Lowetide: Why Oilers star Leon Draisaitl's value peaks in the playoffs (The Athletic)

Game 7 on May 10 in Anaheim was a loss, and the final time Lucic-Draisaitl-Slepyshev would see the light of day in a playoff game. The following year, the three ...

This should get interesting in a hurry once the regular season ends. Down the stretch this season, the Oilers featured Draisaitl as the only big man (McDavid, Nuge, Ryan McLeod the other options) but the additions of Zach Hyman, Evander Kane and Warren Foegele on left wing have changed the look of the top three lines. On the other hand, the heavier men (Draisaitl, Patrick Maroon and Slepyshev among them) scored better than the smaller players. McDavid fell from 2.87 points per 60 to 0.56, while Eberle was 1.75 in the regular season (0.38 postseason) and Nugent-Hopkins didn’t post a playoff point at five-on-five after scoring 1.50 points per 60 during the regular season (all via Natural Stat Trick). It’s a stretch to call McDavid undersized, but he was inexperienced in playoff hockey in 2017. 6.02 In looking back to the 2017 playoffs, former Oilers winger Jordan Eberle was a similar player type and struggled during the postseason. While penalty killing, Draisaitl works hard and is most effective in five-on-three play. On the power play, the numbers are incredible: 4.76 goals per 60, 8.14 points per 60, and that’s in 302 minutes work. His shooting percentage at five-on-five (17.7 percent) is borderline impossible, but his career shooting percentage in all disciplines is an exact match. The following year, the three men spent less than 15 minutes on the ice together in all game states. On this night in Edmonton, the trio clicked behind the herculean efforts of its centre (Draisaitl), who would score twice in the first eight minutes and add a third goal late in the second period in a convincing 7-1 win for the Oilers.

Ron Cook: Connor McDavid, Oilers skate circles around Penguins (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Is it possible the Penguins could dress Andy Saucier for their playoff games? Clearly, Saucier is the best thing the team has going these days.

The Penguins are running out of time to get things right. Crosby, meanwhile, wasn’t a factor, just as he wasn’t in that December game against the Oilers when he was a minus-4. They are a stinking mess at the moment. McDavid put on a sensational show with a goal and three assists, the same production he had in the Oilers’ 5-2 win against the Penguins in Edmonton in December. He has 44 goals and an NHL-best 122 points. The most frustrating part of the game came when Kane needed just 25 seconds to answer Carter’s goal and put the Oilers back on top, 2-1, early in the second period. No matter how bad Zucker’s injury is, it can’t be any more severe than the blow to the Penguins’ collective ego. We’ve got to draw on that experience right now, more than ever.” If you get too tight to him, he can beat you with wide speed. Really, no one in the NHL is. He skated around Evan Rodrigues and Carter and beat DeSmith with an amazing shot from a ridiculous angle to DeSmith’s right. The result against the Oilers went well beyond disappointing. Mike Sullivan is now 7 for 7 on a coach’s challenge this season, thanks to Saucier’s work.

In his absence, Brett Kulak was moved up to the team’s top defensive pairing alongside Cody Ceci. The duo logged 17:49 at even-strength and held the Penguins to just one high-danger scoring chance while going 21-for-17 in terms of shot attempts. The Vegas Golden Knights lost in a shootout to the Dallas Stars and can no longer catch Los Angeles in the standings, so that means the Kings are going to be Edmonton’s opponent in the first round. His save percentage on the season is up to .915. “That’s what the best players in the world do. The team got goals from five different players, the defence was able to completely shut down Sidney Crosby’s line, and Mike Smith stopped 33 of 34 shots in his return to the net. He picked up assists on goals scored by Evan Bouchard, Evander Kane, and Zach Hyman, and then sniped a gorgeous goal of his own for good measure.

He’s playing the game the right way. It’s been impressive to watch.” “Connor has been driving the bus,” he said. Many of his teammates are having career years. Well, he made the playoffs and has been making a lineup of teammates better in doing so throughout the season. The team returned to Edmonton for their final two games of the regular season where they have a 13-game point streak. And without a doubt, that will do it. Hyman and Bouchard were not the story. The Oilers sent Zach Hyman and Evan Bouchard out instead. A night where McDavid made it almost impossible to not be considered the story, the whole story and nothing but the story.
