Canucks Have a Window of Opportunity for Postseason Berth (The Hockey Writers)

The Vancouver Canucks have had a rollercoaster of a regular season. It started back in the offseason with a blockbuster trade with the Arizona Coyotes, ...

There’s a saying out there, “kill two birds with one stone”, and that’s the idea for Vancouver’s final stretch of games. With big injury news to the Los Angeles Kings and the logjam of teams vying for a wildcard position, there’s not only a chance to sneak into said wildcard spot but potentially third in the Pacific Division. They’ve gone from comfortably second in the Pacific Division to third, and just three points up on the Golden Knights and six on Vancouver. If the Kings continue to slide in the standings, vying for third in the Pacific division may be more attainable than the final wild card position. Now, it’s unlikely Vancouver sweeps the rest of the season and goes 8-0, but going 6-2 puts them at 94 points. The Canucks have had to face this reality already, with Boeser out indefinitely after suffering an injury back on April 3rd. The Vancouver Canucks have had a rollercoaster of a regular season.

I Watched This Game: Quinn Hughes' clutch overtime goal keeps Canucks alive (Vancouver Is Awesome)

Facing the Vegas Golden Knights, the Vancouver Canucks picked up their fourth-straight win with 3 points from Elias Pettersson and an overtime winner by Quinn Hughes. The 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks are basically the villain from a slasher movie. Just when ...

That gave Hughesall the time in the worldto wait out Lehner and backhand the puck into the top of the net. That was the only thing I was thinking of, trying to have a good shift.” Jonathan Marchessault threw a puck towards the net and Horvat made the poor decision to try to knock it down with his stick in front of Demko, instead tipping it down like he was trying to score. - That save loomed large when Theodore drilled a one-timer past Demko in the final minute of regulation. Garland made a fantastic play below the goal line to shake free of two defenders and set up Pettersson for a point-blank chance, but Lehner turned him aside. One of those pucks, off the stick of Mattias Janmark, was going well wide when it hit Alec Martinez right in the breadbasket and went in the net. - In a season full of lousy starts, the Canucks jumped out to a great one in this game. - It was a remarkably efficient power play, with all five members of the first unit touching the puck in seven seconds to set up the shot. Thatcher Demko, however, was stupendous and time after time stymied the stars of the Golden Knights, including an outrageous stop on a backdoor chance for Jack Eichel. - I joked about the Canucks being like a slasher villain for the Golden Knights, but really it’s just Demko. He killed them in the playoff bubble, destroying their confidence, even when the Golden Knights managed to eliminate the Canucks. In this game, he was back for the sequel, making 41 saves on 45 shots. At least, that has to be the perspective of the Vegas Golden Knights, who are attempting to make a push for the playoffs right now. That was the Canucks’ third-straight loss and ninth loss in their last 12 games.

Quinn Hughes scores early in OT, Canucks top Golden Knights (Fox News)

There were times in the third period Tuesday night when Vancouver Canucks head coach Bruce Boudreau felt like a cartoon rabbit.

The Canucks captain ripped a snap shot, beating Lehner for his 31st goal of the season. "You can’t lose the special teams battle 2-0 and expect to win any game, so that’s probably the first place we got to clean up." He appeared poised to shoot in tight, but instead sent a no-look pass across the slot to Richardson, who tapped it in. "We know where we are in the standings and where we are," Hughes said. Vegas defenseman Zach Whitecloud pushed it over the goal line with his skate. Lehner made the stop, then fell backward with the puck falling between his legs. "Obviously proud of the way the guys battled back," Martinez said. There’s something that we need to tighten up, some things we need to work on but we just got to focus on next game." And we’re just thinking about the next one." Elias Pettersson had goal and a pair of assists for the Canucks in regulation. Bo Horvat had a goal and an assist. We’re still behind, we’ve still got to win games.

In many ways, Tuesday's win represented the kind of game we thought we'd see more often from the Canucks this season.

Canucks’ playoff chances hanging on by a thread, Horvat gave the Canucks early life. Sure, they don’t have the backend talent or sufficient depth to control the game against an all-in team like Vegas. Well, one thing we’ve learned from the bubble is that Horvat is clutch.

Vancouver took a two-goal cushion 79 seconds earlier when Garland sprang Pettersson for a breakaway and the star forward fired a laser on net. I think we’re gonna have to be better than that down the stretch in order to get where we want to go,” he said. “Our second period was great but our third period, when you’re playing a good team, you can’t sit back,” the coach said. “We know where we are in the standings and where we are,” Hughes said. “Obviously proud of the way the guys battled back,” Martinez said. The result moved Vancouver within three points of Vegas, with both teams grasping for a playoff spot. “And usually that lesson costs you and it didn’t cost us tonight. “Well, we’ll take the point. “We feel pretty good now, we’ve won four in a row. The defenceman picked up the rebound from Conor Garland’s shot in front of the Vegas net and waited patiently for goalie Robin Lehner to drop flat to the ice before putting a shot up and over his pad into the wide-open net.

Tuesday April 12 - Vancouver Canucks 5, Vegas Golden Knights 4 (OT) Thursday April 14 - Vancouver Canucks vs. Arizona Coyotes - 7 p.m. PT

Karel Vejmelka has made the last two starts for Arizona after the Canucks lit up Harri Sateri in his Coyotes debut last week, but that hasn't improved matters. After that hot stretch in early March, where they won six out of seven games, injuries have now caught up to Arizona in a big way. He finished with seven goals and 19 points in 68 KHL games with SKA St. Petersburg. As for Podkolzin, coach Boudreau and a number of the players have been piling praise onto the young Russian's shoulders over the last few days. The Coyotes traded for the rights to NCAA forwards Jack McBain and Nathan Smith at last month's deadline, and both centres made their pro debuts against the Devils on Tuesday. Arizona management is hoping that the pair will be important core pieces for the club to build around, going forward. The goal was Horvat's 31st of the year — and 14th in his last 17 games. He's two goals away from tying his career high (28) and seven points away from his career high in that category (66). Tuesday was also a big night for Elias Pettersson, who led the Canucks with three points. They've got Vegas now with 35.3% odds, and the Canucks at 5.7%, based on a final total of 91 points. So the Canucks wake up Wednesday morning still six points out of both third place in the Pacific and the second wild-card spot, and seven points out of Wild Card 1. He gave up four on Tuesday but once again, it was a 45-shot night. Vegas is also on the outside looking in — three points ahead of Vancouver and three behind Dallas and L.A.

With 55 points in 68 games, Hughes, 22, is within striking range of two single-season franchise marks for points and assists by a defenceman.

Boudreau believes there’s untapped goal potential in Hughes, especially with the way today’s game is played. And he needs seven assists to pass a record 55 established in the 1976-77 season by Dennis Kearns. He’s within striking range of two long-standing franchise marks for points and assists by a defenceman in a single season. “The best first pass, and it’s always on the tape,” Boudreau said Wednesday. “His evasiveness is real good and the smoothness in which he gets away from players I find amazing. Harsunder breaks down the best and worst of the last 2 Canucks games as well as a concluding thought in his 37th feature of the Pro-Con-Clusion series.

Had it not been for Thatcher Demko’s phenomenal efforts in turning aside 41 shots last night and constantly bailing out the Ohio product, Miller’s casual defensive play may have even changed the outcome of the game altogether. With that, let’s take a look at 1 pro and 1 con, as well as a concluding thought before the Canucks take to the ice against the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday in hopes of extending their winning streak to 5 games. That is exactly what the Canucks did, as after they went 2-0 on their short road trip a few days ago, the Canucks extended their winning streak to 4 games with a 4-2 win against the Sharks on Saturday and a 5-4 overtime win against the Golden Knights on Tuesday.
