Exclusive: Video Undercuts DaBaby's Self-Defense Claim in 2018 ... (Rolling Stone)

The controversial rapper shot and killed Jaylin Craig in a Walmart. DaBaby swears he acted in self-defense, but never-before-seen footage raises doubts about ...

If someone acts “as the aggressor and he initiates the conflict, he’s got to be able to show not just that the person was armed, but that there was a serious threat of imminent death or physical injury,” Owens says. However, the case was suddenly dismissed in March 2019 because “a key civilian witness was unavailable,” according to a county representative. At that moment, Kirk is able to break free one of his hands, pulling out a concealed .40-caliber Glock from his waistband and shooting Craig one time in the side at close range. Initially, Craig’s parents believed that Kirk was being investigated in relation to Craig’s death, expecting a charge of homicide against the rapper. At one point, after Kirk and Douglas start fighting, “Craig reaches into the front of his waistband to pull out what appears to be a firearm,” according to Bunting’s report. It was also a shock to them when detectives told them that Craig had been carrying a pistol, even more so when the gun was reported as stolen. In line with Douglas’ account, as he takes a few steps back and slightly turns away, Kirk is seen on surveillance footage unexpectedly launching into Douglas, striking him in the head and nearly tackling him to the ground. Throughout his interview with police, Kirk repeatedly plays up being a loving, protective father, mentioning how he was doting on his daughter, holding up outfits with “hearts and unicorns,” planting kisses on the one-year-old and giving her a lollipop. “They’re staring at me like they recognize me; like they was about to come pull a gun out,” Kirk told detectives, adding that he assumed the teens were looking to cause trouble. While Kirk claimed to police that one of the teens had first suggested they should fight, the footage shows Craig standing nearby as Kirk sucker punches a blindsided Douglas, barreling into him and striking him in the face. At one point immediately after Kirk’s initial attack on Douglas, Craig appears in one block of footage to pull out a gun from his waistband, but as he walks out of frame, he appears to begin to put it back. “We were trying to see who you are, and he took it as somebody is looking at him with a problem.”

Rolling Stone has unearthed footage of the 2018 killing of Jaylin Craig. In 2018, DaBaby (born Jonathan Kirk) shot Craig in a Charlotte, NC Walmart.

The 2018 shooting began, according to Douglas, with Craig and he recognizing DaBaby at the Walmart. A conversation between the two about whether or not it was really the rapper was perceived by Kirk (according to Kirk) as the two stalking him in an attempt to start something. “They’re trying to get me to provoke them so they could pull a gun out,” he told police at the time. Rolling Stone has unearthed footage of the 2018 killing of Jaylin Craig. In 2018, DaBaby (born Jonathan Kirk) shot Craig in a Charlotte, NC Walmart. DaBaby was on the verge of superstardom when he was cleared in the 2018 murder of Jaylin Craig, but new video sheds doubt on self-defense claim.

Leaving a trail of blood as he stumbles away, Craig collapses to the floor at the other end of the aisle. Walmart surveillance footage reviewed by Rolling Stone shows Craig and Douglas rolling through the entrance of the store around 6:30 p.m. local time, laughing. After DaBaby was vindicated, he bragged about the killing numerous times in music, causing further pain for the Craig family. Craig’s mother, LaWanda Horsley, was shocked DaBaby was able to skirt the more serious charge of murder and wind up with probation for carrying a concealed weapon. I’m not doing this for no fame or anything, because at the end of the day, Jaylin Craig is gone.” In the clip, DaBaby reportedly throws the first punch at Craig’s friend Henry Douglas and splits his forehead open, which later requires stitches.

This was due to the fact that prosecutors could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in self-defense." This video shows a fight that got way out of hand very fast, and that resulted in somebody dying." "Going up and pushing a person who is brandishing a firearm, or who she can see has a firearm is really, really risky business," Owens said. Kirk's version of events painted a different picture of the incident. Kirk appears to have started the altercation by charging at Douglas. DaBaby has been involved in another violent altercation, this time with Charlotte rapper Wisdom, whose album was released on DaBaby's label.

DaBaby’s rapper Drew Findling later blasted the lawsuit as “garbage”, issuing a statement to Rolling Stone saying, “It is offensive that this alleged victim threatened and instigated violence and has now used this incident to make a quick money grab. Kirk and Wisdom have also been embroiled in a scandal together before. The pair’s altercation adds to a list of recent controversies involving Kirk. Just last week, a shooting took place at his home in North Carolina, leaving one person injured.

RS suggests this video contradicts DaBaby's self-defense narrative, as he appears to be the aggressor in this situation -- at least based on what they posted. He was with his GF and baby girl in the store. As you know, he's been involved in countless physical altercations over the years. While Rolling Stone appears to be questioning DaBaby's story of protecting himself, others have seen this video and agreed ... he had every right to pull his own gun and fire once Craig pulled his, especially since he wasn't the one directly involved in the fistfight. Craig appears to reach for and even brandish what was later determined to be a gun on his person -- but RS says his grieving family insists he never would've had to resort to grabbing it if not for DB's aggressive behavior setting this whole thing in motion. DaBaby hasn't shied away from this case ... insisting from the jump he was acting in self-defense -- claiming the victim, 19-year-old Jaylin Craig, had pulled a gun ... and he feared for his and his family's life.

The rapper's self defense claim after the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jaylin Craig in 2018 is being challenged by new, never-before-seen footage.

Kirk wasn't prosecuted for Craig’s death on the basis of him acting in self-defense, however, he did face a charge and conviction for carrying around a concealed weapon. This incident is just one of several claims of violence that the rapper has had brought against him in recent years. But the new video, which was published on Sunday night, contradicts the performer's longstanding account of the altercation.
