In seven of his 12 starts with Toronto last year, Berrios allowed three or more runs. The pregame narrative: Strangely enough, the Blue Jays have lost 10 consecutive home openers. Toronto was 86-76 on the run line last year, which was sixth in the majors. Toronto covered the run line mark with ease in all three games hosting Texas last season. Blue Jays picks Toronto hosts the Texas Rangers at the Rogers Centre to kick off its most anticipated season in decades.

Blue Jays betting guide: Will home opener skid continue vs. Rangers? (Sportsnet.ca)

The Toronto Blue Jays begin their highly anticipated 2022 season with the opener of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers at home on Friday night.

The Rangers, meanwhile, were 78-74-10 (51.3 per cent) to the over and a healthy 43-35-3 (55.1 per cent) to the over as the road team. Texas was also a mediocre 74-88-0 (45.7 per cent) overall against the run line and 38-43-0 (46.9 per cent) as the road team last season. Yup, it was Semien. The former Blue Jay is 2-8 with a homer and 2 RBIs in 11 plate appearances against Berríos in his career. The Jays were also a rock solid 63-46 (57.7 per cent) as the favourite in 2021 and finished off the season by going 11-4 in their last 15 games as a home favourite. Toronto ended up 86-76-0 (53.1 per cent) against the run line, which ranked sixth in baseball and finished 42-39-0 (51.9 per cent) against the run line as the home team in 2021. His most recent outing against Texas was on June 18th of last season with the Twins where Berríos went 6.0 innings and gave up three earned runs on three hits. Take a guess on who led Major League Baseball in total bases in 2021 with 363? Toronto was a robust 84-69-9 (54.9 per cent) to the under in 2021 which was fourth best in baseball. My pick: I really want to take the Blue Jays here, but there is something about the Jays laying an egg on Opening Day lately. The Rangers were also a terrible 50-86 (36.7 per cent) as an underdog overall and an even worse 15-42 (26.3 per cent) in their last 57 games as a road doggie to wrap up 2021. Hopefully this piece will help you make an informed decision if you decide to put a little sprinkle down on the game. The Blue Jays have owned the Rangers in Toronto recently by going a scorching 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

Blue Jays' Berrios pulled after recording 1 out vs. Rangers (thescore.com)

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios was removed from Friday's game against the Texas Rangers after recording just one out in the first inning.

Berrios inked a seven-year, $131-million contract extension in November. The 27-year-old posted a 3.58 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 12 starts for the Blue Jays last season. Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios was removed from Friday's game against the Texas Rangers after recording just one out in the first inning. Berrios allowed a leadoff home run to Brad Miller and hits to Corey Seager and Nathaniel Lowe before Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo pulled him after 34 pitches.

Kenny Ducey previews Friday's MLB game between the Rangers and Blue Jays, including betting odds and a prediction.

No longer calling Coors Field his home will help, but facing a championship-caliber offense will not. The flamethrower is now 27 years old, and is unlikely to drastically improve at this age. At any rate, it’s really easy to see why this team is a World Series favorite. Best known for his volatility, the former Rockies righty actually pitched pretty well last season despite a 4.59 ERA, posting a 3.95 expected ERA and a solid 24.4% strikeout rate. Then there’s Adolis Garcia, who did well enough in the first half of last year to make the All-Star team. They spent money like it was going out of style this offseason, paying Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Gray among others.

In a matchup between two teams that are loaded with talent galore, the improved Texas Rangers will begin their 2022 season by traveling north to take on the ...

Berrios should have the edge against Gray, as the latter could end up being in for a long day against a supreme Blue Jays lineup that has the potential to be one of the best in the bigs. The Blue Jays concluded the 2021 season by going 4-1 at home, including compiling a record of 47-33 in 80 games. Texas could cover the spread in their season opener simply based on their roster overhaul and the amount of star power that now exists in that dugout. Many believe that Coors Field was to blame for Gray’s struggles, but he actually has fared worse out on the road in his career with a 4.65 ERA compared to that of his 4.54 ERA at home. Getting the opening day nod on the bump will be former Twins All-Star Jose Berrios, who played his first season in a Blue Jays uniform in 2021 with a 5-4 record and a 3.58 ERA. However, Texas made strides to improve their competitive positioning compared to the rest of baseball, including stealing skilled middle infielder Marcus Semien from the Blue Jays and signing him to a massive seven-year, $175 million dollar deal.

This is a very talented baseball team that will be looking to make waves this season after missing the playoffs a season ago. Toronto won 58% of its games (47-34) at home a season ago despite not being able to play at the Rogers Centre until July. Don’t let the fact that they missed the playoffs fool you: On top of being young, exciting, and talented, the Toronto Blue Jays were a good baseball team in 2021. Semien, Corey Seager, and Mitch Garver are the most notable acquisitions and are expected to bring life to this dormant lineup. They did lose shortstop Marcus Semien and his 45 homers from a year ago to the Rangers, so there will be a familiar face in the opposing dugout. I expect Texas’ bats to be improved but still project it as a bottom-third offense. Berrios has been a cool cucumber during his time in the major leagues, never once letting his ERA balloon above 4.00 for a season. Jose Berrios (12-9, 3.52 ERA): After five-and-a-half years with the Minnesota Twins, Berrios was traded to the Blue Jays a season ago. The ace has been a reliable presence on the mound since entering the league, as his ERA hasn’t been above 4.00 since his rookie season in 2016. The slugger accumulated a gaudy stat line of .311 BA, 48 HR, and 111 RBI despite playing the season at the young age of 22. Last year he had 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings while having an issue with walks (3.5 BB/9). Texas has made several offseason moves — including poaching former Jays star Marcus Semien — that it hopes will pay immediate dividends.

Blue Jays embarrass the Rangers in a fun game + key players and ... (Blue Jays Nation)

God the Texas Rangers are just crap, eh? Let's dunk on them. It didn't start well, Jose Berrios only got one out while allowing four earned runs.

His double, which had a career high exit velocity of 106.9mph gave the Jays a 8-7 lead. Orelvis Martinez hit his first career home run in Double A as the Fisher Cats lost 11-6. In the bottom of the sixth, Jansen walked, Santiago Espinal hit a double which scored him, 8-7 game. If we can get “end of the season” Danny Jansen all season, expect a 25 homer season from the primary catcher. Espinal took over after Jon Gray was removed from the game. Stripling shutdown the Rangers in the top of the fifth, which set up the perfect script for the movie. Well, the Rangers absolutely suck. Danny Jansen recorded the first hit of the Blue Jays season, but that was quickly erased after a Cavan Biggio double play ball. Then came Teoscar Hernandez to the plate and absolutely smashed the ball. Then Kirk hit what looked to be a dinger, but it was a deep fly out to score Vlad. They added another run off Trent Thornton, who to his credit, righted the ship with his two innings pitched. On the second time around, Jon Gray issued a walk to Springer, a single to Bichette, a single to Vlad which scored Bo, a walk to Teoscar to load the base.

Blue Jays come back from 7 down to win 1st home opener since ... (CBC.ca)

Teoscar Hernandez had a three-run blast and scored the game-winning run as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied for a raucous 10-8 win over the Texas Rangers on ...

Guerrero singled home George Springer in the fourth and advanced Bichette to second. Hernandez was called out at home plate by umpire Bill Welke when Gurriel doubled to deep left and advanced to third on Miller's throw. By the middle of the fourth inning Texas had built a 7-0 lead. Springer drew a two-out walk before Bichette and Guerrero had back-to-back singles to score again. He couldn't get his first out until he was six batters into the Rangers' lineup and Toronto was trailing 3-0. Guerrero, Hernandez, and Marcus Semien — who signed with Texas in the off-season after playing for the Blue Jays last year — formally received their Silver Slugger awards. Dennis Santana, one of four Texas relievers, took the loss. Brad Miller and Adolis Garcia added solo blasts for the visitors. Jose Berrios gave up four runs in just a third of an inning as Toronto's Opening Day starter escaped with a no decision. "I think there's not a single player in this clubhouse that is going to forget today, what happened today." "When it came to game I was trying to be too perfect, I think like too nasty and I didn't throw the ball over the plate," he said. "We always knew it was going to be like that from the beginning," said Hernandez. "We're just excited to be back and enjoy every single moment with the fans."

And that bullpen makes it hard to trust the Rangers against this explosive Blue Jays offense, especially with Dunning starting this game. So, while Toronto should make things really rough on him in this game, it wouldn’t be too shocking if the righty could find a way to hold the Jays to four or five run. Last year, Dunning was 5-3 with a 3.09 ERA when pitching in Arlington, but he was a miserable 0-7 with a 6.39 ERA on the road. This Blue Jays lineup doesn’t boast many lefties at the plate, but third baseman Cavan Biggio fits the bill. And this matchup is definitely a good one for him. Gausman has been a fast starter in recent years, and he was also sharp in Spring Training. The Toronto Blue Jays erased a 7-0 deficit to earn a 10-8 win over the Texas Rangers in their season opener. It was a really bad early sign for a Texas bullpen that was already a question mark heading into the season. The Rangers are 15-42 in their last 57 games as road underdogs. Rangers Blow 7-Run Lead, Drop Season Opener to Blue Jays (Sports Illustrated)

The Texas Rangers' revamped lineup lived up to expectations, but the pitching staff surrendered a seven-run lead as the club dropped its season opener in ...

On two different occasions—one by John King, one by Santana—the Rangers walked a Blue Jay hitter with two outs and nobody on base. The Rangers and Blue Jays continue their three-game series at Rogers Centre on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers bullpen couldn't stop the bleeding as Toronto put up runs in five straight innings. They erred on the side of caution and didn't force the issue. Rangers starter Jon Gray faced the minimum his first time through the dangerous Blue jays lineup. Texas got off to a near-perfect start.
