He was found guilty in 2009 before the conviction was overturned on appeal a year later. Today his statue stands outside Montreal's Bell Centre arena alongside Canadiens all-time greats Howie Morenz, Maurice Richard and Béliveau. His No. 10 hangs in the rafters of the arena after being retired on Feb. 16, 1985. He then played two more years with his hometown Quebec Nordiques before calling it a career for a second and final time following the 1991 season. Lafleur's relationship with Canadiens management started to sour in the 1980s. I mean, I was in awe of him." However, Lafleur suffered through health issues in the latter stages of his life. On March 24, 1981, Lafleur barely escaped a fatal crash after smashing his Cadillac into a highway fence while driving home. He often mesmerized fans with his signature long blond hair flowing behind him as he rushed up the ice before unleashing one of his patented booming slapshots. He also captured the 1977 Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. Lafleur's arrival in Montreal, like his departure years later, was controversial. At the time, Lafleur was only the second player in league history, after Gordie Howe, to return to the NHL as a player after being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Guy Lafleur, the beloved Montreal Canadiens icon whose indelible mark on the storied franchise transcended far beyond his era, has died. He was 70.

Soon enough, the yearning to lace them up on the biggest stage was too much of a force to ignore. He scored 119 points, a shiver that presaged the fever of his performances to come as he tallied six straight seasons with 50 or more goals and would pull off a three-peat of the Art Ross Trophy. The following year, the Canadiens made him the sixth player in franchise history to have their number retired, raising his No. 10 to the rafters. You hear the cheers and a light shines so brightly that it can blind you forever. Hockey was too much a part of his DNA, though, to leave it altogether. The Canadiens had bet big on the Quebec native, trading up in the draft and choosing Lafleur to be Beliveau's successor over Marcel Dionne, another star francophone. "He is constantly being hammered and fouled," Larry Robinson, the former Canadiens defenceman, said. His creativity at times bordered on controlled chaos, and made him a target of opposing teams whenever he laced up his skates. Two months later, he underwent another surgery to remove both the upper lobe of his lung and lymph nodes. "Besides his enormous ability and great desire, Guy had extraordinary charisma," Scotty Bowman, the Canadiens coach during the 1970s dynasty, said. He is the leader in regular-season points (1,246), assists (728) and single-season points (136, holding the first through sixth places in that category). He has the most 40-goal, 50-goal and 100-point seasons (six each), and leads in game-winning goals in a season (13) and in a career (94). "All members of the Canadiens organization are devastated by his passing.

The QMJHL retired Lafleur’s No. 4 throughout the league last year and he was named a Distinguished Honouree of the Order of Hockey in Canada last month. He appeared in 67 games for the Rangers, scoring 18 goals and adding 27 assists. The winner of the Hart Trophy in 1977 and 1978, he became the first player in NHL history to record six straight seasons of at least 50 goals and 100 points from 1975 to 1980. He became just the second player to continue his active career following his induction into the Hall of Fame after Gordie Howe (followed later by Mario Lemieux). In a scoring slump and unhappy with his playing time and his relationship with teammate-turned-head coach Jacques Lemaire, he asked for a trade. He left a mark on an entire generation of Quebecers. He made us dream. A native of Thurso, Que., Lafleur appeared in 1,126 games over 17 seasons with the Canadiens, New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques. He scored 560 goals and added 793 assists. Knowing the backlash he would face for moving a franchise legend, general manager Serge Savard would not honour his request. When it appeared that the L.A. Kings would finish last the following season, Pollock traded centre Ralph Backstrom to Los Angeles. Backstrom helped lift the Kings past the Seals and Oakland’s eventual last-place finish gave the Canadiens the No. 1 pick – and Lafleur. "All members of the Canadiens organization are devastated by his passing. "Throughout his career, he allowed us to experience great moments of collective pride. Nicknamed ‘The Flower’ and ‘Le Demon Blond,’ Lafleur’s prodigious talent became evident in junior hockey.

'Once in a generation': Quebecers mourn Montreal Canadiens ... (CBC.ca)

Tributes are pouring in from former Montreal Canadiens players, fans, and politicians as the hockey world mourns the loss of icon Guy Lafleur.

A record-setter and a five-time Stanley Cup champion, he inspired countless Quebecers, Canadians, and hockey fans around the world. He said he and Henri Richard, a fellow Hall of Famer, took Lafleur under their wing when he first arrived with the team. He left a mark on an entire generation of Quebecers. He made us dream. He enjoyed 14 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, rewriting the record book along the way. He went public with his experience to warn others about the dangers of lung cancer and the need for early screening. About 10 players and former teammates gathered for a dinner with him. "I learned a lot from Guy that day." We'll miss you, Number 10." He made us win." "He's a wonderful person. In September 2019, he underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery, where doctors discovered a lesion on his right lung. But by October 2020, the cancer was back and he had chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments.

Montreal Canadiens: Emil Heineman Could be Interesting Addition ... (A Winning Habit)

The Montreal Canadiens added a couple of interesting prospects at the trade deadline and Emil Heineman could provide a boost for the Laval Rocket.

Up front they will be lead by a great top line of Rafael Harvey-Pinard, J.S. Dea and Jesse Ylonen, but where the Rocket are lacking is in scoring depth. The 20 year old is now in Montreal, and was skating on his own at the practice facility earlier this week. Tyler Toffoli was traded to the Calgary Flames on February 14th even though he was in just the second year of a four year contract with a more than reasonable cap hit of $4.25 million. He also have an Erik Cole-like ability to just put his inside shoulder down and drive to the net while defenders try their best to slow him down. What he does have is great speed and he uses his size well to protect the puck while using that speed. But the first big trade made by Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton was a player with plenty of term left on a great contract.
