The wall-crawler has yet to appear in any of Sony’s villain films except for a small moment in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s” post-credits scene, but with so many Spider-Men around in live-action after “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” never say never. Morales is half Puerto Rican (via his mother) in the comics and in the film. But there is no bigger Latino star in any medium than Bad Bunny, who has been Spotify’s most streamed artist in the world the last two years, while performing exclusively in Spanish. If Santo Benito wants to play your Mexican superhero on film, you don’t say no, and playing a Mexican icon did wonders for another Puerto Rican actor-musician: J-Lo (see “Selena”). So maybe lightning will strike twice.

This marks the first time a Latino will lead a Marvel movie—and the first live-action Marvel flick about a Latino hero.

El Muerto isn’t a well-known hero within the Marvel universe, but then again, it’s not like Morbius was widely known, either. This is a historic moment, as Martínez Ocasio is set to become the first Latino to lead a Marvel movie. He was first introduced in the comics on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Vol. 1 #6, where he faces off in the ring against Spider-Man for a charity match.

Bad Bunny is set to star in Sony Pictures' El Muerto, the studio announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 25. The Puerto Rican musician, 28, also acts alongside Brad Pitt in David Leitch's new thriller Bullet Train, which premieres July 29. While this is the first leading film role for Bad Bunny, otherwise known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, this isn't his first time he's appeared on the big screen.

The biggest generational gap for the el Muerto powers came when Marcus Estrada brought his son Juan Carlos to el Dorado who wasn't ready. But that didn't happen, right as el Muerto was about to rip Spider-Man's mask off, Spider-Man stunk him with a poison. But why el Muerto? Basically, El Muerto will arrive on Netflix after the paid video-on-demand window, and then hit Disney Plus after that. This film is apparently been in a somewhat-rushed development, as Bad Bunny had told Sony that he really wanted to find the right comic book character for himself. El Muerto will be the latest moniker for the man they call Bad Bunny. Yes, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (aka San Benito) is getting his own slice of the comic book movie world, in a Sony Pictures film based on the Marvel character.

Sony's newest project from its Spider-Man universe is El Muerto, centered on the villain of the same name – but who is he and what are his powers?

Sony is already a couple of steps ahead in its plans of bringing El Muerto to the big screen and his already found its lead in Bad Bunny. The Puerto Rican rapper, singer, actor, and professional wrestler was announced as the star of El Muerto during Sony’s panel at CinemaCon in April 2022, making him the first Latino lead in a Marvel movie. The powers that the El Muerto mask grants to its wearer are superhuman strength and superhuman endurance, along with enhanced speed. Sony announced the project at Cinema Con but didn’t provide details beyond Bad Bunny being cast as Juan Carlos, but as the plan is for it to be released in theaters on January 12, 2024, it should go into production in late 2022/early 2023, so it shouldn't be long until more details are revealed. As El Muerto was about to unmask Spider-Man, the web-slinger inadvertently poisoned him with a stinger that accidentally sprung from his wrist. As part of the “ritual” of passing down the mantle of El Muerto, each wrestler has to prove themselves in a match against their oppressor, El Dorado, in order to remain alive and keep their powers. Marvel continues dominating the big screen with its two connected yet separate universes: the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, linked through Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

Sony Pictures has announced that its next Marvel film will be based on the minor Spider-Man character El Muerto, featuring musician Bad Bunny in the role.

Sony announced Bad Bunny will play the super-powered Marvel wrestler El Muerto in the studio's next Spider-Man standalone antihero movie.
