I'm tired of talking about Pascal Siakam. Aren't you? - Raptors ... (Raptors Republic)

There was the early explosion after Kawhi Leonard left, scoring 28 points a game for Toronto's first eight games in 2019-20, shooting over 40 percent from deep.

He is fantastic on or off the ball, as a defender, as a rebounder, in all sorts of situations playing all sorts of positions. He’s been growing in stasis, always in a “prove it in the playoffs” mode no matter what he does in the regular season. (I maintain that the Raptors would have won the championship in 2019-20 if they’d beaten the Boston Celtics, and especially if the pandemic had never happened, but that’s unprovable, so I digress.) Instead, the Raptors are on the verge of getting swept by a Philadelphia team that has outclassed the Raptors in many expected ways and plenty of unexpected ones, besides. He wanted the team to be his. If there’s one dart that has in fact found its mark, it’s that Siakam has not raised his level of play in the playoffs without Leonard alongside him drawing the defense’s attention. But for a long time now, very little has changed in the conversation even as the subject has shifted his own status. Later in the season, he made the conversation about himself in the best way possible. He started in the All-Star Game. He tailed off as a result of the pandemic, which has been well covered, yet he was still voted to the All-NBA Second Team. Then came the bubble and a disastrous playoff performance followed by a down (but still actually quite good for Siakam himself, if not for the Raptors) 2020-21 campaign that ended in injury. By the time he came back from the torn labrum this season, few had the patience to wait for him to return to form as he averaged 14.4 points a game in his first five. The Raptors could have won Game 3. And then how many of those teams would kill for a running mate — who’s already proven he can win a championship as a sidekick — who’s an elite two-way force who plays perfectly alongside the star and who is already on the roster? All of that is utter and tired nonsense claimed by typists who are fans more of trade machines than NBA teams, cutting their fandom teeth in MyLeague rather than #ThisLeague. How many teams would kill for Barnes as their future superstar?

NBA Playoff Pick 'Em: Raptors on the brink and what's up with KD? (Sportsnet.ca)

Given the trend line of this series, it feels more likely that the Philadelphia 76ers win running away than the Toronto Raptors win or keep it close.

Game 3 was such a backbreaker for the Timberwolves and the Grizzlies have displayed such killer instinct all year, this one seems like a gimme. And with the most recent reports as of filing indicating the Mavs are “optimistic” about Doncic’s return for Game 4 ... well if the books want to give me points, I’m here for it. I mean, just trade everyone and start over at this point if you’re Danny Ainge and the Utah Jazz brass. Plus, he’s topped 29 points in just under half of his games played this year. But the Nets were just 5-27-1 against the spread as home favourites this season, which terrifies me. Boston has looked like a title contender and a team with room for improvement. This series is in a very weird place from a betting perspective. The Utah Jazz are in utter disarray after dropping two straight to go down 2-1 against a Luka Doncic-less Dallas Mavericks team that everyone wrote off when the Slovenian injured his calf in the Game 82 of the season. Plus, Embiid may or may not have a torn ligament in the thumb on his shooting hand. The Raptors were +12 in the turnover battle. It’s the kind of game that breaks your spirit. The big Cameroonian will probably finish behind Denver’s Nikola Jokic for MVP, but you’d never believe that from this series.

76ers superstar Joel Embiid told Drake that he was gunning for a sweep of the Toronto Raptors after Philadelphia's Game 3 win.

While the Raptors were giving Embiid free passes to the foul line in Game 3, he showed that he can be a game-changing force in this series without living at the line. Based on what we’ve seen so far, the 76ers are in a much better position to advance. Time will tell if his intuition was proven correct of the Raptors can live to fight another day.

His 15 point fourth quarter blew the game open for the Raptors as the 76ers struggled for any way to slow down the potential All-NBA forward. VanVleet seemed a little off in the second quarter, passing up an open three-point attempt to find Trent for a trio. Then, in the fourth quarter, he took over for Toronto, scoring six straight points to open the quarter and sticking the Raptors to a seven-point lead early in the quarter from which they never looked back. There's no hiding from the disaster that was Game 3 for Siakam who didn't register a single point in the second half Wednesday night, but what's clear is he's learning from his mistakes. Barnes didn't get the start Saturday afternoon as Nurse opted to go with Khem Birch against Joel Embiid, his impact was certainly felt off the bench. Trent scored seven of his points in the second half, and had two steals. Earlier in the series, he had been criticized for not taking enough shots, nor being sufficiently assertive and decisive. Siakam continued to put points on the board – 15 of them in the fourth quarter alone. Embiid was held without a field goal in the first quarter. The news was delivered via a video message from Vince Carter and Damon Stoudamire – the only other Raptors in history to win the award. Barnes had been vocal all year that the award was his goal. He had five points and three assists on 2-of-6 shooting when he left after 15 minutes. When it was clear what Carter was saying to them, the other Raptors crowded around Barnes excitedly to embrace the 20-year-old rookie. The Raps were beat badly in the first two games in Philadelphia, then suffered a three-point overtime loss in Game 3 after leading nearly all night. Barnes’s return benefitted the Raptors in many ways. The Raptors have survived to play another day. Pascal Siakam provided a 34-point performance – his best ever in a post-season.

10 things: Siakam's assertiveness on offence helps Raptors stave off ... (Sportsnet.ca)

After the final whistle, Embiid made a show of sarcastically clapping in the faces of the officials, and proceeded to lobby for the whistle in the post-game interview. Harden hunted Young on the switch, and Embiid pinned Young easily when he tried to front the post. That being said, he still brought value with his length on defence, and his support on the defensive glass. His return wasn't even clear at the start of the day, as Nurse's prediction was that Barnes would be doubtful, but he was clearly capable in warmups. 3. Siakam answered the physicality of the Sixers and gave it right back to them, which drew a frustrated response. Regardless of whether VanVleet is in or out, the Raptors should keep attacking through Siakam and try to keep as much size on the floor as possible. As Siakam gestured for a timeout with three minutes left, Embiid charged at him with a blatant tackle after the whistle, which was deemed as a technical after review. Young also ran the break a few times, and even left Embiid on the deck with a wicked crossover before mailing the jumper. Philadelphia was very effective in zone coverage during parts of Games 2 and 3, and even though it was sparingly used here, the Raptors have not shown a consistent ability to break the zone. The Raptors have played well enough for this series to be knotted at 2-2, but at least they have a proof of concept on how to beat the Sixers. Siakam's approach was clear from the jump, as he was determined to score no matter who was put in front of him. His assertiveness only grew over the course of the game, peaking in the fourth quarter where he scored 11 of 13 points for the Raptors at one point to extend their lead over the Sixers. Siakam finished with a playoff-high 34 points which included 15 trips to the foul line, and heard MVP chants for his effort.

Raptors show trademark fighting spirit to stay alive in series vs. 76ers (Sportsnet.ca)

It allowed Toronto to finally pull away in a game that was tied after the first quarter, and which they led only narrowly for most of the afternoon. Barnes earned to award thank to his combination of versatility and durability. I just played my role, did what I had to do and winning helps with it as well.” The 20-year-old from West Palm Beach Florida became just the third Raptor to ever win the rookie-of-the-year award and he did it in noteworthy fashion, winning the closest vote in 20 years over Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley by just 15 points. With VanVleet having to sit out the second half and Barnes limited with his ankle, Raptors head coach Nick Nurse rode a lineup of five 6-foot-9 (ish) wings in Siakam, Young, Anunoby, Chris Boucher and Achiuwa. The only adjustment down the stretch was when Nurse exchanged Trent Jr. for Boucher. He also assisted on a key triple by Anunoby that put Toronto up 12 with 3:44 to play that gave the Raptors some breathing room in a game that offered little chance to relax. And when you are fighting through one thing and all of a sudden you get another one that feels as painful as it looked to him, then it’s frustrating.” “Step on the floor and try to get us into some different things. “Just try to bring that defensive effort,” Barnes said of his game plan. Pascal Siakam Saves the Raptors From a Sweep (CalBearsMaven)

Five thoughts on Toronto avoiding a 76ers sweep at home.

VanVleet left early with a hip injury—he was visibly upset when he came out of the game and ripped his jersey while walking to the locker room. A few sets of late free throws allowed Embiid to cross the 20-point threshold, but this was his worst game of the series. He was forced to dip into his rotation in Game 4 and was rewarded with a series-high 36 bench points. With Fred VanVleet missing much of the game and Scottie Barnes not at 100%, Toronto desperately needed a career game from Siakam and it got one. After not attempting a free throw in Game 3, Siakam got to the line at will and connected on 13 of 15 opportunities. Toronto coach Nick Nurse noted before his team took the court on Saturday that if the Raptors won to bring the series score to 3–1, it wouldn’t be 3–0 anymore, offering a rosy outlook on a deficit that no team in NBA history has overcome.
