Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Kerins, Nikolayev just keep ... (The Win Column)

Another big week for the Calgary Flames' prospects. Both Ilya Nikolayev and Rory Kerins had at least five points, and both are inside the top 10 in sc.

- William Stromgren and Rogle BK finished fourth in the J20 playoffs. Jakob Pelletier did not record any points this week, but still sits 17th in the league in points. They now play Farjestad in the semis. - Connor Zary picked up a big goal on the power play again this week. They also clinched the Western Division title in the USHL. - Expect him to earn a role in Stockton next year, but probably not on an NHL contract. Cam Whynot has been in and out of the lineup this week, and did not record any points. - Jeremie Poirier is back in the lineup after missing a few games. - Ilya Nikolayev just keeps putting points on the board. Take a look at the goal here: With just three games left in the season, Kerins already sits 169th all-time in points in a single OHL season. All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis ( @Croatis) which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league.

Flames' Valimaki Needs Another Do-Over After Frustrating Season (The Hockey Writers)

After back-to-back disappointing seasons, Juuso Valimaki still has to prove to the Calgary Flames that he belongs in the NHL and not the AHL.

The 2017 first-round draft pick still has plenty of time to prove his worth to this organization and show the hockey world that he belongs in the NHL. If his path requires more seasoning in the AHL just like Kylington’s did, then the Finnish prospect should take his lumps, challenge himself and make the most of his opportunities. I’m sure Valimaki was disappointed that he wasn’t the standout defenceman in his first Flames game in almost five months, but he has done his best to stay positive and not let his current status as an AHLer get in the way of his NHL aspirations. Valimaki has faced a lot of adversity in his career thus far, so I’m confident that he’ll fight to keep his NHL dream alive. However, I think it’s far too early to label the 23-year-old Finn a bust or a player the Flames should simply trade out of town to cut their losses. On Jan. 29, the frustration of a season gone wrong boiled over in a game between the Heat and the Ontario Reign. A couple of weeks after his complaints about being banished to the press box went public, Valimaki found himself on the move and back in the American Hockey League (AHL). After being a healthy scratch for 14 games, the Flames assigned Valimaki to the Stockton Heat on Dec. 2. However, after his lone appearance on the recent west coast road trip, the young defender has once again been a healthy scratch. Speaking with the media after being recalled from the Heat last week, the young Finn put on a brave face and admitted that he has to keep improving to secure a permanent spot on the big club. Playing in his first game since being injured on Jan. 9, Valimaki got into a tussle with Reign captain Brett Sutter after a whistle. By the end of the 2020-21 season, the Finnish defender found himself in head coach Darryl Sutter’s doghouse and a healthy scratch. After the young blueliner signed a two-year, $3.1 million deal with the Calgary Flames late last summer, Valimaki was hoping a fresh start would clear the foul smell of a 2020-21 campaign that saw him start strong, but finish poorly.

'He is as good as anyone': Flames alumni welcome Gaudreau to the ... (Calgary Sun)

Johnny Gaudreau is having a special season — among the best in franchise history.

“They know you can’t let him have any ice, so they’re going to make sure that he’s going to get hit every time. “That’s going to be probably his biggest challenge that he’s faced in his career,” Fleury said. He has earned 79 of his points at even-strength, a new franchise benchmark, and leads the loop with a plus-56 rating. He’s one of only four NHLers to hit 100 points so far this season. If you play with players that can’t score, you’re never going to get it.” They could surely list the power-play personnel, too. “I think you appreciate it more once your career is over because you reflect in a different way,” said Loob, who posted 106 points in 1987-88, also making history as the first Swedish sharpshooter — and, believe it or not, still the only — to score 50 goals on the NHL stage. (Going back to the Atlanta days, Guy Chouinard and Bob MacMillan also soared to these lofty heights.) It’s fitting that his usual linemates, Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm, were first to arrive to congratulate their pal on this rare and remarkable achievement. There’s another level in the game.” Gaudreau is having a special season — among the best in franchise history. ‘Magic Man’ was the original fan favourite for the Calgary Flames. All these years later, he immediately recognized the 403 area code.

Beyond the Boxscore: Calgary Flames channel Davey Jones' heart ... (Flames Nation)

Come from behind victory in the same game Johnny Gaudreau hits the 100-point mark? Poetic in terms of storyline. In actuality the Calgary Flames got run ...

The first two periods saw Seattle take a full 1.2 standard deviations in momentum, one of the worst through 40 for the Flames this year. DailyFaceoff has the tools you need for both daily and season-long fantasy leagues, including a lineup optimizer, daily projections, and a whole lot more. Their record is close to the bottom of the league standings but i wouldn’t be surprised to see them bounce towards a playoff race next season. Matty Beniers (2.01 // 2.01) had himself an impressive debut for the Kraken. That extra year of development looks to have made him stronger than your usual fresh out of the draft rookie. Mikael Backlund (8.36%) had a season worst performance and struggled to even get the puck to the offensive zone. Props to the Kraken they’ve actually been one of the better teams this year at limiting defensive chances, but their goaltending has largely let them down when they needed it. Other players down in the pits include Toffoli (24.55%) and Jarnkrok (25.62%). They rallied and one the third period and are on the precipice of officially clinching a playoff spot Thursday. He was maybe one of the best players on this past road trip in terms of play but tonight he just wasn’t seemingly at that same level. Calgary used special teams and a big goal from Mangiapane to bust through and win the third period and the game. Noah Hanifin (44.93%) and Chris Tanev (50.74%) were the lower half of the D pairs from the previous section. Corsi King – Elias Lindholm (61.43 CF%) easily had the most corsi events for Flames players getting over 16.

Matty Beniers Shines in Debut as Kraken Fall 5-3 to Flames (The Hockey Writers)

Although the Seattle Kraken fell to the Calgary Flames 5-3, there were plenty of positives including Matty Beniers debut.

Despite the loss, there are a lot of positive takeaways from this game and it shows they are capable of competing with one of the top teams in the NHL. This was a good first game for him as he was able to demonstrate that not only can he play in the NHL, but he has the potential to be one of the top players in the league one day. Adam is excited to be joining The Hockey Writers as part of the Seattle Kraken and Vancouver Canucks team. They have given up 93 third-period goals this season which is the fourth-most in the NHL. They are also tied for the most regulation losses when leading after two periods with four. Later in the first, he registered his first career assist off a beautiful cross-ice pass to Ryan Donato. His final statistics were one assist, one shot, one hit, 42 percent in the faceoff dot and one takeaway in 17:10 of ice time. The Seattle Kraken fell to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night 5-3.

Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Sutter headline Flames fifth straight win (Flame for Thought)

After a distinctly underwhelming first two frames, the Flames turned it on in the third for a 5-3 comeback win over the Kraken, their fifth in a row.

His assist on Matthew Tkachuk’s third period power-play marker made him the first Flame since Theo Fleury in 1992-1993 to net 100 points in a campaign. Darryl Sutter can take a large portion of credit for making the goaltending switch when he did. It was the second time the Flames have come back to win when trailing after two periods, improving that particular mark to 2-12-2.

Vegas needs the points and the Flames have the opportunity to bury them. Heading into the game he had one marker in his last 19 games. Instead, he fakes the shot and sends it to Noah Hanifin who blasts it home for Flames goal number four. Hanifin-Andersson seem to be the only unchanged line. Markstrom got the third period off after allowing two goals on seven shots against in the second. While his skating isn’t back to early season form, it’s good to see him adapt a bit. Yesterday he had a prime opportunity to tee up a classic kill shot on the power play. He was picked 1st overall in 2007 and plays for the Blackhawks. Patrick Kane.Speaking of Former College Stars Expect more seam passes next time the Flames play the Kraken. His pass to Ryan Donato to open the scoring was about as receivable as it gets. Chucky tops the comeback with an empty netter for the hat trick. Six points in his last two games.

Tkachuk scores three, Gaudreau passes 100-point mark as Flames ... (Toronto Star)

CALGARY - Johnny Gaudreau's major milestone sparked a big third period comeback for the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

Notes: In addition to Fleury (twice), Calgary’s other 100-point seasons came from Kent Nilsson (twice), Joe Mullen, Hakan Loob, Al MacInnis and Mike Bullard... Calgary C Calle Jarnkrok (non-COVID illness) returned after missing five games. He then spent the night centring the club’s top line with Donato and Jordan Eberle. The Kraken return home after Wednesday’s game in Winnipeg was postponed due to a winter storm. Win the third period, you’re going to win hockey games.“ His return bumped Ryan Carpenter to the press box... ”They’re not always going to be great, but you’ve got to try and win the third period. Tkachuk turned to Gaudreau and gave him a big hug after the milestone point as the Saddledome crowd roared. “I was playing with two great players. “I was excited about how it went,” said Beniers, 19. “I’m sure my mom and dad were pretty excited. It was a big one.” “It’s cool,” said Gaudreau. “I just made a little pass down to Chucky and he tried to go seam to (Elias Lindholm) and it bounced right back to him and fired it in the net.
