Ontario is reporting the highest number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in nearly two months and five net new virus-related deaths on Tuesday.

The ministry says 64 per cent of ICU patients were admitted for COVID-19 and 36 per cent were admitted for other reasons and subsequently tested positive for the virus. I don't know if that's going to be enough to change enough people's behavior. “Just because there's no legal obligation to wear a mask, you still should be wearing a mask, and we've heard it from the top. Among the latest hospitalizations, 190 are in intensive care, compared to 173 this time a week ago. To date, 90 per cent of Ontarians aged five years and older have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, 86 per cent have received two doses and 51 per cent have received three doses. Forty-five per cent of hospital patients were admitted to hospital for COVID-19-related reasons and 55 per cent were admitted for other reasons but also tested positive for the virus, according to the ministry.

Ontario is expanding access to COVID-19 antiviral treatments for high-risk people as officials "strongly recommend" wearing masks in all indoor settings.

The BA.2 subvariant is now the dominant strain in the latest wave of the pandemic, the document says. Eighty-two patients are on ventilators due to the virus. The medication is in pill form, taken twice a day for five days. Last week, the province expanded eligibility for fourth doses of a COVID-19 vaccine to those 60 and older, as well as Indigenous residents and adult members of their household. The report also warns that the number of Ontario children experiencing severe illness from COVID-19 is likely to increase given the increased transmissibility of the BA.2 subvariant of the virus, the removal of public health measures and the limited vaccine eligibility and two-dose coverage in those under the age of 12. Asked Monday about reintroducing masks in schools given the data outlined in the report, Moore said "we have not seen any significant threat to the health of children." Paxlovid is for adults who have mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19 in the early days of infection and who have a high risk of deteriorating into severe illness and requiring hospitalization. A positive result on a PCR or rapid test is required to be assessed for antiviral treatment, and it must be started within five days of the onset of symptoms. "That is something that we will await [the top doctors'] guidance on and if it's a requirement that they recommend that we return to mask wearing, we will." It proposes bringing back indoor masking and extending masking mandates in high-risk settings as possible elements of a "layered" strategy to mitigate a surge in cases. In the meantime, he said it's important for people to self-screen, test for symptoms, and get vaccinated. While Moore said the province will not be reintroducing a mask mandate in indoor settings at this time, he said Ontarians should be prepared for those measures to return if a new variant of concern emerges, if the health-care system is threatened due to rising cases, or potentially during the winter months.

The overall volume of flight searches to South Africa for the same period is up by 30 per cent. The city is reporting more than 140 cases per day, a fraction of what it saw at the height of the omicron surge, and hospitalizations remain low. 9:55 a.m. When Ontario launched its rapid testing program in the fall of 2020, Premier Doug Ford touted the swabs as “game changers” in the pandemic battle. He compared the court order granted to the government in May 2021 to other public health measures imposed by the province. Peterborough Regional Health Centre had 26 admitted patients with the virus as of Friday as outbreaks on Unit A5 and Unit C2 continue. The changes come as a sixth wave of COVID-19 is causing an estimated 100,000 infections daily. Justice James Chipman ruled at the time that a challenge to the original court order was moot because the injunction had been lifted. While the order was aimed at two anti-mask protests, its reached extended to all public gatherings and it also banned their promotion on social media. Last week, the UK Health Security Agency said BA.4 had been traced in South Africa, Scotland, England, Botswana and Denmark between Jan. 10 to March 30.
