Sweden defeats Canada for gold at men's curling worlds (TSN)

LAS VEGAS — Canada's Brad Gushue didn't mince words after settling for silver on Sunday at the world men's curling championship.

"The ice was just so bad that it became a coin toss on every rock," Gushue said. Without Olympic silver medallist Bruce Mouat of Scotland in the field, Canada and Sweden were heavy favourites to make the final. "It's embarrassing for a player of my calibre to see two shots that far off when I'm really only taking six inches different ice," Gushue said. "Every shot that we threw was a guess," Gushue said. "Niklas made more than we did and deserved to win. Gushue said there were two distinct ridges on the ice in his semifinal win a day earlier. "They could have beat us on good ice. "Pardon my language, but what the (expletive) just happened?" But not in a world championship." Edin, who won his first Olympic gold this season, kept the pressure on. "Just the worst ice I've ever curled on in a major championship," he said. He forced Gushue to draw for one in the fifth end and scored two in the sixth after Gushue could only clear one stone on a double-takeout attempt.

After a deuce and steal in subsequent ends, Italy answered one the sixth by the Americans with a whopping count of six in the seventh end. The Italians set the tone in the first end, when skip Retornaz put his last stone through a port to score four, before the U.S. rebounded for two in the second and a steal of one in the third. That came a year after Team Gushue took gold over Edin in the 4-2 championship draw in Edmonton. But it didn’t do the job and gave Team Gushue just one to tie the game 5-5. Then came a ninth end that turned the game in Sweden’s favour. Sweden then went on to win the gold medal over Great Britain’s Bruce Mouat. When you’re in moments like this where it’s down to one sheet in a world championship, you want to go out and display what you’re able to do and make some shots and get the crowd roaring.” And this week has just been bang your head against the wall with how bad the ice has been.” It just took away a great experience for both of us. And I feel that decided the game (Sunday night), not the quality of the teams on the ice.” “Just shocked and disappointed at the conditions. “You had to guess at what it was going to do.

The Canadians were looking for a big score, but Gushue’s raise only produced one point to level the game at 5-5. Swedish lead Christoffer Sundgren went down with a bad hip during the playoffs, which saw alternate Daniel Magnusson pressed into action. “We’re very happy,” said Edin. “That game was very tough, difficult conditions to play on, so I’m really happy that we could fight as hard as we did, and really try to figure out every spot. “I’m disappointed that a really cool experience was taken away from our team. Gushue captured the 2017 crown while Edin defeated Canada in 2018. There were seven stones clustered around the four-foot rings when Gushue came to play his last shot.
