The Golden Knights and the Canucks have a game in hand on Los Angeles, but Vancouver is the toughest opponent remaining on the Kings' schedule. It was very reminiscent of battles of the past. Kempe's 34 goals are tied for the second-most by a Los Angeles player in the past 15 seasons, surpassed only by captain Anze Kopitar's 35 goals in 2017-18. Los Angeles is closing in on the end of its three-season playoff drought, moving five points clear of Vegas and Vancouver for third place in the Pacific Division. “If we expect to play a couple of weeks from now, we have to be comfortable (in this type of game),” Quick said. “He made huge saves, obviously a lot of them on the penalty kill.

FINAL - Kings 2, Ducks 1 - Quick, McLellan - LA Kings Insider (lakingsinsider.com)

The Kings got goals from Adrian Kempe and Phillip Danault, in addition to 29 saves on 30 shots by goaltender Jonathan Quick, to earn the victory on the road.

– Forward Phillip Danault scored his 25th goal of the season early in the third period. – Forward Anze Kopitar collected the lone assist on Kempe’s goal, his 45th of the season. I thought we started the game well, the first 7-10 minutes, I thought there was a phase in the first when we didn’t want to shoot the puck, we got cute, stickhandled it and I think it cost us a bit of momentum. Goaltender pulled at the end of the night, whether it’s us or the opposition, it almost seems like it happens on a regular basis. He feels real good in the net right now and we feel good with him in the net right now. While initially ruled no goal on the ice, the call was overturned following a coaches challenge to give the Kings a 2-1 lead.

NHL roundtable: Will the Kings finally clinch a playoff spot? (Los Angeles Times)

NHL roundtable: Will the Kings make the playoffs? Will the Ducks play spoilers? Kings center Phillip Danault celebrates with his teammates on the bench.

These last two meetings with the Kings will be the playoff games for the Ducks and you can bet they will treat them as such. Ducks fans already knew going in this would be a season of playing youngsters, taking lumps, and facing big questions when it came to the trade deadline. Let him have another year to develop the youngsters, many of them having worked with Eakins in San Diego. At the end of next season, then Verbeek can revisit the topic. Barrero: He seems to have done a lot in a short period but also has been deliberate and thoughtful, which is a good sign. That said, they have looked overwhelmed on occasion against elite teams late in the season and that makes me think they just don’t have enough this season. Barrero: I’m changing my answer from a previous roundtable, and I do agree now that Quick is the way to go and Todd McLellan seems to agree based on his goalie picks of late. Phillip Danault knew there was more to his game than being a defensive star and the Kings agreed. The Kings and Ducks meet for the fourth and final time Saturday at Crypto.com Arena and by the end of that game, the Kings should have a better idea if they are playoff-bound. Barrero: Extremely. With all they have overcome and with the rest of the West teams waiting for what would not have been a surprising demise, to get this close and fail could set their rebuilding plan back. Zupke: I think it would be something short of an epic collapse, especially in the eyes of their fan base, despite the injuries they’ve had. The Golden Knights were a popular pick to win the division or even the conference, and now they’re struggling to get into the playoffs as a wild card. The Kings and Ducks each have five games remaining in the regular season.

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (40-27-10) @ Anaheim Ducks (30-33-14) WHAT: NHL REGULAR-SEASON GAME WHEN: Tuesday, April 19 @ 7:00 PM Pacific WHERE: Honda Center – ...

The Kings skated this morning at Toyota Sports Performance Center and took a team bus to Orange County earlier today. Over these five games, the Kings will get opportunities on the man advantage to impact a game and despite an unproductive season in that area, there’s no better time than the present. “We’ve played each other quite a bit over the last couple of years, with COVID I think it’s been 10 times since last year, the animosity is higher than maybe most. “When we’re playing the way we are capable of, and capable of and need to play, we’re in tight games. “We haven’t had an exceptional year when it comes to the power play, but the 10, 11 guys that get to play are going to have to perform. While you can say what you will about standings or the schedule, the fact of the matter is, the Kings don’t have a tendency to blow teams out in many situations. “We need the power play, as I told them, over the next five games, it’s going to be on their tape at some point,” McLellan said. In the one-goal win over Columbus, McLellan referenced the power play as something that could have made that victory a little bit more comfortable but failed to do so. On that topic, tonight’s matchup squares off two of the NHL’s top three teams in terms of number of one-goal games played. “Guys are feeling it and every game we play in this stretch run gives us a little bit more of an opportunity to grow through those moments.” I noted the other day that only Dallas has fewer victories this season by 3+ goals than the Kings, among teams currently in a playoff position. With today’s skate in mind, as well as yesterday’s practice combinations, here’s a look at how the Kings could align at Honda Center this evening –

The Eagles are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and have amassed a goal differential of +33 this season. Frk ranks fifth in the league in overall scoring with 71 points and second in AHL goal scoring. Both Tynan’s point and assist totals are career-highs for the eighth-year pro. The Eagles made the trip to Ontario earlier in the month, pulling off a sweep of the Reign. In the season series, Ontario is 1-1-1 against Colorado, picking up their lone win at home on Nov. 7.
