This is an important game for both the Oilers and the Kings who are still neck and neck in their division. The Kings are rested well for this matchup and have been involved in close games a number of times in their recent games. Even more telling in this matchup is the Kings outshooting the Oilers in all three games between them. The Kings are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames at home last Monday, which, as mentioned earlier, helped open the door for Edmonton to take the No. 2 spot in the Pacific Division. Nevertheless, the Kings are within striking distance of supplanting the Oilers and probably just need a bit more luck to get a win later tonight. The Oilers are now eyeing to catch the Calgary Flames for the lead in the division, but they can’t look too far ahead as they have Los Angeles on their plate later tonight. A win by the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday and a Los Angeles Kings loss a day prior have Connor McDavid’s team supplanting the Kings for the second spot in the Pacific Division. The Oilers now have 87 points, while the Kings are stuck with 86.

Edmonton still did walk out of that game with the 2 points though after winning the game in a shootout. Home ice advantage in the playoffs would be a nice bonus for either of these teams, but more important than that is just getting to the playoffs. Unless either of these teams completely fall apart, this game will be a likely the first playoff round series for both teams. On the flip side of that, if Edmonton can win they will be 3 points up with a game in hand. That makes them 5 behind Edmonton. If the Edmonton Oilers get 2 points tonight that would make them 7 points ahead with both teams having 10 games left. The Edmonton Oilers are in Los Angeles to take on the Kings tonight.
In the past 17 seasons, Oilers fans haven't had many years where they were anxiously anticipating a key matchup in the final weeks of the regular season.
Last week the Oilers were a two points behind the Kings before the game and finished the evening one point back with a game in hand. — Remove the Calgary 9-5 debacle and Mikko Koskinenhas a .915Sv% and 2.66 GAA in his other 12 starts. the Sharks. He made some key stops in the final two minutes and then one in OT, before he made his great pass to send McDavid in all alone. The raw emotion is much different than games in November and December. Give the Sharks credit — they didn’t give the Oilers very much at 5×5 or on the PP. But the Oilers scored shorthanded and on 3×3. The importance and excitement of these games shouldn’t be understated. That was a big goal for him and the team, and they really wanted the two points. — On March 1st, 2009, the Columbus Blue Jackets were in seventh spot in the West with 68 points, the Oilers and Ducks were tied for eighth with 67 points, Nashville had 66 points and Minnesota had 65. It’s a credit to his god-given ability, his level of concentration and his ability to execute, that’s what it’s a credit to what I focus on as a coach, and what I get to see, is a lot of the really good defensive plays that he’s making. When your captain does that, when the leading scorer in the national hockey league commits to playing like that, I think it really resonates with the rest of the group and becomes a contagious type attitude.” He’s someone I take a lot of pride in having worked with and having him come through the program so to speak, he’s someone who does a lot of really good things on the ice, so I’m happy he got that goal tonight.” Our focus is not on home-ice advantage, it’s not what other teams in the western conference did, it’s on the day’s business and I’m confident if we put the necessary work in and we have the right focus, results and home-ice advantage. I think as a group, we’ve been buying in and doing the small details that make us successful.” On if he was called for the puck: “Oh, I was callin’ for it! On the Oilers winning in different ways: “I think it’s good going into the playoffs. Good teams find ways to win, and I thought we really competed in the third.
