GDB 78.0 Wrap Up: Merry Clinch-mas! Oilers lock in playoff spot with 6-3 win over the Avalanche. April 22, 2022, 10:00 PM | ...

Only 15 seconds after Bouchard gave the Oilers the lead, Nichushkin picked up his second of the night (2-2) with a wrist shot off the rush, which happened to be one of the only goals against that I wish Smith would have had. - Valeri Nichushkin got the Avalanche on the board (1-0) with a chance off the rush that came because the Oilers were caught being too aggressive in the offensive zone. - Darnell Nurseleft the game in the second period with some kind of lower-body injury and did not return. We know the whistles can go away at times so the boys will need to take advantage of whatever chances they do get. - Shortly after the Oilers killed off the two-man disadvantage, Evander Kanetied the game (1-1) on a sneaky little wrap-around that seemed to confuse Kuemper a little bit because he crossed the crease at a glacial pace to try and stop that puck. Mix a little bit of luck with some damned fine hand-eye coordination and all of a sudden, the Oilers were up by a goal. He’s another guy you’d love to have going at full speed as we head into the playoffs and I’m hoping tonight’s goal will be the start of something. And while I want to say that the Oilers had a decent opening period — they actually did play pretty well for the most part — their one big mistake wound up in the back of the net, and it ended up being the difference. I mean, the expectation coming into the period was that the boys would find a way to tie things up so having them potentially set themselves up with a win was a wonderful turn of events. Heading into the third period with a two-goal lead, the Oilers needed to be very careful with their approach to closing things out because the Avalanche have more than enough weapons to erase any lead in a short amount of time. So when Yamamoto scored to make it a 5-2 hockey game at the midway point of the period, my heart started pounding in anticipation of locking down our chance to compete for the Stanley Cup. With the sellout crowd at Rogers Place setting the tone, the Oilers weathered every storm the Avalanche sent their way as found a way to close out a massive game against a very good hockey team. That said, beating the Avalanche is one of the NHL’s harder tasks to manage so it was going to take a full 60 minutes if they were going to lock up that sweet ‘X’ in the standings.

With a 9-1-1 record in their last 11 games, they now have 98 points, four clear of the third-place Los Angeles Kings.

“Obviously when you’re surveying the field and you look at the Edmonton lineup with the roster they had, it was extremely attractive. After the Oilers killed off a two-man Avs’ advantage to start middle frame, with Colorado up 1-0, Kane circled the net and jammed it past Kuemper to tie it. “It was a game where we wanted to make a statement. At the end of the day we’re in (playoffs). That’s goal No. 1.” There was no update post-game but if he’s out for any period of time, the Oilers are obviously in trouble. The Oilers have four more games left and the Panthers have five. - The Oilers have now reached the playoffs in three consecutive seasons for the first time since they made the playoffs five years in a row between 1996-97 and 2000-01. You’d have to go back to 2005-06 in order to find a mid-season pick-up who has had as much of an impact on the Oilers as Kane has. “Any time you join a team halfway through the season, it’s going to take you more than a couple of games to really get your game to where it was maybe the previous year. The Oilers were the better team in terms of possession, besting Colorado 43-to-38 in shot attempts, and they were superior at converting their possession into high-danger scoring chances, as they dominated the Avs 11-to-4 on that front. Valeri Nichushkin opened the scoring in the first period and Colorado skated into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Oilers clinch playoff berth led by McDavid, coaching change (NHL.com)

The Edmonton Oilers clinched a berth in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs for a third straight season with a 6-3 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday.

Question Mark: Improving team defense and solid second-half play from Mike Smith (15-9-2, 2.88 goals-against average, .913 save percentage, two shutouts in 27 games) and Mikko Koskinen (25-11-4, 3.09 GAA, .902 save percentage, one shutout in 42 games) have reduced panic about the goaltending. McDavid collected the puck between the red line and the New York blue line and coasted cross-ice for a moment while looking for his opening. Unsung Hero: Defenseman Cody Ceci, who signed a four-year contract with the Oilers on July 28, 2021, had a difficult role to fill. He had to replace Adam Larsson, who had been a tough-to-play-against, defensive-minded defenseman who chose to sign with the Seattle Kraken as an unrestricted free agent. Before the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline on March 21, the Oilers made two additions to bolster their depth. The goal now will be to do more with the opportunity.

3 Takeaways From Oilers' Playoff-Clinching Win Over Avalanche (The Hockey Writers)

The Edmonton Oilers clinched a playoff berth Friday night with a 6-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Here are three takeaways.

Yamamoto is also averaging 1.1 more points per game when he is on the top line compared to when he is on the second line. Yamamoto is averaging one point per game more on the top line than Puljujarvi is averaging the top line. Since signing as a free-agent with the Oilers on Jan. 27, the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder has provided Edmonton with size, speed, and strength — and scoring. Now, with the return of Edmonton’s famously electric playoffs crowds, the Oilers will look to capitalize on that atmosphere, just as they have during their current streak of 13 home games without a regulation loss. Carson did it in just 28 games after he came to Edmonton as part of the Wayne Gretzky trade in Aug. 1988. After suffering two razor-thin losses to Colorado in the last few weeks (3-2 in overtime on March 21 and 2-1 in a shootout on April 9), Edmonton was finally able to topple the Western Conference’s first-place team.

EDMONTON — How many hurdles stand in the way of a team with playoff aspirations from October to the night it clinches that spot in April?

This year the regular season was more of a slog. Even when it is not going our way, they seem to find a way to support us. Then they were rudely swept, and left to ponder what it was they lacked in the playoffs, when the regular season had gone so swimmingly. And I really feel like going through the tough times this year really made this team stick together, grow and understand what it takes to win tight hockey games. It was hard for us to stay healthy, that is a big issue. But with the Los Angeles Kings an almost certain first round opponent, the moment gave them something else — a feeling that they’re ready for what lies ahead.

5 Reasons the Oilers Made the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs (The Hockey Writers)

The Edmonton Oilers have clinched a playoff berth for the third season in a row. This was due to a number of key factors that played a part throughout the ...

The work isn’t done, and all these key factors must keep contributing if the Oilers hope to make a playoff run this season. They started the season only scoring the first goal of the game 12 times in the first 44 games. It didn’t help that Nugent-Hopkins missed a number of games, as he is a key piece on the top unit assisting in zone entries and puck control on the left side of the ice. The confidence remains high when the team opens the scoring and they just continue to pour on the pressure. At the other end of the ice, the penalty kill has been stellar. Kane is also playing at nearly a point per game pace (36 points) and he isn’t even a regular contributor to the fourth-best power play in the league. Woodcroft has coached a number of the younger Oilers in Bakersfield, so he knew how to handle struggles and young players trying to find their way. They are consistently at the very top of the league and prove night in and night out that they are two of the best in the game. He gave the Oilers a legitimate scoring winger who also adds physicality to a top-six that lacks that. The lines were spread out much better and the bottom-six was finally given the opportunity to produce at both ends of the ice. At the time, the team was 23-18-3 (.557 win percentage). Since Woodcroft’s hiring, the Oilers are 23-8-3 (.721 win percentage). Before the Tippett firing, the team was securely in a playoff spot after a hot start. The Edmonton Oilers have clinched a playoff berth for the third season in a row.

How well do the 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers rank in comparison to the ... (Oilers Nation)

They won in six games against the San Jose Sharks in the first round, but lost to the Anaheim Ducks in a heartbreaking seven-game series in the second round.

Neither side has a considerable edge in regards to special teams, but Woodcroft’s Oilers have been dominant in regards to goal share, expected goal share, and possession. LA’s current head coach is McLellan, and at the time, Woodcroft was the assistant coach under McLellan in 16-17. This was a season in which there was quite a lot of debate over the value of Kris Russell. He was also deployed against difficult opposition, but struggled in this role, posting a team-worst relative DFF% of -2.8%. His goal share was quite good, as it was at 54%, but possessed an overall CF% and xGF% of 47% and 48% respectively. Dave Tippett’s Oilers were quite high-event in regards to special teams; the power play was excellent, but the penalty kill was abysmal this season. Most of his strong results were due to dominant play against weaker competition, while it was somewhat of the opposite for Oscar Klefbom, who played slightly better against top competition with a relative DFF% of +0.4%. Nonetheless, both had strong seasons and were key factors in their regular-season success. Of course, a large portion of his success should be attributed to McDavid, but it’s worth mentioning that McDavid posted a superior GF% and xGF% with Maroon on-ice, as opposed to without. The bottom-six without Josh Archibald on-ice is actually a positive in terms of goal differential (the bottom-six under Woodcroft has scored 25 goals, and allowed 26 against. Hopefully, this is the end of the narrative that Draisaitl is “a product of McDavid.” However, Woodcroft’s Oilers possess the more significant advantage here, as they’re considerably superior in regards to generating goals, and both shot quality and quantity. Many should recall some brutal reffing in that series, especially the incident with Ryan Kesler in Game 5 (although it’s worth mentioning that Anaheim was still the superior team in regards to CF% and xGF% that series). Ever since the arrivals of Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson, Edmonton’s performance has significantly improved, as Woodcroft’s Oilers hold a record of 23-8-3. The closest they’ve come to a deep playoff run (so far) was in the season of 2016-17.

The bad news is that the Flames and Oilers can’t do anything about the pandemic or structural economic factors. (If we’re being honest, a lot of Oilers fans might have similar anxiety about their team, too, based on their lack of post-season success.) The Saddledome has had one full sell-out this season – Mar. 26 against Edmonton – while Rogers Place has had two (Nov. 20 against Chicago and Apr. 9 against Colorado), though a few other Edmonton home games got close to sell-outs. A lot of fans might simply prefer their living room set-ups after having that be their only option to experience games for so long. As a result, ticket prices are a little bit higher in Edmonton (because of the shiny new building).
