Also on Thursday the Vancouver Canucks look to keep their slim playoff hopes going when they host the white hot Minnesota Wild. This is his first season as a member of the Coyotes after playing the past four years as a member of the New York Islanders. He has scored 256 goals and recorded 549 points in his career in the regular season and another nine goals and 18 total points in 65 career playoff games. He keeps inching closer to Gretzky’s all time record and is not really slowing down even as he gets older. This is a good start for the stretch run. — NHL (@NHL)April 21, 2022

Such consistency would be nice, but not a requirement for a championship-caliber franchise, and arguably not even practical with how much parity the NHL is designed to foster and how much luck plays into a single season. It’s worth risking more strain for a shot at the Stanley Cup because that’s why everyone plays in the first place, but there could also be long-term benefits if it doesn’t work out this year. The Golden Knights are fighting against time and their bodies to lock up a playoff berth and salvage what’s been the toughest season in team history. The salary cap dissipates in the postseason so that would no longer be a problem if they make it, but it’s hard to imagine them ever getting fully healthy this year given what they’ve been through. And maybe that shouldn’t be such a surprise considering the last two seasons. And most of them have something in common—they’re still not up to 100% health- and conditioning-wise.

Ovechkin is also the oldest player in NHL history to score 50 in a season. “Hopefully, that’s just a momentum boost on how we have to play in that third period going forward and give ourselves the best chance at making the postseason.” “That was a huge momentum swing for us.” “I thought we came out and we played a little bit tighter as a unit. I thought L.T. when he went in, he played great and made a lot of huge saves for our group and helped us get that win.” Logan Thompson stopped 13 shots in the final two periods and didn’t face any in overtime.

And he found it a couple of times. “Yeah, it’s pretty cool,” said Ovechkin, who continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky for the all-time lead in goals scored and now has 780. Ovechkin might’ve had a hat trick had linemate Evgeny Kuznetsov not interfered with a shot that made it 1-0 early in the game. And as soon as they got behind by one, he started really looking for those openings behind us. “How good is Ovechkin? It’s unbelievable,” said Vegas coach Peter DeBoer. “Two tonight and he could’ve had another two. Ovechkin, 36, continued his ascension up the NHL’s all-time scoring charts.

5 Worst Golden Knights' Losses This Season (The Hockey Writers)

As the regular season comes to an end and the Vegas Golden Knights on the outside looking in at the playoffs, here are their worst losses.

While there’s no shame in losing to the perennially postseason-bound Pens, the Golden Knights emerged from a dominant first period with a 3-0 lead. On the other hand of the momentum coin, Vegas sports just a 3-2-1 record following the loss, including a subsequent overtime loss in their third Vancouver game in just nine days. While Eichel was a minus-1 with no points in just under 18 minutes in front of a hostile crowd at the KeyBank Center, most of Buffalo’s damage was done by the key players who went the other way, with Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs each notching a goal. Momentum is everything in hockey, which is at least partially why the Golden Knights’ 5-1 home loss to the Vancouver Canucks looms so large. The Golden Knights looked motivated, jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Here’s a ranking of the Golden Knights’ five toughest losses of the year:

NHL standings look with a week left in 2022 season: Who wins ... (USA TODAY)

With a week left in the 2022 NHL season, here's a standings and schedule look on what still has to be decided and who could win awards races.

Josi, who won the award in 2020, and Makar will face each other on April 28. The Bruins have the most regulation wins and the Capitals have the fewest regulation-overtime wins, the second tiebreaker. Florida's Jonathan Huberdeau has a shot to win the scoring title and the Presidents' Trophy. Toronto's Auston Matthews, the NHL's goal leader, is out with a minor injury. It's between Nashville's Roman Josi and Colorado's Cale Makar, who have set franchise records for points in a season by a defenseman. The Canadiens (51 points) and Coyotes (50) are slumping again after playing decent hockey. There even has been talk of support for Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin, who leads the league in goals-saved above expected, according to moneypuck.com, and fits the Hart Trophy's definition of most valuable to his team. Colorado has lost two in a row after a nine-game winning streak ended Monday, allowing the Florida Panthers (11-game streak) to catch the Avalanche in the Presidents' Trophy race. The Los Angeles Kings (92 points) hold the third spot in Pacific and still have a chance to claim second place and home-ice advantage in the first round. In addition to Vegas, the Kings are being pursued by the longshot Vancouver Canucks (87), who are on an eight-game point streak and have five games left. The key game in the wild-card race is Vegas at Dallas on April 26. The Hurricanes will learn the status of injured goalie Frederik Andersen next week and the Rangers have recorded three consecutive shutouts. The wild-card teams have a game in hand.

Defenseman hits 'another level' to fuel Knights' playoff hopes (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

The Golden Knights are still hanging in the mix for a postseason berth in large part thanks to the efforts of defenseman Shea Theodore.

That three of those points came in crucial late-game situations for the Knights is a bonus. Plenty of that production has come within the last month. His six overtime goals with the Knights are tied for the most in franchise history with left wings Jonathan Marchessault and Max Pacioretty. The skating, hands and creativity are rare for a defenseman. It’s not the only time he’s given them one the last month. “Great players go to another level at important times,” coach Pete DeBoer said.
