Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Washington Capitals - Game #80 Preview ... (Maple Leafs Hot Stove)

With a much better effort than in Tampa Bay, the Maple Leafs grabbed a point but fell 3-2 in overtime against the Florida Panthers last night.

They played on their half of the ice a lot. He finds them in the slot; he finds them in the house. They had the puck a lot. Those guys haven’t played together a lot other than the odd shift here and there. The Capitals will give the nod to Vanacek, who has won his last three starts, including a 19-save shutout against the Coyotes on Friday night. We don’t like the way the last game went. John Carlson scored halfway through the second to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Leafs answered just 13 seconds later to reclaim a multi-goal lead and then scored 18 seconds after that to push the game out of reach. It’s the only one on the road trip that stunk. With a much better effort than in Tampa Bay, the Maple Leafs grabbed a point but fell 3-2 in overtime against the Florida Panthers last night. We know one of Jason Spezza or Nick Abruzzese will have to draw back in, presumably on the fourth line. Unfortunately, he failed to find the back of the net, which means the hunt for 60 goals is coming down to the wire. Washington managed to climb their way back into the game after swapping out Ilya Samsonov for Vitek Vanecek in goal, but Rasmus Sandin pushed the Leafs over the top in the dying minutes of the third.

Maple Leafs vs Capitals Picks and Predictions: Washington Picks ... (Covers.com)

NHL odds, picks and predictions for Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals on April 24. NHL betting free picks for moneyline and Over/Under.

Although the total is available at 7 on most books, you can find a 6.5 if you're willing to pay a little extra. This isn't exactly two perennial puck stoppers going toe-to-toe, with neither player having a SV% above .910. Vanecek's last 10 starts have also gone 6-4 to the Over and Kallgren has surrendered 18 goals over his last four starts. If you sit back, take a look, and think about it for less than two seconds, you'll think Over 7 is absolutely the right play here. The Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between each side and both teams have played well above .500 to the Over on the season. Although both teams have struggled offensively recently, I expect each of them to ramp up their lamp lighting to at least some degree. Although the matchups between both sides have been fairly even overall, Toronto is just 4-11 SU in the last 15 matchups in Washington. Vanecek is expected to get the call against the Leafs tonight after coming off a 19-save shutout against the bottom-feeding Coyotes Friday night. Vanecek has faced Toronto twice this season and has given up four goals on just 30 shots against the scorching offense. That may lead some to believe they're due for a breakthrough with the Hart Trophy betting favorite Auston Matthews still chasing 60, but I'm not buying into it. The once scorching-hot offense has also been kept at bay recently, amassing only three goals over its last two games. Washington opened this game as a -106 favorite but has been bet up to -120. To no surprise, the total opened up at 7 and remains there as of Sunday morning.

To have the Lightning overtake the Leafs they need to get six more points in their four games than the Leafs get in three games. Is that kind of points swing in the last week of the season probable? Tonight the Leafs face the Capitals, a team that can theoretically move up from the second wildcard spot to the first.

An unsuccessful power play in OT cost the Capitals after the Maple Leafs were called for too many men on the ice. Maple Leafs captain John Tavares and defenseman Timothy Liljegren got the night off for rest. “It’s better it happened now than in a week, but it’s a frustrating loss,” said Marcus Johansson, who scored his third goal since rejoining the Capitals at the trade deadline. Alex Ovechkin was injured early in the third period of a 4-3 shootout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday night, crashing into the boards and getting ruled out with an upper-body injury. They left with just a point after Toronto’s Alex Kerfoot scored to end the seven-round shootout. But Ovechkin went right down the tunnel this time and did not return.

John Tavares sat this game out as a maintenance day. The Leafs come out hard, try to get the first goal early and have some good defensive moves early on.

After a save that stops play, Rielly dumps it out, killing a few easy seconds of the man advantage for Washington. No goal. Rielly loses his stick, but it gets in the way of the pass so the Caps can’t take advantage.
