peak form at the worst possible time for the Warriors. Kerr praised him after the game, and many Warriors hugged him, which should spark two months of rumors about him coming back to the Dubs next season. With two Nuggets stalking Curry, Otto Porter Junior hit a wide-open Payton, and he calmly made like Willie Wilson in the 80s, and hit the triple. After the Warriors forced a shot clock violation, Aaron Gordon came out to overplay Curry, and Curry acted like Jokic this whole series, by putting Gordon on his back. He really didn’t look like he was open for any of the three, but that’s the magic of Curry. He had 12 points in the final four minutes, cementing his place as the Warriors’ scariest playoff opponent since LeBron James. So Steph Curry had to whip out one final piece of magic.

Warriors prove they can win ugly in ousting of Nuggets, a crucial ... (CBSSports.com)

As the Warriors advance, they're going to have to continue to find ways to win without their A game.

The game wasn't pretty, but when it came down to crunch time, Curry took what the defense was giving him and found a way to help his team win. He didn't make a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, but he went 5 for 6 from the free throw line and made two clutch layups in the final 1:33 of the game, the second of which essentially sealed the win. Golden State hadn't really needed to do so through the first four games of the series because their offense was producing so well, but they certainly needed the defense to step up in order to close out the Nuggets in Game 5. "It was definitely a big talking point in the huddle was to play great defense." The ability to put the clamps on defensively helped save the Warriors on Wednesday, and it's a calling card of virtually every true championship contender in NBA history. From there it was up to Curry, the team's closer on a night where Thompson and Poole both struggled to knock down shots. I guess when you've bounced around like he has -- been in the G League, played on 10-day contracts, never really found a home -- there's a lot more pressure in that than there is playing in a high-stakes game," Kerr said on Wednesday. "He's found a home here. In the end, however, the Warriors looked up at the scoreboard and found themselves advancing to the second round of the playoffs after 102-98 slugfest. First the defense, which gifted the Nuggets 20 free throw attempts in the first half, compared to just seven for the Warriors. Nikola Jokic was simply outstanding, as usual, with 30 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists ( Draymond Green told the reigning MVP, "thank you for making me better" after the game), but the foul parade wasn't exclusive to him. "It's been three years since we've been in the playoffs, and you kind of forget how difficult closeout games really are," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after the game. The energy seemed off from the jump in Game 5 against the Denver Nuggets, with the Chase Center fans a bit too placid for the players' liking, being asked multiple times to increase the intensity of their cheering and affection. The three-guard lineup consisting of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole started for the first time, but didn't exactly resemble the mythical three-headed beast, Cerberus, to which Nuggets coach Michael Malone compared it earlier in the series.

3 Things We Learned About Warriors From First-Round Victory Over ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Golden State Warriors defeated the Denver Nuggets 4-1 in the first-round of the Western Conference playoffs. Here is what we learned about the Warriors ...

In Game 5, it was Gary Payton II’s 15 points in 26 minutes that gave the Warriors the series victory. Memphis ranked seventh in free-throws attempted per game this season and Minnesota ranked eighth. The 22-year-old guard also made a total of 19 three-pointers in this first-round series. Andrew Wiggins was one of those guys, becoming a first-time All-Star, but Jordan Poole has been a revelation for Golden State. Maybe we already knew this from the regular season, but the Warriors have some of the best depth in the league and it showed in this first-round series against Denver. A team already having two of the best shooters of all-time in Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have received a massive addition in Jordan Poole and if this series taught us anything, it is that Poole is the key to the Warriors winning another title.
