Box Office: 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' Races to $6.3 Million in Thursday ... (Variety)

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' debuted to $6.3 million in Thursday previews, enough to hold off Michael Bay's "Ambulance."

“Ambulance” struggled in previews, netting a paltry $700,000. Paramount’s “ Sonic the Hedgehog 2” opened to a sterling $6.3 million in Thursday previews, as the video game adaptation looks to outrace “Morbius” and “The Batman” at the box office. “Sonic Part Deux” should bow to $55 million or more.

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' Review: This chili dog isn't very spicy (Vanyaland)

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' is two hours and two minutes long, which is approximately 42 minutes longer than any film about Sonic should be.

There’s an amusing sequence where Marsden attends his sister-in-law’s wedding in Hawaii and causes havoc, and after he derails the ceremony by helping Sonic and Tails teleport there, along with a whole bunch of snow from an avalanche they’re trying to escape, every member of the wedding party reveals themselves to be a federal agent, trying to catch Sonic. The groom, the caterers, even the officiant (who opens his bible to reveal a gun): all are there for this goofy purpose, and her stunned reaction to this too-good-to-be-true occasion falling apart is genuinely amusing. Only Knuckles’ characterization insulates Elba from the branded flippancy that make Sonic 2 such a frustrating experience, and that problem doesn’t just stop with the cartoons. They are still a strange fusion of live-action realism and stylized video game character design (though not as spine-tinglingly horrifying as they could have been, to the world’s eternal loss), and it extends to the live-action characters as well. When he’s leaning into the bizarre madness of the character he’s crafted (which bears little resemblance to the Dr. Robotnik that ’90s kids grew up with on the Saturday morning cartoon), it succeeds as intended, and the moments that he and Elba share — mirroring the “fish out of water” dynamic between Marsden and Schwartz in the first film — are occasionally funny, including one scene in which Knuckles, trapped on a cliffside and preparing to fight the villain’s drones, discovers that they’ve simply formed a path for him to climb back up to solid ground: “Ah, they’re… stairs.” But, immediately following that moment, worth a slight chuckle, Carrey flosses (the Fortnite dance, not dental hygiene), and we’re back to square one. He manages to make an energy burst from one of Sonic’s quills, which summons Knuckles (Idris Elba), a warrior from a tribe of Echinedas on the Hedgehog’s home planet, and the pair decide to team up in order to fulfill their various goals: Eggman wants to kill Sonic (though one wonders why Carrey didn’t go full “What’s Opera, Doc?” and sing “Kill the Hedgehog” to Wagner), and Knuckles wants to get his gloved hands on the Master Emerald, which is basically the One Ring and the Infinity Gauntlet if it were merged into the most boring possible form. Tails, as performed by O’Shaughnessy (who voices him in the games), is remarkably bland, with the earnestness endemic to this kind of voice work being an ill-fitting attempt to add anime-style whole-heartedness to an enterprise to a fundamentally post-modern western perspective. Sonic 2 picks up where you think it would: Dr. Robotnik/Eggman (Jim Carrey), whose name is either depending on the scene, is still trapped on Mushroom World after his misadventures with the blue hedgehog in the last film, trying to find a way back to Earth while also seeking to make the best form of mushroom-based coffee that he can.

Box Office: 'Sonic 2' Races To Huge $6.2 Million Thursday (Forbes)

Paramount and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog 2, starring James Marsden, Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz and Idris Elba, earned a whopping $6.2 million in preview ...

I’m choosing optimism because that’s what the tea leaves say, but this is a $110 million flick that’s already earned $30 million overseas and should play for weeks and weeks due to the lack of explicitly kid-friendly biggies between now and (depending on your definition) Jurassic World: Dominion (which certainly seems to be selling “adventure” over “horror”) on June 10 or Lightyear on June 17. The R-rated actioner, about two bank robbers hijacking an occupied ambulance, stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Yayha Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzalez, and is a return to smaller ($40 million) grounded action for the Michael Bay. It’s quite good, if overlong and redundant in that third act (ironically the same issue I had with RRR and Everything Everywhere All At Once), and I’m hoping those constantly complain about adult-skewing, non-franchise, “new-to-you” star vehicles will show up this weekend. For the record, I don’t want to set the stage for “disappointment” if the film “only” opens with $50-$55 million this weekend. Offhand, if it legs like Uncharted ($3.7 million/$44 million) or Jumanji: The Next Level ($4.7 million/$59 million), then Sonic 2 is looking at a $73-$77 million opening weekend. That’s double the $3 million earned by the first Sonic in its preview frame back in mid-February of 2020. Yes, there is always a danger that even well-received kid-targeted blockbusters (like The LEGO Movie) can spawn “adults were only curious the first time” sequels.

'Sonic 2' Isn't on Disney Plus, but Here's Where It Will Stream (CNET)

The Sonic sequel isn't streaming as it hits theaters this weekend, but here's when and where to expect it.

Paramount hasn't yet confirmed a streaming release date for the Sonic sequel. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is hitting theaters Friday. But the COVID-19 pandemic, with its profound disruptions to new movies, has triggered confusion about streaming movies the same day they're released in cinemas. Paramount Plus offers a seven-day free trial standard for all new members.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2's post-credit scene cameo, explained (Polygon)

Wondering who the character is in the post-credits scene of Sonic 2, or who's going to replace Dr. Robotnik if Jim Carrey does retire from acting?

In a recent interview, Sonic 2 director Jeff Fowler told Polygon about the planned dynamic for Sonic and Shadow in the third film. In Sonic 2, Sonic uses the power of the Master Emerald to smash a giant evil mech to pieces, and we see Dr. Robotnik fall and disappear into the rubble at the end. He’s since become a staple of the series, and he’s a playable character in Sonic spin-offs like Sonic Riders. In 2005, he got his own game, Shadow the Hedgehog, in which he uncovers the origins of his being. Then the camera flashes to a high-tech, windowless lab and a cinematic tease of Shadow the Hedgehog. We don’t get a particularly long look, but it’s enough to show us what he’ll look like in Sonic 3. He’s the series’ “anti-Sonic,” created by Gerald Robotnik (Dr. Eggman’s grandfather) as part of the ambitious world-improving Project Shadow. Shadow first appears in 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 game, which was initially released on the Sega Dreamcast, and then re-released on the Nintendo GameCube as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is in theaters, and the blue hedgehog has officially been reunited with his fox pal Tails and the burly red echidna Knuckles on the big screen.

'Sonic the Hedgehog 2' Review: Running Through the Game's Lore ... (Collider.com)

Like the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is about the blue blur trying to find his own family, and this attempt to tell a story about making one’s own family is hitting many of the same notes as the original film. Yet with all the core pieces of the Sonic universe now on the table, it will be interesting to see if the eventual Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film will meld these two ideas more effectively. At one point, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik are traipsing around a temple full of booby-traps, and it truly feels like the games come to life. Meanwhile, Dr. Robotnik has escaped the mushroom planet he was marooned on at the end of the first film, thanks to the help of the red echidna warrior Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba). While Robotnik heads after Sonic with this new sidekick, Sonic gets his own in the form of Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey), a two-tailed fox who has a bit of a Sonic obsession. But after the setup of the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues this idea by bringing in more characters and more references from the games, fully embracing the wild amount of lore from a series that was originally about a blue mammal running really fast. But 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog seemed to find a way around this, by taking the primary components of the game—the hero Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and the villain Dr. Robotnik ( Jim Carrey)—and bringing them to the real world.

'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' Races To $6.2M In Previews; 'Ambulance ... (Deadline)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looking at $50M+ opening whereas Ambulance will die at the weekend box office.

Among regular movies in release, Sony’s Morbius did $1.3M yesterday ending its week with an estimated $46.9M. The movie is expected to decline 65% in weekend 2 given its genre nature. Meanwhile, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once is the little engine that could. Updated: Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 grossed $6.25M in previews from Wednesday fan screenings and Thursday showtimes that started at 3 PM. The film is expected to make north of $50M this weekend. The logical question is why wasn’t this sent to Peacock, day-and-date. In regards to Ambulance, the good news is that it’s double the preview number of Universal’s previous action dud The 355 which did $350K at 2,300 theaters that began at 7PM on its Thursday. The irony here with Ambulance is that it’s director Michael Bay’s best reviewed movie of his career, tied with The Rock which also was 68% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and the movie isn’t going to make it to double digits in its opening. After the pic’s disastrous $20M foreign box office result in 59 territories, Uni is already dealing with the reality that this vehicle is broken.

All eyes are on 'Sonic 2' as movie theater owners hope families will ... (CNBC)

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" is the first major family film released in 2022 and is expected to signal if this demographic is finally ready to return to theaters.

Marketing is a good indicator of whether a movie is considered to be in the family genre, Dergarabedian said. "Jungle Cruise," on the other hand, was marketed as a family-friendly adventure film based on one of Disney's most iconic theme park rides. Because of lackluster attendance during the pandemic, studios have punted family-friendly titles further down the calendar. "Sonic 2," which stars Jim Carrey and the voice of Idris Elba, will be a key comparison for family films in 2022. These movies are targeted at younger generations and generally have a "G" or "PG" rating. At the time, Covid-19 had started to spread, but it had yet to be designated as a pandemic.

Before “Sonic,” the biggest opening weekend for a PG-rated film since the pandemic took hold was “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” from Warner Bros., which generated $31.1 million last July, according to Comscore data. It’s now the top-grossing film based on a video-game franchise domestically, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com About 85% of kids in the U.S. watched full-length movies on their mobile devices last year, compared with 60% of adults. The PG-rated picture is projected to generate $65 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales this weekend, according to Boxoffice Pro. Paramount is forecasting over $50 million. The film, about a superfast blue mammal, has a number of things going for it. Its predecessor was one of the last big hits before the pandemic struck.

And I loved that they loved it. In the Spring of 2020, the running joke was that the film was going to win an Oscar for Best Picture because it was arguably the best movie that had come out by the time theaters were forced to close in March. Alas, the Academy would not have that, and eligibility rules were changed. And streaming. You might be asking: Is this think piece about the perseverance and importance of movie theaters during the pandemic actually pegged to Sonic 2, a film, based on a video game, about a blue hedgehog that…makes fart jokes? It was the last movie that we saw together in the theater–on Valentine’s Day weekend 2020–before the world went sideways. Number of Sonic the Hedgehog movies?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Post Credits Scene and Ending Explained ... (IGN)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has arrived. But does it have a post credits scene? And what exactly does that big finale mean for Sonic 3? Check out our Sonic 2 ...

And for more on the film, check out how to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 2, read our Sonic the Hedgehog 2 review, watch our video on why video game movies usually can't get boss fights right, or dig in on the biggest Sonic 2 Easter eggs. In Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman revives Shadow and uses him to enact his nefarious plans of world domination and get revenge on Sonic, of course. The same chaos emeralds Sonic and friends are now in charge of. But what did you think of Sonic the Hedgehog 2? It’s Sonic’s moment to go Super Sonic. Reaching his super state, which is a huge fixture of the games, Sonic flies up and slices the top of the giant robot’s head open, leaving only Robotnik in the middle sheepishly asking for a truce to their fight. This ending provides nice closure on the story arc about Sonic feeling all alone in the world. Nevermind. Look, he’s the same Sonic. Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic form a new tribe to protect the Earth and keep the Master Emerald out of evil hands, which by the way Knuckles was able to restore to its original form. As mentioned earlier, Shadow the Hedgehog was created by Robotnik’s grandfather in an attempt to make a being that could handle those dang chaos emeralds. Later, Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Tom, and Maddie play baseball together at the field where Sonic was feeling so lonely in the first Sonic movie (awwww), and then they all go out for ice cream where Knuckles inquires about grape ice cream. Shadow is depicted as having amnesia in his game, but in other entries is shown as more dark to Sonic’s light, a sometimes-rival to the Blue Blur with an anti-hero vibe. As we all know, his thoughts are terrifying and egotistical, so the fate of Earth and probably beyond is now on the line. Read on for all the details on that and more!
