Calgary Flames: Breaking Down Gaudreau's Shot at the Art Ross ... (The Hockey Writers)

Thanks to a two goal outing on Monday night, Johnny Gaudreau now trails Connor McDavid by just three points for the league lead.

Similar to McDavid, that seems like a tough task, but it is worth noting he has played at a similar rate as of late, having recorded six points in his past five games. He’s been a very active and reliable source for nearly two years at The Hockey Writers. He is a credentialed writer for the Calgary Flames but also does features on other teams throughout the league. Of course, these are all hypotheticals that could play out much differently, but regardless of what happens, this race appears to be one that will come right down to the finish. As for Draisaitl, it seems rather unlikely he would hit Gaudreau’s projected point total of 116, given that he would need 11 points in six games. As a result, he has moved past Leon Draisaitl for sole possession of third in league scoring, and trails the leader in Connor McDavid by just three points. With the 2021-22 season coming to an end in just under two weeks’ time, we now have a relatively good idea of how a number of things will turn out.

Breaking down the road to the Memorial Cup for the Calgary Flames ... (The Win Column)

The WHL playoffs start this week, with teams facing off in a standard 16-team playoff format. Eight teams from each division earned a spot in the tournament, ...

He clearly has the skills to be a very good player in this league, but that likely was not the problem. And unlike their counterparts, the Q’s playoffs will be best-of-five instead of best-of-seven for the first three rounds and a best-of-seven for the championship. Expect them not to be an easy out in the playoffs this year. He has struggled with a few injuries, including one that kept him out of the lineup for the last few games of the season. The Titan will realistically finish either third or fourth in the standings this season, and either way will have home ice advantage in their playoff matchup. Both Kerins and Beck will be in tough competition to make it to the Memorial Cup, but as in any playoffs, anything can happen. On the other side of the province, the seventh-seeded Ottawa 67’s will take on the second place North Bay Battalion in the first round of their playoffs. Teams will first have to win their respective league’s playoffs then faceoff in a ten-day tournament in order to win the cup. He has returned in the last week or so, but has not really put up points to end the year. The Oil Kings have Detroit Red Wings’ prospect Sebastian Cossa in net and Arizona Coyotes’ forward Dylan Guenther, while the ICE have potential top-10 picks Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie. Both teams will be the teams to beat in the WHL if either Flames’ prospect team hopes to see Memorial Cup action. Eight teams from each division earned a spot in the tournament, with the top seed facing off against the bottom seed on each side in a seven-game series. A number of Flames have won the tournament in their day.

Flames' 2022 First-Round Matchups Are No Cakewalks (The Hockey Writers)

Regardless of who the Calgary Flames' first round opponent is in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, they should be in for a tough test.

He has registered a SV% of .915 and a GAA of 2.49, and has the ability to frustrate Calgary’s sharpshooters. Their top line of Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski is a threat anytime they are on the ice and each is producing at or close to a point-per-game pace. Paul is also known for his interesting perspectives on the key issues and challenges facing the teams he follows. Battling for a postseason berth, the Predators are tied with the Stars for fourth spot in the Central Division with 91 points. In this season’s lone matchup with the Flames back in November, they notched a 3-2 overtime victory. Flames fans get to see the rubber match on Thursday. What’s more, many young goaltenders rise in the playoffs to perform beyond what were believed to be their limits. Then there was 2020, when the Flames were shown the door by the Stars after a humiliating 7-3 loss in Game 6. Who could forget 2019 when the Flames got an early start on their golf season after being eliminated by the Colorado Avalanche? That year they entered the playoffs atop the Western Conference. There’s no question the Flames are one of the teams who should be heavily favoured to hoist the Stanley Cup in June, or at least that’s the way it looks on paper. The dust bin of Stanley Cup history overflows with sure bets who went on to suffer ignominious falls worthy of Icarus. They are sure to crumble once they come up against the honest, hard-working lunch bucket crew that Flames general manager Brad Treliving has assembled, led as they are, by hard-nosed head coach Darryl Sutter.
