Gameday preview: Canucks vs Sharks (April 9) (The Canuck Way)

The Vancouver Canucks take on the San Jose Sharks on Hockey Night in Canada at Rogers Arena. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM Pacific Time.

On Friday, it was announced General Manager Doug Wilson was resigning after 19 years at the helm. The Canucks are still trying to keep their slim playoff hopes alive and will look for a third straight win. Vancouver beat San Jose 5-2 on December 17th and 5-4 in overtime on February 17.

On a night when neither Miller nor Pettersson cracked the scoresheet, the Canucks needed a foursome of depth scorers to soldier their way past the Sharks ...

“It feels good, you know, at this time of the year to feel good about your game,” the winger, a Stanley Cup winner with the Washington Capitals in 2018, said after the game. “But when you've got guys contributing on different nights, that's how you win games this time of the year. But certain nights, if you can get a goal or two from some different guys, depth players, it obviously makes an impact.” Four of Chiasson’s 10 goals this season have been in the last five games. It kind of went back and forth like that. And Schenn, the stay-at-home defenceman whose last goal was two months ago, added a final-second empty-netter as Vancouver manufactured a win against sloppy San Jose.

CanucksArmy post game: Chiasson scores again as Canucks win ... (Canucks Army)

Saturday night marked yet another night where Alex Chiasson proved his value to the Vancouver Canucks — but more on that later.

“You never give up and you go as hard as you can for as long as you can. “That same year, we had to win the last seven, and we won the last seven. “He played really good,” said Boudreau. “He was stickhandling, making moves, passes, and I think had a little bit of bad luck. Garland opened up his hips for a split-second to give the impression he was going to pass, then seemingly just as fast, let go of a snap shot that beat Kahkonen short side. Two minutes for cross-checking — Sharks to the power play. “But we sort of grinded it out, found a way. On the play, Ryan Merkley took a hit from Kyle Burroughs that had him woozy. The math isn’t in their favour but the team certainly isn’t giving up hope as they look to just keep taking it one game at a time and try to make things as interesting as possible. Oliver Ekman-Larsson blocked shots galore late, and with 40 seconds left, Myers was called for a cross-checking penalty in front of the Canucks’ goal after a whistle, and thankfully, the Canucks managed to kill off the remaining 38 seconds of the game and come away with the victory. As if he was asking the Canucks to take a two-goal lead, Noah Gregor took a holding penalty and sent the Canucks back to the man-advantage with just under nine minutes remaining in the second. Elias Pettersson walked in from the circle to Kahkonen’s left and wired a wrist shot that caught the outside of the post, and that would be the Canucks’ best chance of the power play — perhaps their best chance of the period, even. It was a tough scene, and it was one that Tyler Myers clearly hated to see, as after the goal had gone in, he hopped over the boards to try to assist the injured Sharks player.

LIVE: Gulls Drop Second Game Of Weekend Series | San Diego Gulls (sandiegogulls.com)

By AJ Manderichio/SanDiegoGulls.com. The San Diego Gulls fell to the Abbotsford Canucks 5-2 in tonight's game at Abbotsford Centre.

The forward one-timed the shot through DiPietro for his second goal of the game and his 16th of the season. He found the oncoming Drew with a no-look pass, and the forward whipped a wrist shot past Michael DiPietro for his 15th goal of the season. Elvenes and Limoges moved the puck low in the offensive zone, with the latter collecting it behind the Abbotsford net. The team eliminated any prime scoring opportunities and held the Canucks to just two shots during the extended man advantage. They hold the final Calder Cup Playoff spot, sitting 12 points ahead of the Tucson Roadrunners. Sautner followed up at 8:08 of the period, crashing the net and potting the rebound of a Danila Klimovich shot for his third goal of the season.

Alex Chiasson has been everything and more than the Canucks ... (Canucks Army)

When the Canucks signed Alex Chiasson to a professional tryout contract before the season started, there were few expectations for the journeyman forward.

His power play prowess and ability to play alongside stars are both valuable skills that the Canucks could use from a depth piece. While he’s not a difference-maker, he has been a solid bottom-six option that has also contributed to the power play. With seven points in his last five games, Chiasson has been playing some of his best hockey of the season. Chiasson has been one of the most productive Canucks over the last few games and has seen his ice time increase because of it. While there have been ups and downs for Chiasson on the first power play unit this season, recently, something has clicked. He’s known around the league as a productive power play option and played the net-front role for a historically-strong Edmonton Oilers unit only a few years ago.

I Watched This Game: Chiasson continues hot streak to lead ... (Vancouver Is Awesome)

With another multi-point night, Alex Chiasson gave the Vancouver Canucks the edge they needed to beat the San Jose Sharks and stay in the playoff hunt.

He’s certainly gaining a lot of confidence and I’m gaining a lot of confidence in him.” Fortunately, Horvat got the puck right back and his attempted pass to Oliver Ekman-Larsson deflected back to Chiasson. Left alone like Kevin McAllister, Chiassonblowtorched a burglar’s head, which is a brand new euphemism for putting the puck off the post and in. It was a simple shot and a rebound, with Tyler Myers taking a moment too long to rotate to the front of the net to tie up Tomas Hertl’s stick. You watch him from when he got here in training camp and didn’t speak a whole lot of English. He’s been put in an environment where he’s the only Russian on the team. I think it’s a little bit of bad luck, this stuff next year will be going in the net for him. On a 2-on-1, he took advantage of an over-aggressive Kaapo Kahkonen by pulling the puck around the goaltender and tucking it inside the post like he was mailing a letter. - Vasily Podkolzin was once again held off the scoresheet but he was buzzing all game and you can feel a breakout coming. It’s not just that the Canucks have to go on a run over the final 9 games of the season; at least two other teams have to falter badly. Sometimes a team comes back from a 5-0 deficit in the third period to win the game in overtime. - Jason Dickinson has been a disappointment this season but he opened the scoring with a marvelous bit of skill. Because maybe, just maybe, this is one of those special moments when the improbable actually happens and you wouldn’t want to miss that. Sometimes a team can go from barely avoiding relegation to winning the Premier League. Sometimes a 16 seed in March Madness upsets a 1 seed.

Alex Chiasson had a goal and an assist for the Vancouver Canucks in a 4-2 win against the San Jose Sharks at Rogers Arena on Saturday.

"It was good to see." We got to find a way to win some hockey games. Found a way and got great goaltending." It was the first goal in 21 games, dating to Jan. 11 for Dickinson, who had also missed 16 games since his last goal because of injuries. "It's a nice opportunity for myself to showcase what I can do."
