The Nets' Season Was Doomed From the Start (Sports Illustrated)

Brooklyn had to weather injuries, James Harden's trade request and other setbacks. But Kyrie Irving's decision to not get the vaccine stumbled the team out ...

But as the Nets themselves just demonstrated, talent without coherence or commitment is a road to nowhere. But the Nets are the first superteam to be sabotaged from within, by a star who shunned his team obligations in favor of his own quixotic political crusade. And yet the Nets have little choice but to re-sign him, given his close bond with Durant and their salary-cap limitations. Along the way, the Nets had to weather Durant’s knee injury (and six-week absence), Harden’s indifference and a dozen other setbacks. The Nets opened as a superteam with supreme aspirations, and finished as one of the greatest disappointments in NBA history. That distinction belongs to the Lakers of LeBron James and Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, who couldn’t even make the play-in tournament.

Kyrie Irving, Ben Simmons, Steve Nash and more: The 10 biggest ... (The Athletic)

Does Irving sign a long-term extension? Is Nash back? How does Simmons fit? After being title favorites, the Nets face an uncertain summer.

The Nets have the talent to have a versatile frontcourt, but perhaps not the experience. The Nets’ season was defined by uncertainty and now they head into a crucial offseason in which they’ll look to re-tool to avoid the same fate next season. In Game 4, Dragić finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists as a reserve and was one of Brooklyn’s better players against a Boston defense that rendered the Nets offense useless. The combination of his skill set and size are hard to find in the league. He was Nash’s understudy as a rookie in Phoenix and gave Nash a player who didn’t need to adjust to his new coach. Brooklyn’s roster has obvious flaws, but outside of a trade, the Nets have veteran minimums and the $6.3 million mid-level exception to offer. Simmons hasn’t played since the Eastern Conference semifinals in June 2021, and the Nets will go into next season without any indication of how he fits alongside Irving and Durant. Simmons has three years remaining on his deal and is extension-eligible this summer along with Joe Harris and Seth Curry, but it’s hard to see a discussion about one taking place given his situation. But as far as an organization, we’re really pushing to support Ben in any way we can to help him improve physically and get back on the court, and the mental side of that is part and parcel. We want to help if he needs help in any aspect of his life and his game. Irving has said he plans to re-sign with the Nets and doesn’t want to leave Kevin Durant. But after the circus of a season he had, does Brooklyn want to give Irving the full max? “I liked the way we tried to come together at the end of the season and salvage what was lost with guys who were injured and being traded. Like the previous games in the series, the Nets hung around with the Celtics, but never threatened enough to take the lead.

With Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, competing for a championship will be the only measure that deems any Brooklyn season as satisfactory—especially if Simmons can return to full strength. A decorated former player doesn't exactly need the dramatic trappings of a superteam and all the time away from family that coaching demands. Any front office ousted from the first round, especially for a team that failed to win a single game, has to consider wholesale changes. Nets staffers have further envisioned the added playmaking Simmons could provide both in transition and the half court, either facilitating on the ball or morphing into a devastating pick-and-roll partner for Durant and Irving, like a supersized, better-passing Bruce Brown. Boston's defensive scheme grinded Brooklyn's once-high-octane offense to a halt, and the Nets struggled to get into much half-court action before much of the shot clock had already disappeared. There's been no indication that Durant's opinion on Nash has changed, and he first bristled when asked about his faith in the coach on Monday night. Similar patterns of uncompetitive behavior date back to Simmons' collegiate days at LSU, when draft evaluators wondered if he was a better bet than Brandon Ingram for the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NBA draft. After visiting the floor for pregame warm-ups prior to Game 3, Simmons did not partake in any pregame work Monday and was not present on the bench alongside his teammates for Game 4, which one source told B/R was because of his lingering back discomfort. Simmons certainly wouldn't have debuted on the road in front of a hostile Boston crowd for Game 5. Instead, the Nets ruled Simmons out of Game 4 altogether, sources said, as a sense of fatigue from the situation and general disappointment seemed to permeate the franchise. But Simmons was still resistant, sources told B/R, and seemed dead set on sitting the remainder of the season if Philadelphia hadn't moved him before the deadline. There had been various people close to him encouraging him to retake the floor, even under limited minutes, to establish a deeper connection with teammates ahead of next season, sources said. Tuesday morning, Brooklyn woke as the only playoff team swept out of the first round.

And while he admitted the team did get a bunch of calls about a possible swap, Lynch said he can’t envision the team actually pulling the trigger to move Samuel. San Francisco 49ers GM acknowledges Deebo Samuel trade request “I can’t ever imagine wanting to move on from Deebo. You put yourself through the exercises of, even though we don’t have a first-round pick, you have to be thorough in this process and prepare for everything,” Lynch said [h/t ESPN]. “So, you go through it and do that. In just a matter of weeks, Samuel went from being a player on the 49ers offense with superstar potential and a year away from free agency to a disgruntled athlete unhappy with his current situation and wanting out of San Francisco. While rumblings of his happiness had reverberated from social media earlier this month, it wasn’t until he reportedly told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington last week that he officially requested a trade that things became real. On Monday, the San Francisco 49ers GM took part in a 30-minute media scrum in the lead-up to Thursday’s NFL Draft and was asked about the situation with the All-Pro wideout. The Mexico native had been set to play the 2022 season with the Toros de Tijuana in his home country before signing with Arizona. At the time, Pérez announced that this year with the Toros would be his final in professional baseball. The D-Backs have a week to trade Pérez or place him on waivers, and it remains to be seen whether the 40-year-old will look to continue his MLB career. The league and union agreed to expand active rosters by a pair of players for the season’s first couple weeks this year. "So those that run to and not from competition, those that embrace competition and the intensity of it, and the anxiety maybe associated with it — I think they have a leg up. No, but it was the final home game, and Getzlaf, 36, decided to make it the final game of his career and sit out the Ducks’ remaining road games. The look here for Desmond Bane is to bet his under for his Rebounds + Assists. The line is set at 8.5, which feels strange considering he hasn't gone over that total in any of the eight games against Minnesota this season. The series is heading to a potential clinching Game 5 for the Heat, and if Young and the Hawks want to extend their postseason stay, it falls on their star's shoulders. There's no doubt that he's a fantastic player on the court, but if there are still health issues to sort out then he has to deal with that and get fully healthy. He is a 3-time All-Star that impacts the game on many levels, and offensively, he can finish well at the rim.

He made all of the necessary progressions in rehab and showed optimism about joining the team on the floor. “He’s been having to deal with so much stuff as a head coach for the first time. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry suffered a sprained ligament and bone bruise in his foot in mid-March and returned for Game 1 of the playoffs. “I think that he has to be all in, so that is part of the question. For Nets players, the confusion was not centered around Simmons’ ailment, but with the perceived lack of attempt to play, effort to be in uniform and push his body in these high-stakes playoffs, sources said. Around Christmas Day, the Nets found themselves competing for first place in the Eastern Conference, despite deciding in October to hold Irving out due to New York City’s vaccine mandate, which made for a chaotic training camp. The fallout of Simmons being ruled out Sunday led to a meeting among franchise officials, Simmons and his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, on Monday in Brooklyn. According to sources, Simmons told those in the room that a mental block exists for him, dating in part to last summer’s postseason, which is creating stress that could serve as a trigger point for his back issues. “I said it recently that part of the decision has to be Ben’s,” Nash said. With the Nets facing elimination on Monday in Game 4 against the Celtics, Simmons pulled himself from his expected season debut, with sources saying he informed team officials on Sunday that his back felt sore. Simmons – a two-time first-team All-Defensive player and one-time All-NBA team member – possesses special gifts on the floor, most notably his playmaking, defense and rebounding abilities. Nash also revealed at that time that Simmons had an MRI weeks earlier that confirmed the back injury. Both sides are expected to stay in communication and continue to work toward Simmons, who has three years and $114 million remaining on his contract, feeling ready to play again.
