Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known by his stage name Bad Bunny, has been cast as the newest Marvel hero in Sony Pictures' portfolio of the super.
On stage at CinemaCon, Sony brass suggested Ocasio will portray an antihero on the verge of inheriting his father’s power. Upcoming Sony Marvel projects include: the anticipated “Madame Web,” a female-led adventure starring Dakota Johnson, which is due in theaters on July 7, 2023; and the imminent “Kraven the Hunter,” led by “Nocturnal Animals” star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, which hits theaters on January 13, 2023. “El Muerto” is set to hit theaters on Jan. 12, 2024.

Bad Bunny is set to star in Sony Pictures' El Muerto, the studio announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 25. The Puerto Rican musician, 28, also acts alongside Brad Pitt in David Leitch's new thriller Bullet Train, which premieres July 29. While this is the first leading film role for Bad Bunny, otherwise known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, this isn't his first time he's appeared on the big screen.

Sony is already a couple of steps ahead in its plans of bringing El Muerto to the big screen and his already found its lead in Bad Bunny. The Puerto Rican rapper, singer, actor, and professional wrestler was announced as the star of El Muerto during Sony’s panel at CinemaCon in April 2022, making him the first Latino lead in a Marvel movie. The powers that the El Muerto mask grants to its wearer are superhuman strength and superhuman endurance, along with enhanced speed. Sony announced the project at Cinema Con but didn’t provide details beyond Bad Bunny being cast as Juan Carlos, but as the plan is for it to be released in theaters on January 12, 2024, it should go into production in late 2022/early 2023, so it shouldn't be long until more details are revealed. As El Muerto was about to unmask Spider-Man, the web-slinger inadvertently poisoned him with a stinger that accidentally sprung from his wrist. As part of the “ritual” of passing down the mantle of El Muerto, each wrestler has to prove themselves in a match against their oppressor, El Dorado, in order to remain alive and keep their powers. Marvel continues dominating the big screen with its two connected yet separate universes: the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, linked through Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

At the end of that time, Juan-Carlos must don the mask of his forefathers and use its power to defeat and unmask a masked hero. Surprisingly, El Muerto almost bests the superhero in a fair fight and prepares to unmask him. Despite those advantages and the long line of tradition, Juan-Carlos was reluctant to accept the mantle of El Muerto. Against his will, Juan-Carlos was trained for his entire life to bear the magic mask and carry on the family name, but, in the final ritual, he made a decision that would change his life forever.
