Kinder chocolates recalled due to possible salmonella contamination (Globalnews.ca)

A recall on certain Kinder chocolate items linked to an outbreak of salmonella in Europe and the U.K. has been expanded to Canada.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said Wednesday the chocolate products were identified “as the likely route of infection” in an outbreak involving 134 children mainly under 10 years of age, several of whom have been hospitalized. A recall of certain Kinder brand chocolate products linked to an outbreak of salmonella in Europe and the U.K. has been expanded to Canada. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

“Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Call your doctor if you become sick from consuming a recalled product.

The past week has seen outbreaks of E.coli, salmonella and listeriosis from supermarket food products.

The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the outbreak after dozens of cases of people falling ill were linked to the pizzas. Twenty-one cases of the same strain have been reported in France, eight of whom were hospitalised. The Graindorge cheese recall procedure is due to end on April 19. The recall concerns its Fraich'Up frozen pizzas. At least 63 cases have been reported so far. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland also recalled the products, stating there have been 10 cases in the country with the same strain of Salmonella as found in the UK.
