The 2022 Masters officially started Thursday morning, but not before the ceremonial opening tee shots were struck.

Jock Hutchison and Fred McLeod hit the first ceremonial opening tee shots, and other legends of the game such as Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Ken Venturi, Arnold Palmer and Lee Elder have taken part since. But before the action started, there was one last tradition to observe — the ceremonial opening tee shots. The two-time winner at Augusta relished his first chance on Thursday to tee it up alongside fellow legends he lovingly called 'two old goats.'

Updates on Tiger Woods from Thursday at the Masters (pgatour.com)

Thursday morning at the 86th Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods makes his TOUR comeback from severe leg injuries suffered in a single-car accident in February ...

Hole 1 (par 4, 445 yards): Woods took driver off the tee, but he didn't catch all of it; the ball traveled 264 yards, settling just short of the right fairway bunker. The 82-time TOUR winner played a safe pitch to 15 feet right of the hole, and he proceeded to two-putt for par, his birdie try just burning the edge. Hole 4 (par 3, 240 yards): For the third consecutive full-swing approach, Woods played short of the hole. The crowd gasped, and Woods tapped in for his fifth consecutive par to begin his competitive return. Hole 5 (par 4, 495 yards): Another buttery fade off the tee, safely finding the right side of the fairway, with 216 yards uphill into the green on one of Augusta National's traditionally most difficult holes. The par putt slid right of the hole, and Woods tapped in for his first bogey of the tournament. Hole 6 (par 3, 180 yards): With a bullet cut 6-iron, Woods sent a jolt of energy through the Georgia pines, the ball tracking toward the cup the entire way. He saved par to remain in red numbers on the day. Perhaps a sign of working through competitive rust, Woods caught his pitch shot heavy and the ball failed to reach the green, settling 15 yards short of the hole. The ball traveled 315 yards, leaving 112 yards to the hole, with branches squarely in his line. Hole 10 (par 4, 495 yards): Woods began the second nine with a 302-yard bullet down the middle, drawing roars of appreciation from the patrons at the turn. He took a bold line on his second shot over Rae's Creek and it paid dividends, the approach landing soft on the left side of the green, inside 25 feet for eagle.

Masters normality makes welcome return to a rejigged Augusta (The Guardian)

The 11th and 15th have been changed to offer balance between risk and reward but the 13th remains toothless.

“I hope that he would feel that we continue to carry the tradition and values we thought were so important in the game.” The club have always caught between the old and the new, the desire to do right by the traditions, and to keep improving, too. “So that probably has been a counter to doing anything.” The club’s co-founder Bobby Jones loved that hole, which he said offers players “a tempting and dangerous” decision about whether to bend the tee-shot around the corner so they can reach the green in two. The players hit it so long off the tee they are left with a short iron into the green. They often tinker with the course, but these changes are a little more drastic than usual, the idea, as always, is to make sure it is still a course that offers the right balance between risk and reward.

2022 Masters predictions, favorites: Ranking the entire field from 1 ... (CBSSports.com)

Augusta National has reached a fever pitch ahead of the 2022 Masters as anticipation has grown throughout the world for the year's first major tournament.

77. Guido Migliozzi (first appearance): After grinning his way to a T4 at the U.S. Open at Torrey last year, he's made just one cut in 2022, and it was a T67 at the Ras al Khaimah Championship. He's somehow lost strokes in every statistical category in every tournament except for the three events in which he narrowly gained strokes off the tee. 74. Takumi Kanaya (T58 in 2019): Kanaya is coming off a good showing at the match play in Austin, but broadly speaking, he's not a great iron player, which seems problematic in a week like this one. 67. Charl Schwartzel (Won in 2011): Schwartzel has had a completely bizarre record at Augusta since winning maybe the wildest Masters of all time in 2011. He's been playing solid golf of late, and he gets the lefty advantage at Augusta. I'm in on him to finish in the top 25 or so. 46. Bubba Watson (Won in 2012, 2014): This tournament marks the 10-year anniversary of his famous hooking shot out of the woods on the 10th hole. 45. Kevin Kisner (T21 in 2019): He's been playing such tremendous golf, but this is not a course that necessarily sets up that well for him, and his history here (two straight missed cuts and no top-20 finishes) shows it. 22. Marc Leishman (T4 in 2013): I imagine he's been running Leishman National pretty fast on the stimpmeter for a few weeks now to help him prepare for this year's event. 11. Viktor Hovland (T21 in 2021): He would be in the top five if his short game was in order. 10. Jordan Spieth (Won in 2015): In the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2021 Masters, Spieth beat or tied 447 of 453 competitors (98.7%). He somehow has one green jacket. 6. Scottie Scheffler (T18 in 2021): It feels foolish to have the No. 1 player in the world this low, but Scheffler is not your normal No. 1 player in the world. 8. Dustin Johnson (Won in 2020): Over his last 50 rounds following the WGC-Dell Match Play, D.J.'s strokes gained tee to green numbers were below Adam Hadwin, C.T. Pan and Martin Laird. He played well at Austin Country Club, but a lot of that was due to a putter that's been smoking for a while now. Dumping his tee shot into the water on No. 16 last year as soon as he got within striking distance of Hideki Matsuyama was not encouraging, but it also seems statistically impossible to get into contention as much as he has (eight top-seven finishes in 18 majors) and not eventually win one.

Augusta will mark the first in a storybook summer for the 19-year-old, who will also be the first from his country ever to tee it up at the Open Championship at St. Andrews in July. This year will mark his second Masters start — he finished T36 in 2017, becoming the first Mid-Am entrant to make the cut at Augusta National. Jarvis, who plays collegiately for UNLV, won the Latin American Amateur Championship to earn an invite into the field at Augusta National. In doing so, he’ll be the first player from the Cayman Islands to tee it up in the event. Nakajima is something of a superstar in his native Japan, seen by many as the natural successor to Hideki Matsuyama atop the country’s golf mantel. This, of course, is thanks to its founder, Bobby Jones. Jones is the most famous amateur in golf history, a player who won seven majors without ever turning “pro.” Rather, Jones moonlighted in professional golf from his day job as an attorney. The club also hosts an annual amateur dinner on the night before the Masters begins, an idea that came at the suggestion of Jones himself.

10 fascinating Masters Tournament records you should know (Golf.com)

Anthony Kim hits his tee shot on the 17th hole during the second round of the 2009 Masters. Getty Images. If the Masters is about anything, it's about history.

Nicklaus played the final round of the Masters 37 times. It was in the final round, with a 3-iron from 222 yards. Yet still it seems we are drawn to records at the Masters more than any other tournament in golf. The next closest competitors in this category are Raymond Floyd, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Angel Cabrera and Mickelson, all stuck at three, so Tiger’s probably holding onto this one for a while. Phil Mickelson is the next closest at 18, yet still several good Masters finishes away from matching. Playing the same course makes it feel as though, once a year, time stands still and we can watch the current greats compete against the scores of past champions (as well as that year’s field).

Tiger's back: After first-round 71, Woods thrills patrons with Masters ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Tiger Woods' first-round score of 1-under 71 put him within shouting distance of the lead after the first round of the Masters on Thursday.

Woods' career was in jeopardy after the car wreck left him confined to a hospital bed for three months. "A loss of concentration there," he moaned. A sloppy bogey at the par-5 eighth brought some groans, but Woods' brilliant short game kept him from posting one of those big numbers that can spell doom at Augusta. "Once the adrenaline kicks in and I get into my own little world, I knew I should be able to handle business." "You just can't not watch him," said Australia's Cameron Smith, among those tied for the lead after shooting a 68. Yep, there's still a long way to go. His lone tournament in the 508 days since he last competed was a just-for-fun event in December in which he rode in a cart and was paired with his 13-year-old son, Charlie. Woods was out of the public eye until last November, when he posted a video of him swinging a club with a simple message, "Making progress." Woods failed to make solid contact with his first shot: a 264-yard drive that faded behind a bunker on the right side of the fairway. His approach rolled off the front of the green, but he sank a 10-foot putt to save par, bringing another huge roar from the patrons. The ball climbed up a ridge on the green and stopped 2 feet short of the flag, leaving Woods with a gimme that put him in red numbers for the first time. He was just three strokes off the lead — with roughly half the field still on the course — after making three birdies, a pair of bogeys and a whole lot of solid pars — many of them salvaged by his deft touch around the greens.
