The three-alarm fire broke out on Abbott Street on Monday morning and crews on the scene say several residents have been rescued from the building.

It is not known how the fire broke out or the current conditions of the people who were injured. Smoke could be seen billowing from the top floors and out of the fire escape on the roof. Three people were injured in a fire in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood Monday.

Posts on social media show smoke billowing out of a building near the intersection of Abbott and Water streets and over the city skyline around 11 a.m..

Numerous people had to be pulled from the fire, according to tweets from Vancouver Fire Chief Karen Fry, and around 70 people were displaced, according to public safety minister Mike Farnworth. The Vancouver Police Department is asking drivers to avoid the area and Chief Fry has recommended that nearby residents close their windows to avoid “toxic smoke.” Multiple occupants have been rescued from a large-scale structure fire in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood Monday (April 11) morning.

Police are advising drivers to avoid Vancouver's Gastown area due to a structural, three-alarm fire that is causing smoke to fill the sky.

Hotel Winters resident Nicole told V.I.A. that a dog and a cat on the third floor did not make it out of the building. Views from the studio look a bit different today. Other residents were rescued with smoke inhalation but the fire chief was unaware if they were taken to hospital. Nicole was able to get her own pets, a cat and a rat, safely out of the building. She lives on the third floor and opened her door after she smelled smoke; there were no alarms. "No reported firefighter injuries at this time and two people have been transported to hospital."

At least three people have been hurt after a serious fire in the Gastown area of Vancouver on Monday, according to Vancouver Fire Rescue Services.

The building is 150 years old, most likely, and it's a brick building so we're taking every precaution that we can to keep our firefighters safe. We don't know if there's anybody [left] in the building and we probably won't know that until we get the fire out," Fry said. "Me and a tenant almost got it out [but] the fire extinguisher went dry. Residents downtown have been told to close their windows. Others were treated for minor injuries at the scene. Vancouver Fire Chief Karen Fry said "upwards of a handful" of people who lived in the building were missing.
