The Hobey Baker Award-winning goalie went undrafted.

The second question is going to be: Is he a steal? Is he going to be an NHL starter, and can he play tomorrow? He finished 10th in the NCAA by that measure this season.

EPRinkside thinks he could improve on his edges and add a little bit of strength ($), but in terms of taking a swing on a goalie, there doesn’t seem to be much risk for a player as successful as McKay was at the NCAA level. The one note about McKay worth mentioning is that he was recently suspended for six months by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for testing positive for a banned substance. Over his four-year career, McKay posted a 113-20-4 record with 34 shutouts, a 1.46 GAA, and a save percentage of .932. McKay holds the NCAA record for most career shutouts, having broken Ryan Miller’s record, which stood for two decades. He was named to the All-Rookie team of his conference as a freshman and then was named All-First Team three straight seasons from 2020 through 2022. McKay won a goaltending competition his freshman season, and after snaring the starting role, he never looked back. McKay is a 24-year-old goaltender who has been the most vaunted and storied netminder in NCAA hockey for several years now.

McKay tested positive for a substance called ostarine, an anabolic agent which is prohibited at all times under the USADA’s protocols. The product McKay used was Quercetin, a plant-based antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that some use as an immune-booster or recovery tool for COVID, Friedman reported previously. He was granted a three-day credit for a provisional suspension served from Jan. 31 through Feb. 2, 2022.

It appears the Maple Leafs have won the sweepstakes and signed Hobey Baker winner Dryden McKay to a two-year AHL contract.

This is a great signing for Toronto. McKay did not get a four-year penalty. His save percentage at the conclusion of the 2022 season was a .931. Just nutty. He’d been very careful about looking at the label.” There was likely a number of NHL teams trying to sign one of the best goaltenders available at the college level. ‘Hey, you tested positive, and it’s a four-year ban, potentially.’”
