I Watched This Game: Are the Canucks actually going to do this thing? (Vancouver Is Awesome)

The Vancouver Canucks took charge over the Dallas Stars on Monday night and now, against all odds, control their own playoff destiny.

- The Canucks kicked off the second period with a quick goal to extend the lead. - The 4-2 goal started with a great play by Garland at the blue line to hold the puck in the Stars’ zone. - That was the end of Oettinger’s night and Scott Wedgewood came in to replace him. - A quick third-period goal put the game to bed. Appropriately for someone named Dries, he put the Stars in the spin cycle (shoutout to @theonlystowie on Twitter) and sent a pass back to Pettersson against the grain. - I’m just going to do my best to ignore the other possibility: that the Canucks could set a new record for the most points by any team to miss the playoffs. - My favourite moment of the game came when the puck got stuck as Jason Dickinson battled with Jamie Benn and Miro Heiskanen in the corner. - Faksa had a golden opportunity to give the Stars the lead five minutes later, given an open net from a superb pass by Michael Raffl, but he somehow missed. He was unable to replicate that success in subsequent seasons and has spent the bulk of his time in the AHL since then. That gives the Canucks six-straight wins as they make a last, desperate push to make the playoffs. That means we’d go to the tiebreakers, the first of which is regulation wins. “It’s the team I grew up following and cheering for,” said Hammond of the Canucks a few years ago.

NHL Talk: Flames, Canucks, Capitals, Golden Knights, Hurricanes ... (The Hockey Writers)

In this edition of “NHL Talk,” these are the top hockey stories with quotes from players, coaches, managers, and more.

… The work in what has happened all year and what has happened the whole year has put us in a spot where we don’t have the luxury to relax and play loose this time of the year. “We’ve been playing that way for a good chunk of time now because we’re desperate and that’s what desperate hockey is.” Carolina is gearing up for a playoff run, with the fourth-best record in the NHL this season at 49-20-8. Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin scored his 48th goal of the season in a 3-2 win at the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. At age 36, he tied Teemu Selanne (2006-07) for the most goals in a season by an NHL player age 36 or older. Gave him a little bit extra towards the end of the game and the D-zone, an extra half shift. A lot of help from those guys in the locker room.”

The path to the third seed in the Pacific Division is now wide open ... (Canucks Army)

Firstly, the Vancouver Canucks beat the Dallas Stars in regulation, closing out a “must-win” game in decisive fashion. Secondly, the Vegas Golden Knights lost ...

And so, the focus in Vancouver really should be on that third Pacific Division seed. The answer is exactly as many losses as the Golden Knights take, and exactly one fewer than the Kings (so long as the Canucks stay ahead in the tiebreaker, too.) It really is that simple. If the Canucks can just match the record of the Kings between now and then, they’ll head into that matchup with a chance to move functionally ahead in the standings. The Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars hold down the two Wild Card spots in the Western Conference right now with identical 43-28-5 records, each good for 91 points. The Canucks and Kings meet in the second-to-last game of the regular season on April 28, 2022. That puts them four points ahead of the Canucks, with five games remaining and Vancouver holding a single game in hand. Los Angeles’ remaining games are a bit of a cake-walk; they play Anaheim twice, Chicago once, and Seattle once. Now, the Canucks hold the higher point percentage at .566 with a 38-28-10 record, compared to the Golden Knights’ .565 and 41-31-5 record. But staying ahead of Vegas is only part of the playoff puzzle. It won’t be a slam-dunk. The Canucks have six games remaining. There will, of course, be obstacles.

Potential Playoff Opponent: Vancouver Canucks (Oil On Whyte)

Well now we've been through the surefire opponents in the potential Oilers playoff opponent series, let's go through some of the less likely candidates.

Allvin then turned around and hired Bruce Boudreau as head coach of the Canucks. This is a surprisingly safe hire as Boudreau’s teams have a history of having great regular seasons and then choking in the playoffs. Vancouver, on the other hand, is the hottest team in the division right now, on a six game winning streak at the time of this writing and only a single point behind Vegas for fourth in the division. There’s only six games left for Vancouver – a possible 12 points up for grabs – so only time will tell if they get into the playoffs at the 11th hour or if their streak is too little too late for this season but provides them hope for next season.

Playoffs or not, the Canucks late season push has been fun (The Canuck Way)

The Vancouver Canucks have won six straight and are still in the playoff picture. Whether they make it or not, the push has been very fun to say the least.

The Canucks have this mentality of making people not count them out and they have been a team that has looked exciting, quick and energetic in recent games. Vasily Podkolzin is showing flashes of the player he can be and the Canucks are getting goals from guys who usually face a lot of criticism in Alex Chiasson and Jason Dickinson. After a dismal start to the season, Bruce Boudreau came in and made the Canucks fun to watch which included the seven-game “Boudreau bump” win streak. However, the Kings have an easy schedule as none of their remaining games have playoff-bound teams. However, as fellow writer Zaahid Lalani pointed out, they would have to most likely make the playoffs through the Pacific Division. The Stars and Nashville Predators are tied with 91 points for the wild card spots. There is still a chance to make the playoffs.

The Vancouver Canucks will be looking to make it seven in a row, facing off against the Ottawa Senators in the second half of their back-to-back on Tuesday.

During that contest, Ottawa gave up five powerplay opportunities to the Kraken, while also being outshot by a wide margin of 29-14. Fortunately, the Senators are also in a very similar situation, coming off of a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Seattle Kraken on Monday night. And, though Nashville and Dallas have major concerns in generating offence, both of those Central teams also have a leg up on the two wild-card spots. And that opportunity to bury a rival should give the Ducks something to play for. The rival Ducks will have a lot to say about it. Ever since, though, the Canucks are 30-13-8 and with a .667 points percentage that ranks tied with Boston for sixth in the league. • The Canucks are 8-2-2 since the trade deadline and have now won six games in a row. Early on, it looked like they could jump ahead of schedule and hang in the playoff race, but that has sagged badly in the second half -- since Jan. 1, Anaheim's .384 points percentage (13-23-7 record) is 27th in the league. After pulling out a 6-2 win over Dallas on Monday, the Canucks are back at it Tuesday hosting the Ottawa Senators, and those will be another huge two points they'll need to collect. After Sunday, both teams will have just three games remaining (they're currently tied in the first tiebreaker). Could the Lightning gain another couple of points on the Bruins this week? While the Canucks were always kind of/sort of hanging around this race, they have been chasing the whole time, most of it with less than a five per cent chance of making it. They'll still have to leap over Vegas, too, but after a stunning 3-2 loss to New Jersey on home ice Monday night, the Golden Knights are a story for a different reason in this race: they are not resuming control of their destiny after getting a couple more key players back from injury. He has a .912 save percentage on the season with a 13-5-4 record and a positive (2.96) goals saved above average (28th out of 69 goalies). There could have been a race for top spot in the Atlantic Division. After a costly turnover in the neutral zone by Brady Tkachuk, the Canucks got possession and went to work. This start to the third period was less than ideal for a Canucks team that knows they’re going to have to scratch and claw their way In terms of possession and dangerous-looking chances, the Canucks dominated on the power play and in the minutes that followed. Things went from bad to worse for the Canucks after Alex Formenton moved past the defence and got in alone on Demko before snapping a shot blocker-side on the Vancouver goaltender to make it 3-2 Senators. The Canucks were awarded their fourth power play of the game with just over two minutes remaining in the period, and after the Canucks’ power play failed to solve Gustavsson for the duration of the two minutes, J.T. Miller slammed his stick in frustration. Transaction:#Canucksrecalled Spencer Martin on an emergency basis from Abbotsford earlier this afternoon. Oliver Ekman-Larsson took a penalty late in the period, and the Canucks managed to kill it off to remain up by a couple going into period number two. In the minutes that followed, the Senators made a pretty strong push to tie it up, but Jaroslav Halak was up to the challenge and looked sharp early on. Senators beat desperate Canucks 4-3 in the shootout (Silver Seven)

After playing only what the most generous would call hockey in Seattle the night before, the Senators visited the Canucks looking to show a little life.

To continue the theme of the second, we went 5 minutes without a whistle after that, and then 9:08 without a whistle to end the game. Brady Tkachuk had a glorious chance to win it at the buzzer, but his tip from point-blank somehow caught the outside edge of the post. Then Nikita Zaitsev made a great play, spotting a streaking Formenton and making the long pass to put him on a partial break. I hate to rag on Zaitsev, but he made a play on the PK that was quintessential Zaitsev. With the Sens rushing up shorthanded but without a clear chance, they passed the puck back to Zaitsev to kill some time. He passed it up to Connor Brown, who again sent it back to Zaitsev. Zaitsev then couldn’t decide whether to pass it or dump it, so he held onto it until two forecheckers got right in his face, and forced a turnover, allowing the Vancouver powerplay to get set up. The Sens would carry a bunch of the play thereafter, with Tim Stützle and Drake Batherson standing out in particular, but it was the Canucks who struck second. He took a slapshot deliberately wide, planning for it to bounce in front, where Parker Kelly made a fantastic shot. What did happen late in the first was Halak got injured on a net-front scramble, shaking his blocker hand like it had been pinned under his goalie stick or something. From there, the period was mostly Canucks. First, Zub took a penalty with 14:17 left in the period, which ended up being the last faceoff until the 6:33 mark. After playing only what the most generous would call hockey in Seattle the night before, the Senators visited the Canucks looking to show a little life. Zach Senyshyn took an awkward high-sticking penalty, and the Sens technically killed off the penalty, but Brock Boeser scored four seconds after it expired, before Senyshyn could even re-enter the zone. The Canucks had also played the night before, though they performed a 6-2 drubbing of the Stars, showing that they were still fighting for an unlikely playoff spot.
