Kreider has worked closely with the Garden of Dreams and Hockey Fights Cancer during his decade as a Ranger. Kreider, who has 52 goals this season, also won the Steven McDonald ``Extra Effort'' Award on Tuesday night. The Rangers trailed 2-1 after two periods before Vatrano tied it at 4:15 of the third. Reaves tied it at 4:14 of the second with his fifth of the season. Strome tied the contest for the third time with a short-handed goal with 3:19 remaining, his 21st of the season and the eighth short-handed score by the Rangers this season. Poehling opened the scoring with 1:15 remaining in the first with his ninth goal of the season. Petry scored his sixth of the season with 31 seconds remaining to put Montreal ahead for the fourth time and forge a victory for Martin St. Louis, the former Ranger who took over behind the Canadiens' bench in early February coaching for the first time at Madison Square Garden.

Rangers rest stars in loss to lowly Canadiens (New York Post)

A skeleton of the Rangers usual lineup accepted a 4-3 loss to the reeling Canadiens, who snapped a nine-game losing streak.

The players who are most likely to get a breather after competing Wednesday night include Ryan Strome, Barclay Goodrow, Frank Vatrano and Ryan Reaves. “We wanted to snap the losing streak, but obviously fell short. Libor Hajek skated in just his 17th game of the season and first since March 12. The guys care about Monday coming up, or Tuesday coming up. “The guys don’t care about that. “Nobody got hurt, that was a key thing tonight,” head coach Gerard Gallant said after the Rangers’ third straight loss in regulation, which hadn’t happened previously this season.

The final ten minutes saw the Rangers squander their third man advantage of the night as they never threatened Montembeault on the sequence. With 15:45 to play, the Habs were buzzing in the offensive zone. He made that one impressive pass in the first period to set up Poehling’s goal. He put everyone to sleep before firing on net and beating Georgiev with only eight seconds to play as the Habs re-established their lead before the third. The third period started with the Rangers attacking and the Canadiens battling to keep them to the perimeter. The second period started with the Canadiens skating and generating some momentum with Caufield getting the best chance early in the period. It made for a very sloppy game, but one that got interesting in the third period as the Canadiens were finally able to win their first game after ten losses, failing to automatically secure the 32nd spot in the league in the process. Play picked up in the final three minutes as the Rangers started hitting; K’Andre Miller completed an excellent back-check on Rem Pitlick before Evans redirected a puck toward Montembeault that forced a good save. The game started with tentative hockey as only two shots were released in the first five minutes of play. Montembeault made a few good stops, but it was mostly two teams seemingly more interested in running out the clock than completing hockey plays. Wednesday night’s contest for the Habs was the last road game of the season as their year wraps up on Friday night. The Rangers got some zone time but never really threatened Montembeault.

The Canadiens play their second-last game of the season against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

They beat the Habs 3-1 in the season opener at the Bell Centre on October 16, and 3-2 exactly one month later in New York. New York fell 4-3 to Carolina, which has a six-point lead over the Rangers and currently leads the Metropolitan Division. The Habs were defeated 5-3 in that game at the hands of the Boston Bruins, who took a 4-1 lead into the third period before Mike Hoffman and Nick Suzuki brought the Canadiens to within one.

New York Rangers face the Montreal Canadiens and you can expect a lot of extras to suit up.

“I thought it was a big plus for him to fight and get back from a long year of dealing with his injury,” Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis said. “I’m on the cautious side,” Gallant said. New York lost to the Hurricanes in a qualifying round series in the summer of 2020, when the postseason consisted of 24 teams following the pandemic-shortened regular season. Gallant began taking the long view Tuesday, when second-ling wingers Artemi Panarin and Andrew Copp each suffered injuries in the second period. “Wherever you’re going to finish, you’re playing a great team,” Gallant said. “Yeah, over the last couple of weeks, we had a chance at first.

Montreal Canadiens Not Getting Help From Rangers in Bid for Last ... (A Winning Habit)

The Montreal Canadiens are not getting any help tonight from the New York Rangers in their quest for the best draft lottery odds.

It is far from a guarantee for anyone to get the top pick, but with the Canadiens this close to getting the best odds, you kind of have to hope for it at this point. They are sitting half a dozen of their best players to get rest. Again, shouldn’t be franchise altering stuff, but if the Habs are going to be this bad for a whole season, you want them to end up with Shane Wright, the best prospect available in the draft.

Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens break losing skid with 4-3 win ... (Globalnews.ca)

The contest meant nothing to the New York Rangers who rested almost half the team, and that helped as the Montreal Canadiens posted a 4-3 win.

Getting a lot less press, but not trailing offensively by much is Riley Kidney. He was the better prospect on draft day as he was taken in the second round. It’s extremely difficult to project who will keep developing to become NHLers, but the Canadiens have two solid chances here. He also is closing in on a 50-goal season with 47. Also, a positive is that Nick Suzuki hit the 60-point plateau in the contest. The Sherbrooke Phoenix Joshua Roy has been getting all of the press, and for good reason. That’s the consolation prize on a most difficult season.

Canadiens have best shot at the first draft pick, but the evolution of ... (The Athletic)

The Canadiens want what the Rangers have, but a high draft pick will not be enough to get there. Their core players need to evolve, as well.

As a coach, I think you’re a facilitator in that sense, but it’s the player that has that responsibility to go and apply it.” The Canadiens will need certain veterans to adapt and evolve into more productive versions of themselves next season. No, neither Gallagher, Anderson nor Evans is likely to become a 50-goal scorer, but if they can adapt their games to become more consistent contributors, the Canadiens will be the big beneficiaries. Actually, it’s an art to be able to absorb and apply, and I think that’s on the player. And if there is one player on the Canadiens who is most similar to Kreider in terms of playing style and size, it is Anderson. And so will Jake Evans, who once said in Laval that he saw himself as a fourth-line checking centre in the NHL but acknowledged Wednesday he now sees himself as potentially more than that. “But at the end of the day, it’s the players. “Maybe they see somebody do something they weren’t doing before, is it the coach’s fault that the player’s doing X, Y and Z?” St. Louis said. He and Kreider were seen at the time as very similar players with similar numbers and similar impact. But not everyone can do that at the same level. It was only when things got so bad that it was clearly becoming damaging — five straight regulation losses in which the Canadiens gave up 33 goals and scored 12 — did Gorton and Hughes step in, firing Ducharme and hiring Martin St. Louis, just about the most outside-the-box hire they could have made. By that point the Canadiens were 8-30-7, and what was finally confirmed Wednesday night had seemed somewhat inevitable.

Rangers skeleton crew fall 4-3 to the Canadiens - Forever Blueshirts ... (Forever Blueshirts)

The New York Rangers lineup was missing its biggest stars and they eventually lost to the Canadiens 4-3.

Christian Dvorak grabbed a loose puck and fed Petry coming down the right side. Missed passes, reaching, and a flopping Barclay Goodrow could not get the puck out of the zone. Frank Vatrano, flying down the left side snapped a wicked shot over the glove of Sam Montembeault to tie it at 2 apiece. With the team locked into second place, head coach Gerard Gallant played it cautious and rested a majority of his star players. Patrik Nemeth and Rooney picked up the helpers. The Rangers didn’t lack intensity in this one but they certainly lacked execution.
