The Leafs have scored 16 goals in their last three games and the Habs have scored 14. I’m taking the Leafs in the first period. The Leafs know that they haven’t played their best against Montreal this season, so I think there will be an emphasis on how they start this game. The Leafs aren’t great in their own end, but they are much better defensively than Montreal. Toronto ranks 17th in defensive proficiency as they are allowing 3.07 goals against per game. Montreal is averaging 0.68 goals for and 1.23 against. I think the Leafs will take care of them on home ice. As good as the Toronto Maple Leafs have been this season, for some reason whenever the meet the Canadiens, they struggle to find ways to beat them. The Leafs’ power-play has been their biggest threat this season and they will look to take advantage of Montreal having the fourth-worst penalty killing unit. Marner has also had an incredible year, with 31 goals and 58 assists for 89 points in 62 games. They currently have a 56% expected goals rate and are averaging 3.83 gpg. The Canadiens haven’t had a great season, but they‘ve found their scoring touch in the second half. The total opened up at 7 and hasn’t had any movement.
In the seven games since the Leafs last played Montreal, they won six of them and lost a seventh in OT. Ironically, the game against Montreal that they lost was ...
I don’t expect everyone to agree, and I don’t presume to know more than the coach. Let’s just finally admit that a fourth line filled with speed and hungry talent is going to be way more helpful. - Giordano should be paired with Liljegren. In the games without Lilly, Gio has looked like an aging ex-star. At no time should Kampf be killing the offense of one of your elite players. With Lilly he looks like a #1 in his prime. Tonight’s game is pretty much just an exhibition game, but there is still one very important reason to tune in:

There is lots to continue to play for there, but most importantly, I just want to make sure we are getting our game right and we feel like we’ve been trending in the right direction for a while. I would say the lack of practice time and the pace of the schedule is the greatest challenge because you can’t really get a hold of things, but if you recall, a lot of my focus at that time was to just get the team feeling good, confident, positive, and believing in themselves and believing in what we were doing For [Matthews] to do something like that and to have that chance is pretty remarkable. We were a team that at the time was outside the playoffs but certainly had great expectations to make its way to the playoffs. That’s what I see in terms of potential and where we can get to in order to take another step as a hockey team. In terms of when we think about the best is yet to come, he’s leading our team to new heights. We got a little bit of a taste of that when he got 50 here. The only change comes on the fourth line, where Spezza will draw in and Abruzzese will be a healthy scratch. Keeping the puck out is more the question he and the Leafs are looking to answer after allowing 21 goals in their last six games. Now, Toronto is in a position to clinch a playoff spot with a win against a team that has given them problems this season; the Montreal Canadiens. However, they haven’t exactly played fantastic hockey at five on five, where they have a CF% of just 42.7 — last in the league– and an xGF% of 43.1, which is third last. Caufield rides into Toronto on a three-game goal streak, closing in on the 20-goal and 40-point plateaus as the end of his rookie season draws near.

The Toronto Maple Leafs clinched a playoff spot with their 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night.
Montembault came up with a couple nice stops to keep the score at 2-0 early in the second before Montreal got on the board. He's such a good guy off the ice and he's such an exceptional player.'' "You get chills in your bones,'' Matthews said with a grin. Cole Caufield and Joel Edmundson replied for Montreal (20-41-11). Jake Allen stopped the first 14 shots he faced before leaving with an apparent leg injury as he stretched in vain for Matthews' first. He's one of the best players to ever play. "I couldn't be happier for him. "He had some really nice words,'' Matthews said. Caufield made an incredible play to keep the puck in at the Leafs' blue line to extend a sequence that eventually saw Edmundson score his second at 5:58. Matthews is now on pace for 67 goals in his 77-game season— he missed three contests with a wrist injury and two via suspension— and could become the first player to score 65 since Alex Ovechkin in 2007-08. "He's doing something special right now,'' said defenceman Morgan Rielly, Toronto's longest serving player. Matthews was surprised to be honoured during Saturday's first TV timeout for eclipsing Vaive. He rose to his skates on the bench, tapped his chest and acknowledged to the adoring crowd at Scotiabank Area. Matthews extended his point streak to 16 games (21 goals, 10 assists) as the Leafs clinched a playoff spot for the sixth straight season and reached 100 points in the standings with 10 contests left on the schedule.

Auston Matthews' scoring has secured a spot for the Maple Leafs in the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs.
Kallgren made 24 saves in his ninth NHL game, running his record to 5-2-1. Just 27 seconds after beating Allen, Matthews fooled Montembeault with a low wrist shot at 13:59. “He had some really nice words,” Matthews said. “It feels good,” defenceman Morgan Rielly said of booking a spot in the post-season tournament. The Leafs, now 47-19-6, reached 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history. No NHL player had scored 50 in a 50-game span since 1995-96, when superstar Mario Lemieux did it for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He is 23 years of age, and the likelihood that he has a successful pro career is not a lock. It was 1-0 Minnesota State over Denver in the third period at the time of publishing. All he needed was to draft 15th in what is one of the greatest thefts of the last decade if Caufield’s small sample size stays true. It’s the first time that a player has managed the feat at any point in a season since 1996 with Mario Lemieux. It would be shocking, really, if this were the only time in his career that he was able to sustain this type of scoring rate. Drouin has a lot to prove next season, and if he doesn’t, it will be quite interesting to see where the future takes him. Perhaps just a little bit of a slow down is in the cards, because if this is the true pace of the rookie Canadiens winger, then this is one heck of a hockey player. Perhaps this segment of Caufield’s play is special, and he can’t sustain this over a full season at the age of 21. If he is not a 50-goal scorer in the league, surely he is a 40-goal scorer. If you extrapolate that 17 in 27 over an 82-game season, Caufield is a 50 goal scorer. This might just be who he is under Martin St. Louis, and there is no great slow down in his scoring to come. There was finally a full house for an original six Saturday night match-up, and the fans were in fine form, loving the Canadiens’ 4-2 win over their arch-rival Maple Leafs.
