Avalanche's Nichushkin Proving His Value (The Hockey Writers)

Valeri Nichushkin is showing he's more than just a great defensive forward. He's putting up a career offensive year, too.

In line for their second consecutive Presidents’ Trophy, the Avalanche are obviously more focused on the postseason than the offseason, and how the Avs fare in the playoffs will play a large roll in who Sakic decides to keep around. Nichushkin is one of Colorado’s three big free agents on the offensive side, along with Kadri and Burakovsky. Nobody would blame the Avalanche for keeping all of them, but that’s probably unrealistic based on affordability. His forechecking stacks up against anyone in the NHL, and his elite defense makes him a valuable commodity. Enter Joe Sakic. The Avalanche general manager took a flyer on the Russian forward, and Nichushkin’s offensive output has built as steadily as his confidence. His longest stretch without a point this season is just four games, and he ended that stretch with three goals and an assist over the subsequent two games. He leads the club with two short-handed goals, impressive considering he had just two career short-handed goals entering this season.

The Colorado Avalanche just now announced they're signed Hobey Baker finalist Ben Meyers to a two-year contract, through the 2022-23 season.

Meyers has totaled 95 points (39g/56a) in 102 career NCAA contests with Minnesota. He served as an alternate captain his sophomore season in 2020-21 and was named an Honorable Mention All-Big 10 selection. He was also named to the Big Ten First All-Star Team and was an NCAA West Second-Team All-American selection. Meyers, 23, just completed his junior year at the University of Minnesota, where he served as captain in 2021-22 and recorded 41 points (17g/24a) in 34 games.

He had been monitoring his progress and had daily check-ins with the Avalanche training staff, Byram told Conor McGahey before the game in Pittsburgh last week. He is mature and understanding of the situation he had to deal with. In the three games Byram has played in, he recorded an assist Friday night against the Winnipeg Jets and averaged 15-18 minutes of ice time a night. Of course, he will want to play, retain his position in the lineup, and not risk being left out of the team. Colorado Avalanche defender Bowen Byram is now three games into his return to the Avs. This comes after missing almost three months with lingering concussion issues. Now a week into his return with three games under his belt, Byram has built back a foundation for him to play on.

Meyers was a Hobey Baker Finalist for the 2021-22 NCAA Season and Big Ten Player of the Year.

That was good enough to place his name beside University of Denver forward Bobby Brink and Minnesota State goaltender Dryden McKay as a Hobey Baker Finalist. Additionally, with the NHL’s decision not to go to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing this past winter, Meyers secured a spot on the United States roster and logged two goals and four points. Meyers is a well-rounded forward who was able to play up and down the Gophers lineup swapping between left wing and center. Meyers was ranked the no.

Meyers and the Gophers shut down some of the nation’s top talent in the Worcester Regional. Ethen Frank led the nation in scoring but failed to even record a shot in the game between the Western Michigan Broncos and the Gophers. Frank was coming off a seven-shot performance against Northeastern and had 15 shots in the three previous games. Meyers ranked first on the Gophers in blocked shots with 52 and first on the team in defensive zone faceoff wins. He is a workhorse and a competitor who cares about the game like nobody else. As a captain his senior year of High school, Meyers recorded 46 goals and 53 assists for 99 points in 25 games. Meyers is also the second Gopher Hockey player to be named a Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist since former Minnesota Wild alum Jordan Leopold, who was a finalist in 2002. As the Gophers co-captain Meyers led the Gophers to a Big Ten regular-season championship and most importantly a frozen four appearance.

Game Preview #74: New Jersey Devils @ Colorado Avalanche (All About The Jersey)

The Devils beat the Arizona Coyotes by a score of 6-2 on Tuesday evening, a game that was most notable for the first career goals by Fabian Zetterlund and Kevin ...

Can the Devils get another win against the Avs? What are the keys to the game for you? Colorado hosted the LA Kings last night in a TNT nationally televised game, host the Devils tonight on the back end of a back-to-back, and are probably looking ahead to a rematch with Carolina over the weekend. It’s not only imperative for the Devils to play a sound defensive game and get a competent start in net from whoever their goaltender is later today, but they need to avoid giving Colorado’s 5th ranked power play extra chances, or they will pay. Lastly, the Devils were probably fortunate last time they met that Colorado was on the back end of a back-to-back, got out to a big lead against the Devils, took their foot off of the gas, and already started looking ahead to a matchup two days later against Carolina. The Avs wound up losing that game. Get positioning, get guys in front who can screen the goaltender or redirect the puck, and good things tend to happen. This was very much a Jack Hughes doing Jack Hughes things and Jesper Bratt doing Jesper Bratt things type of game, mixed with getting some fortuitous bounces off of the opportunities they (and others) created. Jack Hughes fired a shot that Kuemper deflected away with his blocker, but the puck hit Nathan Bastian in the chest and he tapped in the loose puck. Let’s see what the Devils can come up with when Colorado is dictating the matchups this time around, but at least the Devils will have Nico Hischier in the lineup this time around. The Devils beat the Arizona Coyotes by a score of 6-2 on Tuesday evening, a game that was most notable for the first career goals by Fabian Zetterlund and Kevin Bahl. Chris had the recap of this game and noted how aside from the power play being abysmal as per usual, it was a good night offensively. The win set a new franchise record for wins in a regular season for Colorado. Aside from Pavel Francouz getting the start in net, I wouldn’t expect any changes from Colorado’s perspective. Nathan MacKinnon (3 G, 2 A) recorded the fourth hat trick of his career.

A lot of Avalanche players picked up points in this contest but Byram earned each of his two assists in the first three minutes of the game on the opening two scores. Phillip Danault found a third goal for the Kings before the final horn sounded on a 9-3 Avalanche final. Nathan MacKinnon got in on the action at 10:15 on a power play goal which chased Quick from the net and then Aube-Kubel scored his second of the period less than a minute later before Cal Petersen had a chance to settle into the net. Unfortunately there was a lot of time left and the Kings worked hard to get anything going their way in the game. Order was restored before the end of the period, however, as Andre Burakovsky found the back of the net at 13:05 for goal number five. Following a weekend back-to-back and a mini three-day break the Colorado Avalanche settled in at home to begin another back-to-back.

The Colorado Avalanche blue line is a bit crowded (Mile High Hockey)

What will the Avalanche do with the defensive pairings come playoff time? Is it getting crowded in here?

Lastly, Josh Manson could prove Sakic a genius if Colorado is able to advance on the back of solid defending and limiting net-front chances. Josh is capable of replicating all of the good things EJ does on the back end. He isn’t just a big body; he makes the Avalanche harder to play against in front of the net. He is one of the Avalanche players still around from the forty-eight point season and has worked tirelessly to get back on the ice and into playoff action after being injured for the last two appearances. That being said I can see Johnson being swapped for the other Johnson if that choice has to be made. He has become the new Tyson Barrie in getting a ton of flack from fans when he is off his game and praise when his playstyle benefits the Avalanche. Unless his weaknesses glaringly outweigh his upside, I don’t expect him to be a playoff scratch. Erik Johnson is a leader for this squad as I previously mentioned and his G/60 and Defensive EV show that he produces a lot given his ice time. It’s important to stay out of the box to mitigate the impact of your opposition's powerplay abilities. I’d say that Jack Johnson and Bowen Byram are the most likely to get some postseason time. He doesn’t get around like he used to but is still a big-bodied stout defender with tons of experience. Johnson is a crowd favorite and was the first Avalanche to score a goal this season. It’s no secret what Kurtis MacDermid brings to the table, which doesn’t garner him a lot of minutes.

Colorado set new franchise records in regular season wins with 53 and home-ice wins with 29.

To establish new records in the history of Colorado's storied franchise is certainly an accomplishment, but this Avs squad is just focused on bettering themselves with every game, every period, every shift and taking it one moment at a time as they prepare to 'do damage,' as noted by MacKinnon, come the postseason.
