We had a lot of fun times off the rink and that’s what kept me excited to be there and to win a championship, which we ended up doing.” He was a member of Fargo’s 2018 USHL title team, and played with Meyers there. McKay has been the Mavericks everyday goalie for the past three years and has posted an impressive 34 shutouts in his career. Maybe the biggest surprise of the event came when former New York Rangers and Wisconsin star Mike Richter announced that Devon Levi of Northeastern had won the award which bears Richter’s name, given to college hockey’s top goalie. He acknowledged that it’s hard for a goalie to win this award, up against forwards and the eye-popping things they often do with the puck. There’s always going to be somebody who’s thought of as better than you, or whatever it may be,” said Dryden McKay, who is a free agent.

For me, again, he goes about his business, and I’m proud of the way he handles things both positively and negatively.” He also was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award for the second consecutive season but lost to Northeastern’s Devon Levi earlier on Friday. McKay easily repeated as the conference goaltending champion this year in the CCHA, a year after he tied Tony Esposito as the only player to win the WCHA goaltending title three different times. The one that’s unique about our sport is that what’s between the ears and what’s in your chest and body is hard to put on paper. McKay, a finalist in 2021, is the first player since Harvard’s Jimmy Vesey to win the award in his second season as a Hobey Hat Trick finalist. His 113 wins rank second all-time, and he joined Michigan’s Marty Turco and Steve Shields as the only goaltenders with 100 career wins.

After that game, several NHL teams are expected to try to sign McKay. His numbers throughout his four-year college career have been nothing short of stellar (a 1.45 GAA, a .932 SV%, and 34 shutouts in 139 games). While he’s a bit small compared to a lot of goalies nowadays as teams tend to prefer taller netminders – McKay stands 6’0 – this is a player that many should be willing to make an exception for. Minnesota State goaltender Dryden McKay didn’t take home the Mike Richter Award for the best goaltender in college hockey on Friday (Northeastern’s Devon Levi, a Buffalo prospect, got the nod there as well as the Tim Taylor Award for Rookie of the Year). However, he earned an even bigger award as the NCAA announced ( Twitter link) that the netminder has won the Hobey Baker Award which is presented annually to the most outstanding men’s college hockey player in the United States. He beat out Minnesota center Ben Meyers and Denver winger Bobby Brink (a Philadelphia prospect) for the honor.
